In which Elia Lavellan spends a peaceful evening watching Solas paint… among other things.

Torchlight flickers across the crow’s feet at the corners of his narrowed eyes. He carefully stirs a bowl of pigment and water, then tips his chin up critically as he inspects the wet plaster on the wall.

Solas’s face has been creased in a perpetual frown for most of the day, ever since they set foot in Din’An Hanin. Elia isn’t certain what exactly is bothering him. She supposes he could still be thinking about the documents they found in the old elven temple; she’s certainly still feeling raw from the discovery that a misunderstanding involving an ill-fated pair of lovers was the final trigger for the Exalted March against the Dales. But Solas had seemed particularly disapproving when Blackwall suggested that the discovery must mean a lot to him, and Elia isn’t sure why the suggestion was so displeasing. She knows he doesn’t like being lumped together with the Dalish, but this new piece of history is undeniably shocking for humans and elves alike.

He’d been taciturn during their whole journey back to Skyhold. Upon their arrival at the castle late that evening, he’d turned to her with that handsome but unnerving frown.

“I’d like to work on the fresco,” he said. “I won’t be joining you tonight.”

Elia immediately shook her head. “I’ll join you, then. I’ll watch you paint, if that’s alright with you.” Usually she allowed him to keep his mysteries; he shared more glimpses into his life with every night they spend together, gradually unpeeling the pieces of his heart and offering them to her like segments of an orange, but a core of solitude lived in the centre of her lover’s chest, and Elia didn’t think he should be alone tonight.

To her relief, his face immediately cleared, his eyebrows tilting with a hint of gratitude. “It will take all night,” he warned.

“I know,” she replied gently. “I’ll stay with you.”

It was the right thing to say: he smiled for what felt like the first time that day. “Come by in a few hours. The plaster will be ready to paint by then,” he said. He gently stroked her jaw with his thumb, then kissed her forehead. “Rest in the meantime, Inquisitor,” he murmured. “It will be a long night.”

This is one of my favorite theories behind atla and I wanted to share my own breakdown of it. 

SO the raids on the SWT began in 40 AG. They continued until each and every waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe had been captured. (Note: captured) 

Worth noting is that Hama refers to herself as the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe. 

Here’s where the conspiracy gets juicy. Hama was the only one who managed to escape. She created bloodbending to get out of the prison. And she says herself that she’s the only one who escaped. This could be for one of two reasons: 

All of the other prisoners had already succumb to the conditions or been killed 

The remaining waterbender prisoners were murdered after Hama’s escape

The second option is more plausible. Hama displayed a dangerous, powerful, unknown form of waterbending and overtook a Fire Nation guard’s body. She had him unlock her cell and fled. If there were remaining waterbenders in the prison they would have been killed out of fear once Hama escaped. 

They Fire Nation couldn’t risk anyone else in their prison possessing this power. So they were all murdered because of Hama’s escape. 

Look at Hama’s reaction to hearing that the raids continued. A kind of casual “oh, you poor things.” Hama knew that the raids continued because she escaped. All of the waterbenders had already been caught! The only waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe that was known at that time to be free or alive was Hama. 

And she knew better than to return to her home, where they were sure to come looking for her. She stayed and hid right under their noses because she knew they were going to tear the world apart trying to track her down. She was too dangerous. 

When Yon Rha comes to the Southern Water Tribe in 94 AG Katara is still a child. Their tribe has been in shambles for years at this point. Katara is the tribe’s last hope and they’re a tiny tribe at that point in time. Do you honestly think that word of a child waterbender would have made way to the Fire Nation? 

Do you think that the Water Tribe would ever release that information willingly? I don’t. I think that the Southern Raiders had no idea that another waterbender had been born into the Southern Water Tribe. 

Why else would Yon Rha have accepted that an adult was the waterbender he was looking for? The intel didn’t say that a new waterbender was born, the intel said that there’s one waterbender left. The Fire Nation already knows about the last waterbender of the SWT. She escaped. And they’re still trying to find her. 

The Fire Nation is adamant about finding the last waterbender because they’re looking for Hama. Hama, who can control people’s bodies. Hama, who managed to escape a high-security Fire Nation prison without any water. Hama, the only waterbender to best the Fire Nation. And the only one left. 

Kya offers herself up as prisoner to Yon Rha. Because she knows that the past raids meant that the Southern Raiders took the waterbenders prisoner. But that has changed. 

Why would their procedure have changed? Why did they stop taking waterbenders as prisoners? Because of Hama. They stopped taking waterbenders prisoner after Hama’s escape.

The Mighty Nein reached 100 episodes!

First is Fjord. On the left, he wears fingerless gloves with his fingers facing forward and holds the Sword of Fathoms, a barnacle covered dark grey falchion with a yellow cat-like eye in the hilt. On the right, he grips the Star Razor, a bright silver longsword that has been repaired so that blue material marbles through it like water. The back of his hand is towards the viewer. 

Next is Caleb. On the left, he reaches forward with an open hand covered in flame. The edge of his cloak and a bandage is seen at his wrist. On the right, he reaches back with his index finger and thumb forward, a bright white point of light with a faint dodecahedron around it in between them. The edge of his more fitted new outfit is visible at his wrist.

Next is Beau. On the left, she punches forward with a closed fist. A blue wrap goes up to her wrist and she is wearing a green jade bracelet. On the right, she holds an open hand back as if she’s telling someone to stop. She is wearing dark blue fingerless gloves with a lighter blue patterned sleeve that reaches the first knuckle of her middle finger in a point that radiates light blue gemstones.

Next is Jester. On the left, she holds a pen with a bright pink and purple lollipop on the end. The grip is wrapped in green ribbon, and there is a bright green ribbon in a bow around her wrist. On the right, she holds a blueberry cupcake in a turned-up palm as if she is offering it to someone. Her green sleeve is visible.

Next is Yasha. On the left, she holds out a small handful of three flowers that are different shades of pink. There is a black leather chord braided around her wrist and her nails are a dark grey. On the right, she desperately reaches back with a manacle around her wrist as the chain connected to it breaks. There is black marbling the skin on the back of her hand and up her arm.

Next is Veth. On the left, her hand as Nott reaches forward in a “C” shape with a button balanced between her thumb and index finger. Her skin is green, her fingernails are pointed, and white bandages wrap down her arm and hand. On the right, her hand as Veth reaches back in the same shape, with a golden wedding ring in place of the button. Her skin is now dark brown and her fingernails are shorter. She wears a yellow mesh puffed sleeve.

Next is Caduceus. On the left, his furred hand cups a green teacup sitting in his palm. The teacup has a dark blue peacock intricately painted on it. On the right he reaches back with a piece of purple spiked residuum between his thumb and middle finger, his armor visible at his wrist.
