I'd never clicked on an Alex Meyers video in my life despite youtube recommending him a lot because his dumb little character gawking at everything didn't exactly give the impression of a thoughtful critic. From that impression I wouldn't trust him to tackle a movie like Obsession but I honestly couldn't have predicted how bad it'd be.
Jokey critiques really don't mesh well with serious subject matter. Why are you insinuating the rape victim is a crazy person for ... having a crystal necklace? wanting to be a writer? being portrayed by an actress who's latina? Weird misogynistic and racist jokes in the best of circumstances but when talking about a character who is being sexually abused it's a whole other level.
And he keeps bringing up goddamn Disney Channel movies to prove that Bear isn't that bad which really highlights that he's out of his depth here. But the thing is, kids movies with a comparable main gimmick are invariably about how doing that to a person is wrong. It's just a softer and more forgivable version of it because it's for, you know, kids? Bear is not morally equivalent to Zendaya's character in Zapped because she's a teen who wants her brothers to fart less and he's an adult who sexually abuses a woman.
Kids' movies generally use the main character as an audience insert, so the kids get to learn a lesson along with a character they relate to. In that sense, Alex Meyers might be less mature than a child. He looked at a character he relates to doing horrible things, and instead of doing some self examination, he chose to try and explain why it actually wasn't that bad.
