Okay. The more I read about WandaVision’s behind the scenes, the more I feel incredibly uneasy.
This will be my last post about the MCU for a very long time. But, from those of you who know me since day 1, I’m (in)famous for my long posts. And this is one of those.
Reading comics is an exercise that is not entirely up to the public. It’s literally a book adaptation. You may enjoy it without the main source. But it has to be good in order to work. I don’t need to mention names, you know what I’m talking about.
But I’m not gonna lie. It saddens me SO MUCH when you have one job to do, which is research, and you fail to do so. And I’m not talking only about comics, no. Mephisto’s name is right there in Wanda’s entry on Marvel fandom wiki. Right after Billy’s and Tommy’s names.
The more the days go by, the more I feel I was used and tricked. From what I’ve seen? Writers read three books: Tom King’s Vision (2015), Bendis’ House of M (and that’s arguable because have you seen Stephen, Pietro or Magneto? Yeah, me neither) and Steve Englehart‘s The Vision and The Scarlet Witch. And I’m not even a fan to know that. It shows.
Why am I so upset about it? Because Scott and the whole DS crew gave their lives and souls for an accurate adaptation of what we know today as a certain character called Doctor Strange.
There are so many dark references, to name a few: the Evil Eye, the book of Cagliostro, an Into Shamballa reference, the Wand of Watoomb, in addition to many artifacts named after their magic deities, Kaecilius’ very existence and all those tweets featuring Stephen’s quotes like Shadow and Light #2 that people still ask me about. The difference… IT SHOWS. Everything on that movie is a reference, a tribute to comic books.
It’s not only about expectation. There’s a huge difference between expectating that Dottie is a known character and putting Evan fucking Peters to play a character named Pietro. It’s low. And I don’t like to be treated this way, I’m not a hype machine for you to promote your show. Scott didn’t treat me this way. He was honest with his movie and he studied so much. I’ve been following his tweets for years, I know he used to tweet very old comic book quotes. He was there, reading and reading. And this is why I left the theater that night with bright eyes and a big smile.
I know now why Wanda was awake while her astral form was reading the Darkhold. It’s not because she’s powerful. It’s because they didn’t read comics. They don’t know the body is useless when you project your astral form lmao.
This is entirely personal and I’m quite aware it sounds like ranting. It’s true. I am ranting. Because you’re creating something that is not nearly as popular as a movie and 1) you don’t give the writers the due credits and 2) you’re not supporting the very core of your own work.
I’m disappointed. I’ve never been more confident that what I’m doing here on my blog is important. It’s out of love, years of love and devotion.
Feel free to disagree, of course. Again, it’s entirely a personal perspective. I just wanted to get it off my chest.
And yes, I’m completely done with rumors, theories and news. I’ll be watching the shows and I’ll continue wearing my clown costume. But my heart? It belongs to 616-Stephen. It always has. And that’s where I’m putting my devotion on.
