when a pair of slender arms wrap around his torso, eric begins to exist only as a series of contradictions. he freezes up, he wants to melt into this touch; he knows exactly who this is, he wants so badly to be wrong. time seems to slow down as his captor pokes her head out from behind him and he comes face to face with none other than nell herself. she looks as beautiful as he remembers her, and with every artless bat of her eyelashes, eric feels a sharp tug on his heartstrings. he looks into her eyes and understands one important reality: she doesn’t remember, at least not what really matters.
“hey, nelliebean,” he finally replies with an effortlessness that almost frightens him. the words tumble out of his mouth, as if to say, i’ve been waiting for you. “happy valentine’s day!” i missed you. i missed you. i missed you.
eric slings an arm across nell’s shoulders, smoothing back her hair with his other hand as his stomach twists itself into a thousand knots. he remembers everything, of course. he remembers the feeling of her fingers interlocking with his, the delicate scent of her skin. he remembers the way her features light up when she smiles, the lilting melody of her voice. how could he ever forget the exquisite thrill of loving her? and perhaps more importantly, how could he ever forget that when he lost her, he lost a part of himself too?
he briefly wonders if this is all part of an exceptionally cruel joke, but nell is looking at him too expectantly for this to not be real. how can he tell her with his own mouth that maybe their great love story was never meant to be, that ten years from now, they’d be no better than strangers? there is so much more for him to appreciate now that he knows how this all ends; he wants to hold her just a little bit longer before she slips away from him again.
“i don’t really remember,” he says, frowning as he feigns a wistful tone. eric doesn’t want to lie to her, but just once, just for a little while, he wants to be selfish. “were you happy? if you were happy, then i must have been too.”
and god, does he wish that was the truth.
