this took me so long… i’m not gonna spend time formatting it ⚰️ so here, have a lohenlie hunger games au
lohen and amélie who both originate from district four, whose main industry is fishing along with being considered a career district.
lohen is, of course, a career tribute. he originally began as one with his friend theodore, someone he considered to be his first friend and in a world as broken as this, friendships were never something he’d been very keen on having. the two grew close, especially due to their shared ideals on becoming victors, however their plans of winning games back-to-back would never come to fruition, as theodore would unfortunately die after being reaped for the games several years earlier. this would only further drive him to become a victor. in lohen’s eyes, competing in the hunger games and winning was not about surviving or receiving the glory/riches. rather, winning would prove he isn’t weak and has the strength/power to win in the games created by the capital that were ultimately meant to show just how powerless the districts really are. because when you have power, nothing can hold you down.
amélie on the other hand is a covey girl <3 if i recall, most of them were rounded up in district 12 but for the sake of this au, i like to imagine some of them managed to get separated and end up in other districts, they’re just very sparse compared to district 12. while many seek to become career tributes, amélie holds no interest whatsoever, she despises the games — rightfully so. on days when peacekeepers patrolling are low, she can be seen sneaking off with a certain white-haired fellow out of town towards the coasts after working hours have concluded (this is totally not kazuha guys :D). they were close companions, always seen together wherever they went. lohen can even recall spotting the two on numerous occasions sneaking off after sunset like some “melodramatic lovebirds off to talk about running away together." amélie owns a small lyre! she’s not one for singing necessarily and leaves that to her companion because of his poetry and way with the “flowery words” as she often dubs.
lohenlie’s hunger games would undoubtedly be a quarter quell, specifically the one that occurred for the 25th games, which required the citizens of each district to vote on who would be sent to compete. this is also the game where the first arena was built, the use of the cornucopia began, and the infamous phrase “may the odds be ever in your favor” was coined. regarding the first two things especially, it made lohen want to participate all the more — these games were going to be monumental and quite frankly, he was never too keen on having the games take place in abandoned towns or areas like they initially were. how could he ever hope to show his true potential there?
since this quarter quell had a voting system, there were certainly instances of foul play that happened across several districts, including in district four but not in the way you’d think. lohen rigged the voting so that his name would be called, securing him a place as a tribute of the games. for the ladies, amélie just happened to be voted. she had no other family or relatives alive, nor was she necessarily close to anyone else in the district. therefore, people believed her loss would cause the least amount of hurt — except for one individual. her doomed lover (as lohen called him) caused quite the spectacle during the reaping ceremony when her name was called, nearly causing a fight to break out with the peacekeepers. lohen was entertained, but only for a moment. their bittersweet parting was almost suffocating to watch.
though in some ways, he did feel bad for his tribute partner. it was clear that this world nor the games did not suit her, and having her enter the games would just be the equivalent of sending a lamb to the slaughter. once training commences however, lohen quickly finds out that amélie was not exactly weak. in fact, he was surprised to see she could actually handle a dagger and a spear fairly well, most of which was thanks to her companion back home.
“oh, so it was that doomed lover of yours back home that taught you how to wield a spear! now that makes sense.”
“you sure about that? because the way he acted when you were reaped tells a different story.”
“what’s your deal? first you talk about how exciting it is to compete in these games during the train ride here, and now you’re mocking kazuha. do you find the suffering of others to be that amusing? …you make me sick.”
not only could she be deadly with a weapon, but she was even cold with her words. lohen was growing more and more curious. ever since they arrived at the capitol, amélie has never offered him one smile, much less spoken a word to him. it was a tad surprising, considering how she seemed to be the exact opposite back in district four whenever he saw her with her companion, who he now learned was named kazuha. admittedly, such a detail did hurt him a little, but that feeling lingered for only a short time before he went back to pestering her to train with him, eager to see what her level of strength was. one day, as lohen was following her around begging endlessly to just have one sparring session with him, amélie’s patience snapped and she swiftly held a dagger to his throat, effectively silencing him and telling him to leave her alone or she’ll silence him for good. that would be the only time she ever showed violence to another person (and the last).
as a stunned lohen was left behind, two things crossed his mind. 1) what was it about this girl that had him so drawn in? and 2) should he have her as an ally?
moving on to the interviews, lohen was a hit with the capitol, he did not hold back at all. many in the audience loved his desire for victory like it was bloodlust (the show host did too but he was also kind of freaked out by lohen LMAO laughing awkwardly whenever he made a joke about killing him live on TV). when it was time for amélie’s interview he watched and once again he saw the girl he knew from district four come to life, gentle smiles and playing the lyre, not the one who’d threatened him with a dagger two days ago. side tangent, but i think due to how different amélie and lohen present themselves in the interviews they become favorites like “wow look at the duality of district four! a tribute out for blood and the other a gentle soul” crying emoji. amélie probably even gave an indirect insult towards lohen when asked about what she thinks of him all with a smile on her face. “lohen? if we’re lucky, he might end up dead before the games even start” ….. anyways!
