The ArcelorMittal Orbit, designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmondan, is an Olympic tower that stands 376 feet tall and is located at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, England. The idea to construct the ArcelorMittal Orbit occurred in a chance meeting of former London Mayor Boris Johnson and Lakshmi Mittal, CEO of the largest steel company in the world, ArcelorMittal. Johnson mentioned the idea of making a landmark that would celebrate and commemorate the London Games, and when Lakshmi Mittal heard his proposal, he was instantly on board with it. Mittal even went as far as committing his company to provide the steel it would take to build the project. Johnson had wanted something that could match the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty. The tower was intended to be a long-lasting “legacy” of London’s hosting of the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2012. Construction began on the project in 2011 and was completed in 2012.
