There was a lot of fighting and such over borders for countries. It was about three hundred years after Mira created Elaris, and everyone wanted to be in control.

The four magicians lived in a small village with their parents, and the fighting was threatening their way of life.

Regus basically saw them, and that they didn't want power, they only wanted to protect people, he granted them some of his magic.

He does keep an eye on Adrika.

(In fact, all the gods do. She's holding the most powerful magic and she doesn't even know)

Most Elementals worship their corresponding god, but like I said, it depends on the person.

The gods don't require people to worship them, it just might get you some help in a situation one day.

Really the only thing that identifies him are his eyes, which are brown around his pupils and green around the edges.

Jurrik is a Water Elemental.

He has a few markings on his wrists,

(obviously after his hand gets cut off you can't see those) and a blue tint to his hair.

Adrika has the most markings out of all of them, which may be due to the fact that she's a Cosmic Elemental.

Her eyes tend to change from pink, purple, and blue, and her hair does the same. (I think of it like holographic fabric, how it changes color depending on how you look at it)

Most magicians do worship Regus, but that is not a requirement. (It is considered rude if you worship other gods but not him as a magician. Because he's basically their patron)

Elaris has a core-world magic,

Which means the magic itself comes from the world. There's no way to learn it, if you don't have magic in you already.

You either have it, or you don't.

So to start, the Elementals.

Elementals are usually identifiable by strange markings, oddly colored eyes, and colorful hair, all relating to their element. (some elements will be harder to identify, due to their colorings. Also note some Elementals do not get the markings or hair changes)

When you turn 15, your magic will either surface, or you are a common. (This goes for Elementals and magicians)

There's five types of elemental magic:

Fire

Fire Elementals powers are: controlling fire, summoning fire, and fire resistance.

Air

Air Elementals powers are: controlling air, summoning wind, creating tornado-type storms, and levitation.

Water

Water Elementals powers are: controlling water, summoning water, creating water based storms, and breathing under water.

Earth

Earth Elementals powers are: controlling all forms of earth (rock, dirt, etc.), summoning earth, earthquakes, and talking to animals.

And Cosmic.

Cosmic Elementals are rare. As in, "two every couple of hundred years" rare.

This is the power that Adrika has.

Because it's rare, no one can really teach her about her powers, except Mira.

(Mira teaches her later on in the story)

She has all the abilities of the other elements, but also a few added powers.

Currently her powers are: visions and dreams (often of the future), slight healing abilities, basically teleporting, and she can see peoples memories if she touches them.

And now the magicians:

There are four magician clans.

(started by the four original magicians)

And they each have a specialty in magic.

(All student magicians have classes in all clans, it's just what your specialty is is where you'll be put when you graduate)

Magic does have it's limits, and they can't do crazy things such as change time, bring people back to life, or make people fall in love.

And most illusion spells, or shifting spells, have a time limit.

(if you have a certain question about anything I can answer that)

Wolfcrest

Wolfcrest clan specializes in defensive magic.

Foxcrest

Fox crest clan specializes in illusion magic.

Hawkglove

Hawkglove clan specializes in healing magic.

Bearthorn

Bearthorn specializes in offensive magic.

So this boi is Mira

he/him, or ask (gender and sexuality is kinda an abstract concept in Elaris, and doesn't use the same labels we do, considering the gods are all kiss whoever and be whoever you want.)

He's genderfluid, but this is the form he usually takes. (that and his pegasus form)

He is God of Life and Death

He created Elaris, and everything on it.

A lot of people consider him like "head god" but he really isn't.

Regus.

he/him

His alternative form is a black bear.

He was the former God of Magic, and reclaimed his title after Hova was thrown in prison. (Hova is retitled God of Dark Magic by the magicians later)

The magicians are particular about Regus, and if you are a magician who doesn't worship him in some way the council will have questions. (unless you don't worship Amy of them)

The opposite is said for Hova, because if you worship him you're likely to get kicked out of the coven.

This lovely lady is Elben.

She/they

Goddess of Nature.

She spends most her time in the woods, and talking to animals.

Her alternative form is an enormous elk.

God of Water

Spends most of her time in the water.

Alternative form is a giant sea serpent.

Okay, so quick question what exactly is the magic system, like you've mentioned the types but not really explained them. Do all of them worship Regus? Why is Regus's alternate form a black bear? The others' alternate form relates to whatever they're the god of like farren's alternate is a giant dragon.

And yeah, this is a book (series?) I've been working on for a while now.

But the Markfellows.

They are the rulers (they use the title President but it's a monarchy) of of a small country in my world (Elaris). They also control the school where all the Elementals are taught how to control and use their powers.

Before the time of the story, Nikolas Markfellow was president. (just a heads up he is an absolute asshole)

He has three kids. Ashla, who is his oldest daughter, is not allowed to rule due to sexism.

He then pushes his wife to have more children, (which leaves her weak and very susceptible to illness and injury) and she has twin boys:

Cephas and Jurrik Markfellow.

Cephas is oldest, and therefore Nikolas's heir.

Jurrik is pretty much ignored, being the "backup" heir.

When they're both 8, Cephas and his mother get into an accident in their carriage. Their driver and personal guard were killed in the accident, and Cephas and his mother sustained injuries. His mothers were bad, and were made worse by her already declining health. And, while Cephas was able to get his mother home, she died of her wounds a few days later.

Nikolas blames Cephas for the death of his wife, and refuses to acknowledge that Cephas is even his son. He announces that Cephas died in the accident as well, and that Jurrik was now his heir. Cephas is made into a slave (at the time slavery was still legal in their country), and given a new name, "Alec".

Nikolas's wife was 90% of his impulse control, and it causes him to become a heavy alcoholic. He enjoys beating the living shit out of Cephas, physically and verbally, during his drunkenness. Jurrik was also abused, but more verbally then physically. Got to keep up appearances, after all.

