A Walk On The Brighter Side - Derby's Open RP
Derby continued to smile at the Baroness. He wasnât exactly sure what she meant by âswabbingâ, but was happy enough to be chatting with her. He almost contemplated bringing up the previous challenge, but decided against it. This walk was supposed to make him forget about their loss.
âWhat do you think of the challenges so far?â he asked instead, looking up at his idolized peer.
âBoring, lad. They be so simple even an addlepate could do âem! I mean, look at that wench Ashley! Ye be somethinâ else if ye be doinâ worse than âer.â The Baroness spoke honestly, not afraid to loudly jab at who she currently considered her main rival in the competition. Although most people would not be so boisterous about their disdain for someone, The Baroness didnât care. In fact, she would probably tell Ashley that to her face.
The girl paused momentarily, gasping slightly when she remembered something. âOh, Lad, what be yer opinion on âem? Ainât fair taâ give me thoughts without asking ye own!â
Derby listened to the Baronessâ answer, admiring her take-no-shit attitude. He wondered to himself, if Ashley was as bad as she was made out to be, what the girlâs motivations were. That was what made a character compelling, right? Maybe if he got to know her better.. even if she didnât like it. Though that was a venture for another time.
âOh,â the boy said, surprised to be asked his own opinion. âWell, theyâve certainly been.. interesting,â he responded, for lack of a better word âTheyâre a bit abnormal for what I was expecting when I auditioned for the show, but itâs been quite the experience nonetheless.
The Baroness simply nodded in agreement when Derby commented on the absurdity of the current challenges. For a show called Total Drama, they werenât the most dramatic things in the universe, even with the destruction of a multitude of buildings. âAye lad; I be expectinâ more dramatic things than kissinâ or sleddinâ.â The girl paused momentarily.
âActually, that be a pretty average experience in me life, but that ainât be whatâs important; what is, is that me own right-hand âands of cast-away buckos be able to pull through through current our future hardships!â
Derby nodded in agreement - kissing, cooking and sledding were pretty mundane things, the more he thought about it. The red challenge had been the more hectic so far. Would the show get more outrageous? He wasn't sure whether to hope so or hope not. He agreed with her second point too. He smiled, glad their team had managed to pick up the least internal so far.. Yet they'd lost two people. "It's weird.. I believe our team has accumulated the least total amount of internalized drama, but we've lost the most people." He frowned. Maybe something new should happen within the team..
A Walk On The Brighter Side - Derby's Open RP
Derby felt a bit better knowing that he wasnât the only one whoâd gotten lost in this strange city. He paused a moment, thinking to himself that maybe the two of them could stay lost a little longer - if only to make Ry less bored and more happy. âPerhaps we could.. find you some targets.â Derby proposed, hoping to stay on Ryâs good side. Plus, it might be kind of cool to see someone shoot a gun.. especially considering it wasnât at him.
Ry gestured with his gun down the street for Derby and uttered a curt, âLead the way, Fanfiction.net; if you can find me a good enough shooting range, then maybe I wonât sic my pranking fâteammate on you.â It wasnât really a threat on his part, because he wouldnât have the time or energy to go out and find wherever that bastard was lurking just for him to attack Derby with some relentless pranks.
âMaybe Iâll even let you try to shoot the gun, if youâre not scared of a little violenceâŚâ
Derby was never one to lead on adventures - thatâd always been his friendâs job - so he understandably felt a little unsure of this proposed expedition. On the other hand, he wasnât really in the mood to be pranked, and maybe it would be fun to be the leader for once. It was all he wrote about anyway, valiant leaders saving the day. So despite his uncertainty, he decided to run with it. Not literally, of course; walking would do just fine.
