like I fear we as a fandom really are going to keep having the same conversations forever if EVERY time we get new material or a new interview that sheds a different light on stringently held beliefs, certain factions just start working overtime to paper them over w layers of denial. it was the same shit w the interview in January where GRRM talked about Tyrion’s fate - basically no one round here talks about it bc its implications are pretty alarming for the party line. swear to god man

Man I love that Ned is just mid. He's an ok fighter but not incredible. He's not ugly but he's not super handsome. He's of average height. Everything about him is just so regular. It's one of my favorite things about him

100% agreed, but I also think it's the case that Ned Stark is largely average in terms of the metrics by which masculinity is judged in Westeros - fighting prowess, height, beauty, charisma - but excels in other, 'less flashy' areas, such as administrative work, managing people fairly, upholding a moral centre, even military strategy (judging on the basis of victories) if not swordsmanship itself. These things make him highly competent at being a lord and they're why Ned's so respected by the North (& sometimes beyond the North), but I think they also showcase that the metrics of idealised Westerosi masculinity have almost nothing to do with one's capability for leadership (case in point: Robert) despite being seen as necessary.
