Life Update
I haven’t been posting a lot this summer because it turns out that traveling every weekend to a new city is EXHAUSTING. So I’ll just tell you guys the highlights.
- Brought my German skills up to “Can generally communicate with someone who doesn’t speak much English. Lots of hand gestures are necessary though”
- Hiked in the Black forest
- Went to Prague. Ate wonderful cheap food
- Went topless in a Munich park and swam in a stream. It was basically paradise
- Had a fun weekend in Paris. Bought a pufferfish in an antique shop
- Went to Rome by myself and survived. Saw a cool modern theatre show involving horses. Ate tons of wonderful gelato
- Saw the ocean (In Barcelona) for the first time in half a decade and was overwhelmed with happiness
Now I’m going to Poland for a week to see my relatives and then I have to return to real life again
there’s basically no culture of programming in my lab in Germany and it’s driving me crazy
- there’s been a memory error causing their measurement program to crash randomly for over five years and no one has thought to fix it
- to process the data, they drag they data to origin and run a custom routine. Then my supervisor wants me to copy all the graphs to a powerpoint manually. Now this wouldn’t be so bad if there was only a little bit of data. But this is about 50 files per day. it takes HOURS
I think I’ve figured out how to have a custom origin routine work on several files at once and let’s all pray that it works because even if I’m leaving in a few weeks, I don’t want these people to live this wayÂ
hey guys I’m still alive I’ve just been going on a traveling binge every weekend which leaves me exhausted
next weekend I’m going to Rome. alone. let’s all say a prayer for my survival.

The rats were enjoying some canned papaya, but then Wonka decided it was not for sharing.
(excuse the few sneezes, Zan had a bit of a little fit when the vid was taken.)
Behold Woodfer, one of my sweet pig-friends. He lounges pensively when I work on new songs, likes to have his cheeks scruffled, and has a wild passion for radicchio. Here he is striking a pose, with his enigmatic visage and his tiny tiny feet.
Here is a story about a jealous Elephant Shrew
it’s so weird seeing your own pictures randomly reposted
Hello, Instagram! It’s time for your dose of #WeeklyFluff. Today’s furry feature is an adorable pair of Guinea Pigs named Fuzzberta and MiniGuineaPig (@fuzzberta). This duo’s dizzying collection of dapper clothes and accessories is enough to make any pampered pet green with envy. If your feed could use a dash of playful Guinea Pig fluff, follow @fuzzberta.
Author and neurologist Oliver Sacks is a really big fan of cephalopods. He has squid shirts, stuffed cuttlefish, and a cephalopod even graces his letterhead. So back in 1997, when we were planning on interviewing him and talking about the search for the giant squid in the same show, Dr. Sacks asked if he could stay the entire time.

I’m going to Prague this weekend! After asking everyone I knew in the city, someone finally agreed to go with me!
OH THANK GOD I found the key to the bicycle lock
it was in a book
oh god I lost the key to the bicycle my supervisor gave me
Levitating Whales
Humpback whales are often considered to be the most acrobatic of the great whales, often exhibiting breaching behaviors.
A breach is defined as “a jump in which at least 40% of the body leaves the water” (via Encyclopedia of Marine Mammals). Despite their massive size, Humpback whales will occasionally display full, 100% breaches in which they appear to “levitate” when photographed, like in some of the above images
To accomplish a full breach, Humpback whales must break the surface at ~15 knots (8 m/s)-Â nearly their maximum speed!

Holy W.O.W….
I finally saw the psychiatrist today!
her English was not very good, but we made it through the appointment with hand gestures and word guessing
I got my prescription for Sertraline, and it only cost 20 euros for 50 pills
tldr; none of my fears of bankruptcy or bureaucratic nightmares panned out and I’m happy I get to start treating all this junk

today I had to explain to my supervisor that there is an actual debate in the US on whether women can breastfeed in public
and the appointment today was at 8am so I spend several days trying to get up earlier but it backfired and I was basically a useless blob in the lab and my supervisor sounded super disappointed in me