âIâll try my best,â Derby replied, seeming not to mind the nickname that had stuck from their earlier meetings. He started on his way down the abandoned street, before turning to talk to Ry while they walked. âSo what do you like to do? Besides assigning nicknames and falling on people.â
As they walked down the road, Ry expected it to go on in an almost serene silence, but he quickly realized that was a misdirection on his part⌠Of course, heâd be the only one who enjoyed silence as opposed to talking, so when Derby asked him a question, he felt a vague sense of deja vu erupt through him; nobody had really casually talked to him in a long time⌠The only conversations heâd had were with a pranking ass and his teammatesâŚand none of those encounters could be considered âcasual.â
âHuh⌠Draw, paint, make sarcastic quips, and almost get killed by nearly everything and everyone on this show.â He told him, half of it serious. âAnd Iâll have you know, Iâve only done that twice in this damn city; one time on you and one time when I was at the abandoned theme park down the wayâŚbutâŚthat was because I didnât want to lose a dare I made while drunkenly hyâdrunkâŚâ
Derby took down mental notes about Ryâs interests, considering he didnât have his notebook for once. He nodded as they continued to walk. âSo youâre a sardonic artist,â he proposed with a small smile. âHe sounds like he could be an interesting character,â the writer thought. Derby then paused, waiting for Ry to ask him a question in return. When that didnât happen, he tried to keep their conversation going.Â
âWhat kind of art to you make? I mean, whatâs your style like?â
Ry paused in thought, never truly taking into account what his art style was like. Heâd never actually described it before, because nobody really asked about it in the first place. The only one whoâd cared didnât anymoreâŚÂ
Contemplating it further, he glanced over his shoulder, eyebrows knitting together. âItâsâŚrustic? NoâŚmorbid⌠It has a lot of darknessâŚorâŚblacks and graysâŚâ The idea of describing his work left a sour taste in his mouth since he couldnât seem to do it. When heâd described it when he was younger, he used to say unique; now he couldnât even begin to comprehend how heâd even subject it to one work.
âWell, itâs like my personality: confusing, conflicting, depressingâŚ.macabre, as the coconut head of my team refers to it.â
âHm,â was all Derby could say in response. It sounded interesting, to say the least, if not a bit abnormal. But abnormal certainly wasnât a bad thing.
âMaybe I could see it some time..â he suggested, before deciding to maybe look at their surroundings and actually find something to shoot at. As they wandered on, Derby squinted into the sun as they approached what appeared to be an abandoned convenience store.
âCompressed air in chip bags might be fun to shoot,â he offered up as they got closer. The windows were covered in dust and dirt, and the boarded up doorway had already been broken into. Derby wondered how much stuff would be left.

A Walk On The Brighter Side - Derby's Open RP
Derby smiled at The Baronessâs hatred of math, wondering if maybe one day theyâd start a war on math together. That could be fun. When she explained why she was out, he nodded.
âI suppose so. Though I like to pass time in my room reading. Itâs quite fun if you ask me.â Derby grinned proudly with a small chuckle. âI need to get out more, I think.â
The Baroness nodded slightly when Derby mentioned needing to get out more. Carefully, she took a moment to eye him over. âAye lad; ye been needinâ too. Ye be lookinâ like a malnourished stick.â She sated rather bluntly, not meaning to be insulting but meaning to tell Derby she agreed with that statement.
Derby looked down at his torso. Did he really look like a stick? He certainly wasnât strong, but he had always considered himself to be average. He looked back up at the Baroness. âThat bad, huh?â
âNot bad,â The Baroness clarrified, placing her arms against her waist as she imitated a power pose. âYe just be needinâ taâ swab the decks nâ build some muscle! Canât be havinâ a scurvy ridden, boneless crew!â
Derby smiled a bit. At least she was encouraging, and she probably hadnât meant anything mean about his physique. And, letâs be real, she wasnât wrong. âHow do you stay fit?â Derby asked curiously, impressed by the Baronessâs build.
âGlad ye be askinâ, lad.â The Pirate girl grinned, quickly flexing her arm to show off her point. âWhen ye be sailinâ âtha seven seas, ye be needinâ âta do lotsâa liftinâ, swabbinâ, in keepinâ yerself in shape!â

A Walk On The Brighter Side - Derby's Open RP
âDeath is just a part of life,â Ry had said. What a strange way of thinking; it wasnât exactly pessimistic, but it certainly wasnât an optimistic one.Â
âYou make a good point,â Derby replied quietly âAs long as you arenât into killing people,â He tried not to be too concerned about Ry throwing knives at another contestant. âI suppose itâs not a bad way to pass the timeâŚ?â
âIâve got more self-control,â he told him honestly; the fact that he thought of karma killing people was more mature to him than outright stabbing someone over petty thingsâlike losing or whateverâŚ
âAnyway, I want to shoot this gun, so take me somewhere, or Iâll put you down as a target.â It wasnât nearly s effective of a threat now that he told Derby he wasnât really interested in stabbing or shooting him, but he was bored as death during a babyâs birth.
Derby wasnât really sure how threatened he should feel. Ry did just say he wasnât looking to murder anyone, buuut he still had a gun in his hand.
âI.. have no idea where we are,â Derby admitted with a meek smile, âso Iâm not sure I could bring you anywhere..â
Ry glanced around the area and realized that he had no idea where heâd gone either in this instant. Honestly, heâd been so caught up in just being away from everyone else, that he completely forgot to mark his path back.
Should he be ashamed that he made a stupid mistake? Yes. Was he in this instance? Fuck no.