when the games actually start, lohen remains solo for the first half of the game. having allies wouldn’t work out, even if it was his own tribute partner, he concluded. trust no one but yourself. yet when the countdown began, his eyes looked for her before beginning to strategize, and each time the canon went off and the fallen tributes were announced, he secretly hoped she wasn’t one of them.
im getting tiredbut basically at some point dueing the games lohen finds amélie seriously injured and helps (with some reluctance from her). she tells him that some tributes teamed up together to try and take him down since he was viewed as the biggest threat in the arena. they were having a hard time tracking him down though, so they decided to track amélie down and eliminate her first in order to remove the possibility of them being secret allies. due to this, they agree to team up, and as expected, they grow closer and amélie learns the true reason for why lohen is so desperate to become a victor. in return, he also learns more about amélie, realizing that while she can handle weapons and knows basic survival, if it ever came down to it, she could never bring herself to kill someone else, a vulnerability she’s all too aware of. there’s also some #jealousy moments between lohen and kazuha when the former suddenly begins asking so many questions about the latter and when amélie questions him about, he just brushes it off with the excuse of wanting to know whether he’s a formidable foe or not (in terms of fighting). he doesn’t realize he’s actually falling for her.
they make a deal that if it comes down to the last few tributes including them, amélie has to kill him (he’s grown a soft spot for her. he’s cooked). but if amélie doesn't make it to that point, then lohen has to win.
the tributes that we’re chasing amélie down before come back, and a small fight occurs (literally a four vs two) but lohen, in an attempt to protect amélie gets injured. they create some kind of a diversion to escape, however amélie is forced to carry most of lohen’s weight which doesn’t get them very far.
it wouldn’t be long until they’d be caught, and in lohen’s current state, running wasn’t going to be an option for much longer. lohen could practically sense her coming to this realization, the look in her eyes said it all, but he refused. he insisted he was fine and could still keep her safe while injured. after a bit of back and forth, amélie eventually caved.
“alright, fine. i’ll believe you.. but for now, just get some rest. we should still have plenty of time before they find us.” reaching in for her bag, she hands him a flask filled with water. “drink, you’re dehydrated.”
and like a fool, he did. each time she had offered him water before, lohen never accepted, always accusing her of poisoning the water. it was always in a playful manner but he knew better and he should've still. but he allowed himself to get too close, to care so much about her enough to let his guard down for the first time yet she ended up “betraying” that trust in the most unfair way possible. by the time he realized what was happening it was too late. he tried everything to fight it off, telling her to stop playing this stupid little prank and demanding not to do anything stupid. but all he can remember is the sight of her apologetic smile, mouthing the words “i’m sorry” before leaving with nothing but his dagger in hand in the direction where the other tributes chasing them were.
when he came to, some time later, he was disoriented at first; couldn’t recall a single thing that had happened. then it all came crashing down like a pile of bricks. his hands searched his pocket where the dagger always was — gone. without waiting for the drug to wear off, lohen immediately stood and began running in the direction amélie went, calling out to her with such emotion, he nearly sounded like a madman.
finally, he finds her, but the sight he sees causes him more pain than any wound could. he stumbles as he reaches her, trembling hands reaching out to her lifeless body and his crimson-tinted eyes quickly being filled with water — a sensation he hasn’t felt for a long time… and it stings. terribly so. blood has seeped into her clothes at her chest, something lohen attempts to hide in vain by placing his hand there, as if not being able to see it would not make it true. but the lack of a heartbeat he feels beneath his palm says otherwise. then he calls out to her, begging..pleading she wakes up, unable to resist throwing in an insult or two about his stupid she was hoping that could somehow spur her to give him a witty remark back — anything to hear her voice again. in the end, all that greets him is silence.
“we’re allies for now, but when it comes down to the last few tributes, you have to kill me. either that or we leave and go our own separate ways.”
“sure. but if i die before that, then you have win. you have to prove president snow you’re the strongest after all right?”
bullets points because i can’t write anymore:
lohen wins and becomes the victor
he stayed holding amélie lifeless body for so long, that it eventually came down to him and one other tribute who had to come find him (literally had never seen something so terrifying yet sad than at that moment)
marked as one of the most brutal deaths in the games ever.
idk how tributes are escorted out if the arena atp but i imagine that when gamemakers are going to grab amélie’s body he like. yells at them to not touch her but ultimately gets dragged away
definitely had a talk with snow before and after the games. the first warning him to not cause commotion in the games that could cause a supposed uprising or challenge the capital’s authority and then anger the games telling lohen how sorry he is for his loss and that perhaps for his sake, it was for the best.
literally from that day on, lohen began consuming poison in order to become immune to it so that one day, he wouldn’t let himself be drugged like amélie did to him
kazuha hates his guts at first because “he was supposed to protect her” but over the years it dies down. now they simply dont talk and avoid each other at all times
their argument would be so angsty and full of drama omg im sorry im crying just imagining it ahhshejwjsjwb
