midwest food: look. food in the american midwest does not have a lot going for it, especially because i'm not particularly a potato enjoyer and many of the casseroles and such are potato-based. however! a friend of mine introduced me to a kind of cookie i hadn't had before, called kolaches. they're a sweet shortbread-like dough wrapped around a small amount of fruit jam. i was already a jam tart enjoyer, but kolaches have a better-tasting sweeter "pastry" with a better jam-to-pastry ratio. also, using cornflakes as a topping on casseroles to give a crunchy top is in my opinion FAR superior to crisping cheese (i hate crispy cheese). Lucy's mom makes the best chicken noodle soup i have literally ever had. i'm trying to think of other foods i like here. i hadn't really seen oatmeal chocolate chip cookies before i moved here? they're not my favorite but they're a nice texture alternative to regular chocolate chip cookies. oh! there's a large polish immigrant (and descendant) population here, so grocery stores seasonally sell paczki, which i'd never seen before. i love a custard donut, and they make a really nice lemon curd filling, which i also love. there's good food here! they just don't know seasoning.
