Iâm still in shock at what just happened over the course of this last year, but I promise you this, Iâll never be able to express enough appreciation for Tyler and Josh, the whole crew, staff and audiences alike that made an unlikely dream come true.
Iâve told this story a few times so please forgive the redundancy, but I found out about @twentyonepilotsâ while I was at home, summer of last year, mixing Vitals. I went online for some mix references and noticed in my Youtube feed a recommended video which had just gone up and collected an obscene amount of views for an hour long video. It was TĂPâs live set from Bonnaroo. I had certainly heard of them but had never really taken the time to dive in. So I didâŚI remember I was hooked immediately and didnât even think about clicking away for that whole hour. I was jumping out of my skin watching this show and seeing a couple of amazing performers bring to fruition a host of musical influences that I had thought not possible up until that moment. It was derived of everything I craved and chased since Iâd started writing songs and playing in bands. So I became an instant fan.
For those of you who have followed me through thick and cringe, youâre at least vaguely familiar with some of the musical experiments Iâve been a part of over the years. Many of these werenât too dissimilar from what TĂPÂ has now masterfully engineered and delivered in the most inspiring way. And as Iâm sure with many of their fans, it somehow always feels like their triumph is your triumph. So for me, imagine that ten-fold.
Six months ago, when we just happened to be playing the same radio event as TĂP, we were fortunate enough to get to meet and share stories. Tyler and Josh couldnât have been more gracious, down to earth and at the same time straight-up inspiring figures to be aroundâŚwe immediately felt like we had met some long lost brothers. To hear them talk about music, their journey, and whatâs important to them was especially refreshing for an old boy like me whoâs been rolling around in the musical trenches for a while and starting to doubt that the good guys can actually win in this game.
After we met that night in December and parted ways, I hoped at best to maybe one day collaborate on a song or play a couple shows together. But a few months later when we got the call that we had been offered the direct support slot for the EMĂTIĂNAL RĂADSHĂW, I can tell you that I did not sleep that night. I actually couldnât believe it. It wasnât until I saw the announcement surfacing online that I allowed myself to accept it as reality. This was by far the most meaningful tour weâve ever been offered, and a chance to play for arguably the most passionate fans in music today. Not to mention this was already going to be the greatest show on earth with TĂP alone taking their headline show to the biggest crowds they had played for to-date. What an epic moment for our band to get to feel like some sort of cast member in all of this.
And the tour itself exceeded all expectations. ChefâSpecial were a brilliant addition to the show and instantly became our brothers in the art as well. The TĂP crew was one of the most finely tuned operations I have ever witnessed with an unbelievable task list to pull off for this unprecedented show from night to night. They executed it with precision and pride knowing they were just as vital to the showâs success as Tyler and Josh. Â The audiences were as exuberant and responsive as any opener can hope for. Â I canât overstate how much this experience meant to me.
Another special thanks to everyone who welcomed all of our crew and family this summer and accommodated us in a way that went beyond just being âan opener.â You made us all feel like an important part of the show (even though we all know we were as expendable on this tour as blue confetti).
One of my favorite moments from this tour will have to be the one night backstage in San Diego where we were all hanging out after the show with some of the @switchfoot guys, and Darren got this sudden idea⌠what if Tyler, Jon Foreman and myself all traded phones and played a few rounds of some kind of âvoice memo roulette.â In case youâre unaware, a songwriter/musicianâs voice memo section is the most sacred bank of song-starts you reserve for YOUR ears only and is often full of embarrassing semi-performances.  A listen back usually yields a âwtf was I thinking?â  So to hand that over to another songwriter you admire for public review is really difficult⌠EXCEPT when you get theirâs as well.  I do remember, Jon being the first one to say âIâm downâ completely without reservation. No fear and nothing to hide. What a stud. Tyler and I were probably most on edge, but we knew this would be too fun to pass up. So we swapped phones and with clinched eyes, one admired songwriter swipes through your memos and presses play. I can tell you it was the most glorious atmosphere of cringed laughter Iâve ever been a part of. Historic. One of many cherished memories from the best summer of my life. Thanks again everyone!

Iâve been playing music a long time, and this summerâs tour is easily one of the best Iâve been on. You donât get all the comforts of home when youâre on a bus for three months, but a well run tour can help your quality of life a whole lot. Our crew and management crushed it as usual, and Tyler, Josh, and the people they surround themselves with were very gracious, and treated us so cool the whole time.
This tour also had a lot of surprises for me, which is exciting to realize that there can always be more⌠For starters, record attendance numbers.  Iâve never played even half the size of some of the places we played this tour.  30 thousand in PA?  Get real.  Seriously though, itâs hard to process that amount of people when youâre in front of them and theyâre all watching you.  That was insane.  As was Red Rocks.  BY FAR the coolest and most breathtaking spot to play a show that Iâve been to.  It made me forget about all the other venues we played up to that point in the tour. Â
Iâve also never witnessed the level of hardcore devotion that this fan base has for @twentyonepilots. Â Iâve heard of people camping out days for their favorite bands, but Iâd never actually seen it in person, and it was inspiring. Â Plus, just about everyone in the crowd that I talked to was super cool. Â I have a theory about fans being a reflection of the band that theyâre into, and the 21P fans make Tyler and Josh look like really good dudes. Â Which they are, and it was great getting to know them. Â
Tyler introduced me to a newer game called rocket league, which is dangerous for me because I already have serious gaming problems as it is (ask my wife). Â I got hooked on that during tour, and anytime we played, he reminded me that you canât get good at a game overnight (he cooly dismantled all parts of my game that I thought I had gotten pretty good at). Â Now that Iâm home for a bit, Iâm trying to talk myself out of buying a newer system to get the game, and filling that void with some of my top NES favorites.
For real though, I was blown away by the 21P show and I wish them all the best on their quest for world domination. Â Iâm so glad we got to be a part of it, and hope we get to play with them again soon.

This summer tour has been surreal, from getting to play at legendary venues like The L.A. Forum and Red Rocks to getting to perform for the amazing @twentyonepilots fans who embraced us so kindly. Many thanks to Tyler and Josh for inviting us on this incredible tour, for treating us like family, and for inspiring us night after night.

The Emotional Roadshow with @twentyonepilots and Chef'Special was the best tour of my life thus far. After watching how Tyler and Josh treat their fans, crew, families, and bands that open for them, it is very apparent that their recent accomplishments are not happenstance. I predict that the best is yet to come for them. Just about any band in the country would have taken the chance to be on this tour and we never took it lightly that the opportunity was given to us. Thank you to our crew for doing such an amazing job for all 47 shows. Thank you to our exceptional management team, booking agency, and everyone who has worked behind the scenes. Looking forward to Voodoo Fest!
