City of Bones was written in 2005, published in 2007 and was one of Cassie’s first ever books. It’s not going to be some masterpiece and should not be held to the same standards as books (or a show) written today. (though ever shtv writing is questionable) 

Clary is a 15 year old teenager at the beginning of City of Bones whose mother was just kidnapped, found out her whole life has been a life and was turned up side down. She’s afraid, she’s gonna act out, she’s gonna act irrational and be a scared, bratty kid. AND. SHE. HAS. THAT. RIGHT. 

Alec, Jace and Izzy have been raised in a world where they expect children to grow up and fight, where they’re trained to be soldiers (it’s more true in Jace’s case). They’ve been raised to not like mundanes or downworlders (it’s not who they actually are, but its a product of their raising). Children in general pick up on their parents actions and beliefs. THEIR. PREJUDGES. ARE. NOT. THEIRS.

Jace was literally raised to be a solider, he’s gonna be closed off and an ass to those he doesn’t know or trust. In cob, Jace saw his father murdered in front of him when he was ten years old - that’s gonna fuck up a kid. Jace is an emotional abuse survivor, he had a fucked up childhood, he was never loved properly until he might the Lightwoods. Cut him a break. He was RUDE TO EVERYONE WHO WASN’T ALEC AND IZZY. 

Simon is Clary’s best friend and she mostly hung out with guys all the life, she doesn’t know how to act around girls. She’s not gonna know how to act around Izzy (and Clary only ever called Izzy a bitch when Simon was in trouble). Same with Izzy. They are two girls who have never had a girl friend and Clary almost could have gotten Jace killed when they first met her,so as far as Izzy knew, Clary was just a stupid mundane sticking her nose where he doesn’t belong. 

Alec is a closeted gay teen living in a homopobic society, he’s scared and acts out when Clary throws it in his face. He was also raised to be a solider, he was raised around people who could take a hit/throw. In the moment when he was scared and frightened, he forgot that Clary has no training/is basically a mundane and he IMMEDIATELY regrets that decision. 

Alec is also an 18 year old who had never been in a real relationship, was insercue, being manipulated by a vampire and was in a relationship with someone who wasn’t open about his past. 

Simon is a teenager who’s nerdy as fuck and never had an actually relationship before. Excuse him for not knowing how to act/seeing signs. Also he never cheated anyway but.

All the characters are immature, teenagers with the books start but none of them stay that way.
