Do you draw from memory/imagination or image references or real life references?
for sketchbook stuff I mostly use photo references :) I try to source inspiration from my walks in nature/outside. so i'll see like a squirrel or something at the park and go home, google Squirrel, and draw said squirrel hehe.
but not always, sometimes ill be scrolling through Pinterest and find something that looks cool to draw
drawing from imagination is so hard... maybe I should do it more. but I have been cooking stuff up in the studio that kind of requires both my Brain and my Eyes, so I'm getting there I think. i've been collecting big seashells at the antique store for the past year or so and i feel so inspired by them all the time... they're just so beautiful to me... so different from what we find on the east coast... so I'm drawing them from life, and then adding an imagined ocean scene behind it. usually I just visit the beach and stare at the ocean for awhile, and then try my best to remember it later when I go to add it in at the studio.
I'm thinking of the ocean a lot lately. and I'm thinking of water here on earth; how we are all just water, how water is so peaceful and relaxing. I love drawing animals so of course it makes sense that I'm so drawn to sea creatures right now! a-ha!! it's all making sense now.... hahaha
I think of it as writing a love letter to the ocean <3 <3 I love u, ocean!
when the weather warms up i am just so excited to be able to go for beach walks more :) I keep telling my friends it's a beach gurl summerrrr.
ANYWAY, here is the start of one of those seashell imagined drawings that I mentioned earlier. I share more about the process on my patreon (in general, not just about this work!) for those interested. thanks for reading xoxo
and this was my view from the day that inspired this background:
this one is not done, probably not even close. I'm still figuring stuff out.