âI didnât think about it when I was walking here, so I guess I donât know eitherâŚâ He admitted with a shrug as if this didnât bother him one bit. âIâll just use fucking landmarks, or Iâll travel to that dilapidated building in the distance from the second challenge⌠Itâs not hard to make our way back from there, but that only solves your damn issue.â
Derby felt a bit better knowing that he wasn't the only one who'd gotten lost in this strange city. He paused a moment, thinking to himself that maybe the two of them could stay lost a little longer - if only to make Ry less bored and more happy. "Perhaps we could.. find you some targets." Derbyâs eyes widened at the mention of a gun. âYou found a gun? Why would anyone leave a gun lying around?!â And Ry wanted to shoot it?! Derby hoped he didnât mean at a person. âAnd if he did, I hope he isnât thinking me,â he thought.
Ry snorted and jumped down, pulling the gun from his pocket. Twirling it with his finger in the trigger guard, he calmly showed it to Derby. âIt wasnât just lying around; I had to take my idiotic teammate, Dennis, to a theater to retrieve itâŚâ Heâd say that night was fun if it werenât for the fact heâd feel closer to people and risk getting himself hurt there.
To add on to the story, he continued, âI found it the first day we were dropped here in this fuck town underneath the front desk at a movie theater, but it turns out Chris had a fucking murderous robot waiting for me and Benny that dayâŚand I dropped it to escape that fucking placeâŚâ
Derby half-listened to Ryâs story, while the other half of his focus was keeping an eye on the gun now spinning around Ryâs finger. âThatâs.. an intense story,â Derby commented, uncertain of how true the story really was. It was fairly unlikely that Chris had rigged any of the rickety, old buildings.. wasnât it? The more he thought about it, the more unsure of himself he became.
âAnyway, why did you.. keep it?â Derby asked, his left hand resting in his pocket.
âItâs not nearly as intense as it sounds,â Ry lied to himself, shooting it down instantly; it was something he did, after all, so it wasnât anything worth being complimented. âJust me dealing with Dennis and Benny being idiots.â
When Derby asked why he kept it, Ry wanted to slap his forehead âI went back to get it; why would I get rid of it?â
âIt sounds pretty intense..â Derby murmured, determined to write about an evil robot fighting the.. well, he hadnât decided Ryâs part in his overall story so far. He needed to figure that out soon.Â
âI meant why did you go back for it?â Derby asked, realizing he mustâve sounded stupid by asking his original question.
âIf you want to call it that, then fine, but I donât see it that wayâŚâ He mumbled in response, stopping his gun spinning. âBut honestly, the most intense thing that happened was that we almost were killed a few times; but death is just a part of life.â
Pausing, he wondered why Derby was so curious about him and his gun; maybe he thought he was murdering anyone who came into the city? Who knows⌠âHonestly, the whitest people on this show have had knives and little self-control with them⌠I mean, one of them is a fucking murderer, seen with proof of murder, and still walks the streets like itâs nothing, which is bad writing if this were a fake show; butâŚâ He shrugged his shoulders and turned his head. âBut Iâm not into murdering people or stabbing, even if I throw knives at Dennisâs head from time-to-time; I just want to shoot things to avoid dying of boredom when I donât feel like drawing.â
âDeath is just a part of life,â Ry had said. What a strange way of thinking; it wasnât exactly pessimistic, but it certainly wasnât an optimistic one.Â

A Walk On The Brighter Side - Derby's Open RP
After a loss and elimination ceremony like that, surely all of the Penguins were feeling down on the luck. Derby was no exception. While he ultimately was uncertain about how his vote would affect the future of their team, he knew this wasnât something he could dwell on. There would be more losses to come, and the less he felt bad for them, the better off heâd be. Heâd just have to cheer himself, and as he glanced out his window, glaring into the sun, he had just the idea.
The day was fairly warm as Derby explored the abandoned city theyâd been dropped into. As he walked on, he admired the way the shadows cast by the buildings made them seem eerie yet beautiful. Heâd have to bring his journal along next time and write about it. Derby quickly got lost in thought thinking about how great the scenery was, and in turn, got actually lost. When he realized he was in unfamiliar territory, he looked around nervously, and was lucky enough to spot another contestant. He started to approach them, hoping they would eventually wander back to the hotel together.
(Letâs liven up this blog a little, shall we?)
The Baroness was still upset at the turn-out of the previous challenge. She was, however, more upset at herself than anything. It was her fault that their team had come in last; had she not suggested making lemon squares, then maybe, just maybe, they would have had a shot at winning this. And maybe then, one of her own wouldnât had to have walked the metaphoric plank to elimination,
The pirate girl sighed as those thoughts entered her mind. She really shouldnât let this bother her as much as they were. Yet she was; she couldnât help but feel like a failure of a leader upon the realization that Selene was the one going home hit her like a sack of bricks.