Cephas spent 7 years as his father's punching bag, before both he and Jurrik turned 15 and got their elemental powers. Legally, they both had to be sent to a school to learn how to control and use their powers.

Jurrik, being the headmaster's son, was given everything he wanted, while Cephas had to work for his meals and room.

Life wasn't great for Jurrik though. He tended to stick to himself, and once everyone realized he wasn't going to get them special privileges or help them break rules, he was basically invisible.

While at the school, Cephas met Quaren.

Quaren was basically royalty in their country, and they liked Cephas. Cephas liked them too, but thought he wasn't good enough for them. After avoiding them for weeks, Quaren finally confronted him about it, and Cephas explained his station, and why, no matter how he felt about it, they could never be together. Quaren informed him that they didn't care. They dated for 4 years, (much to the annoyance of both their fathers, as Quaren's thought they could find someone from their tribe and Cephas's is just rascist) planning on getting married after they graduated from the school.

During their time of dating, Cephas gave Quaren a necklace that had been in the Markfellow family for generations.

Cephas still felt that he wasn't good enough for Quaren, and that if he could reclaim his title, he could give Quaren a better life, and a better life for their future family.

He told them his plan to challenge Jurrik for the throne, and Quaren begged him not to.

Such a duel would be to the death, and the thought of losing Cephas, or him having to kill his own brother, was painful.

Cephas promised Quaren he wouldn't go through with it, but when his father died shortly after their graduation, Cephas challenged Jurrik to a duel.

Jurrik had no choice to accept. As the newest president, and a very young one at that, he had to prove he had what it took to lead.

After a moment, Cephas was clearly winning. It was all Jurrik could do to keep the blows at bay, and he ended up under Cephas, who was ready to deliver a death blow. Quaren walked in and startled Cephas, a look of horror on their face. It gave Jurrik enough time to escape from Cephas's grip, but not enough to deflect the blow completely.

It handed on his right hand, cutting it pretty deep.

Quaren turned and ran, leaving Cephas with the choice to finish Jurrik off or chase after his lover.

He followed Quaren, and by the time he found them they were gone back to their homeland.

Jurrik escaped too, and was assumed dead.

Cephas had his title back, but in the process, had lost his family and his lover.

Unbeknownst to him, Quaren had been pregnant when they left, and had a baby girl, Adrika.

Adrika was put up for adoption, and given the Markfellow necklace as a keepsake.

Adrika is adopted by two bakers, and ends up going to the Elemental school when she turns 15

Cephas is there, but doesn't know she is his daughter, only that Hova wants her and some necklace she has.

He only finds out later, when he sees the necklace and asks Adrika where she got it.

After he finds out she's his daughter, he betrays Hova and let's her go, knowing she would die if Hova got to her.

This is Hova. (I wanted to draw him but I'm too lazy at the moment)

He's our villain.

His father was head of one of the magician clans.

The magicians and the elementals were currently at war. (The magicians and elementals have a rivalry that goes back centuries, and they've fought off and on throughout the world's history)

After a particular battle, he discovered his father and both his brothers had been killed.

Hova dabbled in experimental magic, which is something he should have known not to do. He was a powerful magician, and he thought he could handle the consequences. The other magicians warned him, but he insisted he knew what he was doing.

The clan leaders eventually decided Hova's endeavors were too dangerous to continue, and they gave him a choice: stop doing experimental magic, or leave.

He left.

He eventually discovered a spell that made him almost godlike. He would have the power to become god of magic.

with it, he would rule over the elementals and the foolish clan leaders that had sent him away from his home. He would restore peace, and ensure no more fighting would occur.

But the consequences were unforseen.

The cost of this spell meant Hova could no longer distinguish right or wrong. He became power hungry and vengeful.

Mira (god of Life and Death) confronted Hova.

Hova and Mira fought.

if Hova won, he would assume Mira's power.

Mira won, but was weakened. He couldn't kill Hova, not fully.

So he made it where Hova could only use his magic if there was exchange, and locked him in a prison, entrusting the magicians to guard the prisons.

Hova spent a few decades in this prison, slowly tying his body to his dark magic, effectively making himself immortal. he learned he could make deals with people to use his magic. He would make a deal with them, but the price was not always what they expected. And if they broke the deal, their lives belonged to him, and they had to do as he wished.

Using this, he escaped, and manipulated a cosmic elemental into a ritual to put her magic into a necklace.

With this necklace in his possession, he could finally defeat Mira.

But Mira stopped him, put him back into prison, and entrusted the necklace to the Markfellow bloodline.

Hova stayed in the prison for a few centuries, biding his time. growing in strength, he waited for the perfect moment to escape.

When he does, he discovers that no one remembers him, not even the Markfellows, aside from a "boogeyman" type legend.

He uses this anonymity to trick Cephas Markfellow into making a deal with him:

If Cephas delivers the girl who holds the necklace, Hova will have the power to erase all memory of Cephas's betrayal. Cephas can have his family and his throne, and no one would be the wiser.

Cephas doesn't know who this girl is or why Hova wants the necklace, but he has been trying to find a way to undo his mistakes for the last 16 years.

So he agrees to Hova's deal, not realizing till after the spell that his soul was bound to Hova's until the bargain was finished.

When he discovers the girl Hova wants is his daughter, Adrika, he realizes he can't hand her over. But he forgot about the terms of his deal.

This meant that when he betrayed Hova to save Adrika, his daughter, he was under Hova's control. Cephas can see what's happening, but isn't in control.

So yeah. Backstory!!!!

Hova is actually a pretty dynamic villain methinks. The whole bit about the elementals and the wizards seems interesting too! Quick question, is this part of a book or something?
