Wow! That’s quite a presumption to make! It's one thing to not personally care for a lead vocalist’s style, but to not understand how any guys could…that’s indicative of a problem. Not a problem with David Lee Roth or his antics but a problem with Sammy Hagar.

It helps to understand the kind of guys that rise to a position where they can front a band that sells albums that go multi-platinum and sell out arenas. These are type A personality men. They’re highly competitive, highly driven men. They’d have to be or they never would have made it to where they’ve gotten. That means they can be high-strung at times.

Apparently things between the two of them got quite heated at one point in the 80s. The loudersound article said:

“At the dawn of the decade, when Roth wondered aloud to a journalist “quite what manner of a man was Sam, writing songs only about cars and not women”, Hagar responded by calling Roth a “f*ggot”, and suggested that Van Halen’s frontman wanted a ‘relationship’ with him.”

No Sammy, that wasn’t too smooth. It really, really looks like desperation on your part. It sure didn’t do you any favors to say those kinds of things.

Yes, David Lee Roth started it, in that instance, but he showed a lot more restraint and a lot more tact. Sammy Hagar has drive and he’s competitive but he came across as insecure there and that’s not the first time he's ever done that. I remember way back, before he was part of Van Halen, reading an interview with him in a rock magazine where he said words to the effect of: don’t ever question my talent.

Secure guys don’t feel the need to tell people to never question their talent.

I don't know why Sammy Hagar isn’t more secure in his belief in himself. I don’t know why he'd allow Roth’s words provoke him to that level.

You know how it comes across to me? Uncool. Sammy Hagar let Roth get under his skin. Why he’d do that is something that I can only speculate on but it's not too hard to figure out that when one guy is by objective standards a considerably better singer, it could really get to him when the other guy can entertain a crowd better than he can. Life’s not fair!

After all those years of Sammy Hagar fronting the band, people still saw still saw David Lee Roth as the quintessential Van Halen lead vocalist and saw Sammy as still being a replacement.

They’re in the entertainment business. Sammy knows this. David Lee Roth definitely knows this. It's not about who can sing the best. It's about who is the one who makes the crowd have the best time. It's about having fun. No matter how good a singer someone is, if the people didn't have a good time at his concerts, why would they keep buying tickets to see him again?

To this day David Lee Roth is considered the definitive Van Halen vocalist. He put on the performances that electrified the crowds the most, he’s the Van Halen frontman that people talked about the most and he did all that without being a great singer. What David Lee Roth was is a great frontman. Not a great singer but a great frontman.

I don’t know that Sammy Hagar has ever gotten over that. I hope he has. If he hasn't, I wish he would. He’s had a career he can be proud of. He doesn't have to sink to that level and say those kinds of things about David Lee Roth just because he can't get over the fact that David Lee Roth is cooler than Sammy Hagar.

That’s what it all comes down to. You're either cool or you’re not.

You didn't read that wrong. Phi Anselmo died and was brought back to life by paramedics.

I’ve read where another rock star who also overdosed on heroin and then was brought back to life by medical professionals seemed proud of it. Not Phil. Matter of fact, Phil Anselmo described overdosing and dying in front of friends and family as the most humiliating experience of his life.

It’s because he took that type of attitude toward it, because he didn't think it was cool, that he took responsibility for his life, and became self-accountable. He had the necessary surgery done on his back.

The surgeon inserted a six-inch titanium rod in his back. From then onwards, every day for Phil starts with an exercise regiment. He has to stretch for about half an hour every morning just to be able to carry out his daily activities.
