Not everyone is willing to go out of their way to discover new things. If the information isnāt presented to them, they most likely wont find out about it.Ā
Solution: Create a fun experience for users that users will talk about online and shared by people. Lazy people who wouldnāt discover this experience on their own will now be presented with the info and encouraged to participate.Ā
#2 - People prefer meaningful connections. (Quality over quantity)
With bots and inappropriate people infiltrating social media apps, people tend to stay to themself and only connect with people they know
Solution: Creating a safe space and allowing people to participate in discussions within a niche community will hopefully allow people to feel more comfortable making meaningful connections with new people.Ā
Ā #3 - Social media numbers are not liked and/or discourage users.
Having analytics shown for everyone to see can create competition with one another and creates social statuses that would discourage people from using the app.Ā
Solution: Remove them all. Having any sort of analytics will also turn peoples profiles into a business and we want people to have fun with the app. There will be numbers for certain things like how many posts someone has, how many playlists a person will like, and how many friends someone has but some of these numbers will only be shown to the owner of the profile in order for them to keep track of their activity on the app.
#4 - People like to involve their friends
When it comes to music, people tend to bond with their friends over music or find new music through them so we need a way to incorporate current friendships into the app since some people will not be using the app to make new friends.
Solution: Invite friends! By inviting friends, you can unlock a listening party feature where you can share playlists you discovered to your friends directly through the app and play them simultaneously with your friends. You can also live chat about the playlist in app. We hope that this would create a more personal experience in the app .

I use Spotify and Apple Music. They both have different features and music that I like so itās hard for me to use one over the other.Ā

I love discovering new music and I have a rather strange way of doing so.Ā When I am planning to seek out new music, I typically delete all of the music I have on my phone.Ā I then will go to the discover section of Apple Music or look through some general playlists on Spotify and listen to as much new music as I can find and download what I like on my phone.Ā I like to try different genres that I am not used to and I have found that this has expanded my taste in music a lot.Ā I sometimes go back and add some of the music I had on my phone previously, but I always make sure to delete everything before starting this discovery journey.Ā
4. Some people have friends that connect over a lot of different topics and some have friends that connect on very few topics. When it comes to music, do you find it easy or hard to connect with your friends over it, and why?Ā
I find it very easy to connect with friends over music.Ā When it comes to music, I keep a very open mind and would give just about anything a chance.Ā I love hearing about people's favorite songs and artists and I love learning why they enjoy them so much.Ā I feel like it gives me insight into who they are as a person and the things that they have dealt with in their life and I love that just simply sharing music taste can tell so much about a person.Ā Additionally, I truly enjoy sharing songs and artists with my friends for the same reason.Ā Sometimes I feel as though sharing this can make it easier to express things that aren't always easy to say out loud and it's why I love sharing and connecting with friends over music so much.

Not really and I dont really plan on it.Ā

I don't use social media a lot to begin with, as I am usually very busy with school, and in my free time I don't always want to be scrolling on social media. Ā In addition to this, I typically like to meet people naturally. Ā I am a rather shy person so I never take it upon myself to reach out to someone I do not know online, and honestly I'm not even 100% sure where to begin if I were to want to do so. Ā I personally find it easier and less intimidating to meet people in person, even though I am rather shy.
7. Do you find that like counts/follower counts/leaderboards discourage you from using certain apps and/or making connections with people online or do you feel the opposite and why?
I used to think this way when I was younger, however as I mentioned in the previous question, I don't use social media a lot anymore. Ā A few years ago I had logged out of my Instagram and could not remember my password. Ā I made a new account out of frustration and didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Ā Before I made my new account, I had a little over 1,000 followers. Ā I didn't follow as many people on my new account as I used to and only followed those I wanted to share my new account with. Ā Now I do not have nearly as many followers and don't get nearly as many likes as I used to get, but I find myself to be happier with this now that I only really share with a select amount of people. Ā Ever since then I stopped caring about how many followers and likes I got and I find that I prefer it the way it is for me now.

10! If it has to do with music discovery, Iām on board.
9. With the app idea presented in the previous question, do you have any concerns about the app or features you would implemented in the app?
I think this is a really interesting app idea. Ā I like that this app has the intention of connecting people with others who have similar interests. Ā Even though I said before that I find meeting new people in person was easier and less intimidating, it was in part due to the fact that I find the idea of just direct messaging someone out of the blue without an actual cause to be kind of scary. Ā I don't find it weird, but I am personally afraid to do it myself. Ā This app would give people from all over the world the chance to connect with each other over their shared interest of music and it is a great way to learn about other music not only in different genres, but different cultures as well which is really intriguing. Ā I would implement a feature that lets you post reviews of songs, artists, genres, etc. so people can also read what others think about it when starting their own discovery journey. Ā In addition, on people's profiles it would be interesting to see what genres they are interested in at the moment and what genres they want to know more about so people can give recommendations based on that and share similar interests if they also like what the other person likes. Ā This would also be helpful when reading reviews to see how people who like the same music as yourself feel about different music. Ā Overall I think that this is a really cool app idea that I would definitely use myself.

Yes and no. It does get intimidating since social media has become such a big part of daily life and āsocial statusā but Iām trying to train myself to think that none of that matters as much as you think it is. I find my self doing social media cleanses often and it has been helping me a lot.

I think a 7. I think thereās a lot of potential in an app like this and if it can be fun and interesting then I would most likely give it a try.