However, thatâs when she noticed a familiar face walking towards her; it was Derby. Quickly, she put on a smile, shortening the distance between them with a walk. âAhoy there, me bucko!â
When the Baroness smiled at him, he smiled back widely, happy to be with someone he looked up to again. âHello, Baroness,â Derby said, his thumbs resting in the pockets of his jeans. âHowâre you today?â He could only imagine that she was feeling something similar to himself, but it didnât hurt to ask anyway. Maybe she hadnât taken it that hard, and was already ready for the next challenge.
She paused momentarily when Derby asked how she was doing. She knew he was going to ask that, but wasnât necessarily prepared to answer him. âI be good lad,â She lied, a slight smile to her face as to not worry her team with her troubles. The last thing a pirate captain needs is for her crew to spend all her time worrying about the captain. âHow ye be doinâ? The bloody challenge was as rough as a choppy sea, was it not?â
See? Sheâd already moved past it, there was no sense in simmering in his guilt.
âIâm alright. And it was,â he replied, âbut I suppose we were bound to lose eventually. Iâm no math whiz, but I know odds when I see them. And theyâve got to be better for us now. Whatâs the likeliness of us losing twice in a row, anyway?â Derby barely pondered the question for a moment, before shaking his head. âI came out here to get away from that.â He looked up at the Baroness, before asking, âwhy are you out and about?â
âMathâŚâ The Baroness hung up on, snarling slightly in disgust. âThe Davy Jones Locker of edumacation everywhere.â She continued, her tone completely honest. The Baroness hated school in general, but math was a special enemy for her. When Derby asked her why she was out, she simply nodded her head along. âBe needinâ taâ get out, lad. Canât stay cooked up in yer cabin all day less ye be wishinâ taâ perish from boredom.â
Finding peace had been so surreal after all the hubbub of the elimination and his sucky ass teammatesâ idea of lemons; he really just wanted to get away from all of his teammates now⌠Whether it be Kiki and her lackluster leading today; Lavender and her obnoxious cries for help at every turn; or Dennis for his stupidity and forcing of Ry to babysit him during the entire challenge to avoid instant elimination. Whether Chris had meant that they would all be eliminated or one person would be didnât concern Ry anymore; he just needed an escape.
Seated on the ledge of a dilapidated and almost-seeming-as-if-itâd-been-abandoned-long-before-the-city building, he stared down at the five foot drop below and groaned, his eyes trying to stay open with all the silent brooding he was doing for himself; the oddest thing was that he didnât even have his sketchbook with him at this point to draw onâŚ
He leaned back and stared up at the ceiling above him, counting every last wire that hung down above him like it was the night sky. That was when he heard the approaching footsteps of a contestant and almost squeezed his fingers into the concrete he was lying on. âIf youâre a member of my team, get the fuck away from me right now.â
Derby looked around confusedly, wondering where the voice had come from. After looking around cluelessly, he finally looked in front of himself and saw a familiar personâs legs hanging down a few steps in front of him. He glanced back to where he couldâve sworn he saw another contestant, but found that they were gone. Not that he planned on avoiding Ry, no; it was just that their past run-ins had been a bit.. tense? Was that the word? Either way, he shrugged it off, hoping to get on the boyâs good side after remembering that Ry was also in an alliance with the Baroness, and just because he felt he needed more friends on this show. His team first loss after Alexandria made him realize how much he could value more of the contestants. And how intriguing each one was in theyâre own way; it would be a shame not to get to know his subjects.
âItâs, uh, just Derby,â the boy replied, looking up at Ry (which would never happen if they were on even ground). âWhatâre you doing?â
Hearing the voice of the most sane member of the Penguins didnât stir Ry to sit up and strike up a conversation one bit; he was here to get awayâprimarily from his teamâand just relax for once; and it wouldnât hurt to grab a few hours of rest before he went to bed, right? It was when the boy asked him what he was doing that made him realize that he wasnât going to get out of this conversation easily, soâŚhe decided that maybe it was time to actually do somethingâŚ
Sitting up, he looked down toward the boy below him and thought up an answer. âPlanning something,â he told him honestly, pulling his dangling legs up to cross them. âFound a gun earlier in this damn competition for top idiot and I want to shoot itâŚâ
Derbyâs eyes widened at the mention of a gun. âYou found a gun? Why would anyone leave a gun lying around?!â And Ry wanted to shoot it?! Derby hoped he didnât mean at a person. âAnd if he did, I hope he isnât thinking me,â he thought.