Having a section or a space for people to share or add Ā āfeelings/moodā so curated playlists for people feeling any specific way could be a really fun feature to the app instead of just generic music taste categories. These sections/playlists should be highly specific like āthey didnāt have my drink in Starbucks now I have no will to liveā or āmy boyfriend just lied to me for the third time and I need a song/playlist to motivate me to break up with himā

Music discovery can be hard and intimidating for people who just wanna find new music to listen to. Thereās a ton of people who are just casual listeners or people who are stuck in their ways and find current ways of music discovery boring. On top of that people who are interested in music may find it hard to find a community to talk about their favorite music with. With social media, there can be a lot of creeps or people with large platforms or anonymous profiles that just make it tough for people to make genuine connections over interests like music.Ā
1. Take a stab at framing this challenge as a question:Ā
How might we create a app that allows for fun and interesting music discovery as well as the ability to make genuine connections with between users on the platform?
2. Now state the key outcome youāre trying to achieve:Ā
I want to people to use this app on a daily or weekly basis and find music that they wouldnāt find through normal means of music discovery. I also want people to be able to connect with each other if they choose without fear of follower counts, spam accounts, or inappropriate people standing in their way.Ā
3. Write down important aspects of the context or constraints that you need to consider:
These could be shifts that we need to see in the ecosystem around the user, or factors that are technological, geographic or time-based.
I need to consider that music communities are really niche so this needs to be an interesting and useful enough app for people to use daily and consistently. I need to consider language because there is different types of music all over the globe in different languages. Ā

All day, everyday. Except the times that I cant obviously.

Yes. Iāve tried them all to be honest but Spotify is the only one I use currently.Ā

I do like to discover new music because I think its important, at least for me personally, to broaden your music tastes because you donāt know what you could be missing out on. I mainly look through Spotify playlists, like the ones made by Spotify that are suggested to you or I would ask my fiends if Iām ever stuck.

I enjoy a lot of different types of music so it find it easy to connect with friends through music. Theres not much that I listen to that my friends donāt.Ā

Im an artist and I follow a lot of other artists. I like to comment on their posts and chat with them if I can. As an artist, itās important for us to make connections because you never know what opportunities you cant get. Iāve been able to show my work in galleries simple because Iāve made connections with the right people on social media.

I donāt really care about likes or followers since I try to use social media to keep in touch with friends. I mainly use a private Instagram and keep a smaller circle.

A 7. I may or may not use it to make connections over music but I definitely would use it for music discovery because Spotify discovery methods can be limiting at times.

Only concern is not having repeat of the same music even in new playlists. Sometimes with Spotify you can listen to related playlists and it ends up being the same songs.
Yes I mostly use Spotify. There are times where I switch to other platforms but only to listen to specific things that arenāt on Spotify.

I do like to discover new music but iām really lazy to do it. Like I only use Spotify to listen to music and they have the ādiscover weeklyā thing but I donāt have the patience to actually listen to everything. If a friend sends me a link to a song I most likely wont listen to it. I donāt know why I do this but it just makes me anxious. If I do find new music itās usually by accident or from a movie score orIi hear it out in a store or club.

I donāt think itās hard to connect with my friends over music music because we have a similar taste in general but we branch out into specific genres. But it may become hard because I wont really go out of my way to listen to their music. So thereās that common genre and then our niche ones and I personally stick to my own music. My friends are more open to discovering differentĀ music than I am so I donāt know.Ā

Not really. I mean Iāve used it to reconnect with people from my past but never to meet new people.

Because people suck ass and social media isnāt real. If I start a new class and have new classmates and I get them on Instagram and see they have something in common through their story, then I would probably reach out to them and get to know them that way. But I wont go out of my way to follow people and get new friends. But, I have followed hot guys and would talk to them if they spoke to me first.

I donāt think it discourages me as much at this point in my life because I know that social apps arenāt an accurate depiction of real life at all. But I do think that seeing likes and follower count will create a separation of ppl on the apps because as soon as the numbers go up, they automatically think theyāre important and influential. This would turn me off from certain apps because I hate thOse kind of ppl who think their platform is the most important thing ever.

Hmm maybe a 5. Like I said iām really lazy and having to use another app just to find music is like ehhh to me. But this could help me get out of that laziness so who knows.

I think itās a really great idea for people who are open to discovering new music and bonding with people over it. I donāt think i would use it because I donāt care for either but I think it would good for other ppl. I think it would be a big thing w younger ppl cause theyāre more open to it and want to make those connections, also would be a big thing for those in music industry.
I also question how this would affect ppl who make music, like would they be able to upload music directly to this app and have ppl find the music that way? I think thats something to consider cause it will help with meeting new people and establishing a fan base thats more connected and personal.
Overall i think this is a great idea and would benefit a lot of people who love music streaming platforms and social apps.
I listen to music basically everyday. I usually listen to it on my way to and from work. My parents are also play music in out house a lot so I tend to listen to music even when I donāt want want to.Ā

Thinking back to when I was younger, I would go to youtube a lot to find new music because there werenāt many apps to help you do so besides clicking through a music streaming app. These videos were basically like a randomized playlist to a new watcher and I personally would go and save songs that I liked from these types of videos.Ā
This guy interviewed people asking then how they find new music. A lot of them look on several music streaming apps (mainly being Spotify and Youtube) and people either find random playlists or listening to things recommended to them. He also asks how people would promote their music if they were an artist.Ā
There was a website called SoulectionĀ that was mentioned by an interviewee which is one of the ways he discovers new music. So check it out if you would like
