Torn Apart Evaluation- Drama
Drama Evaluation
Our task was to create a 3-5 minute shot film, with the genre being drama. Our group had two ideas; one about a break up of a boy's perspective with a twist. The other one was a camping trip and a serial killer is loose. We decided to go for the former idea, as we can make it more interesting and effective to the genre. In this task we had to use new equipment, like a Sniper Rig; which helps steady the camera free hand. This was a challenge in itself as I had never used one until now, but after training with a Sniper Rig it was very easy to use.
For pre production, we split the work out evenly between the five of us, so it will get done quickly and stay fair. We gave the easy pre production work to people who struggle with such work, but they at least still have something to do. As some people weren't in college, it was key that we have communication for our group to keep them informed of the progress. I wrote the list of who is doing what pre production on my Tumblr so no one gets confused or lost.
When filming the drama, we only had one day to film it all, due to the actors being busy. This was a struggle because it was rushed, and a lack of care was shown in some shots. Another problem was two of our group members weren't able to arrive to the filming, so there was only three of us at that day. The location where we were filming was far from the college and we had no car getting there, so we had to carry the equipment on the bus. This was a risk of breaking or loosing equipment; yet  we were very careful and all equipment came back safely. When filming, our first mistake was the microphone case being in shot, but it wasn't that noticeable. When shooting the party scene we covered one of the flow lights with a pink cloth to make the lighting pink to make the scene look more convincing. I found that this was successful as it helped the audience understand that it was a party. The final scene filmed had light exposure problems, but we fixed that problem by putting that part in black and white. This fixed the problem and also made the short film more emotional as it was in a bleak atmosphere.
When editing, only one person worked on the edit. This was a bad idea because there were mistakes on the edit, like the colour correcting and audio issues. However, only one person was working on the edit because the rest of the group were either ill or didn't bring the effort of arriving.
Overall I think the short film project could of been better, as there was a lack of communication in the group, and we had some problems with filming and editing. The outcome of the edit was okay, all shots were in focus and a continuity of the story was easy to understand. Some shots were boring, and the audio had problems. If I had the chance to do this project again, I would make sure the filming was spaced out so we can take care of every shot and not rush, I would also have more people help edit the main piece. Â

Treatment Proposal For Drama Project
Programme Title: Â Torn Apart
Duration: 3 minutes
Audience: Teenagers and young adults
Format: HD
Resume: ⢠ Follows the path of a guy who has had his girlfriend taken away from him. his will also include pictures and video memories of them two having fun and being lively. ⢠ He is all alone dealing with her depart and tries to go out with his friends to help get his mind off of the greiving. All along this will lead the audience into believing that it is a break up from a guys perspective but its not, it is the path in which the main guy is taking to grieving and deal with the struggles of loosing his girlfriend to death. ⢠ One day he is walking down the street with his friends and he thinks he has seen his girlifriend but it is in actual fact someone who looks like her. The closing scene is the main guy standing infront of a grave with a rose and then pans up to the sky to suggest that it wasnt a break up, it was his girlfriend that had died. Â
Suggested Elements: ⢠Using a track to pan into him in centre frame and cuts off other people in the room which connotes that he is all alone dealing with this since his girlfriend was a big part of his life. ⢠Video memories to show how happy they were together and how much of his life has been taken away from him. ⢠Continusally checking his phone to see if she is going to reply as it is force of habbit. This also shows another aspect of the main guy not being able to deal with the depart of his girlfriend. ⢠Using the song Wait by M83 as the closing scene. I thought this as it fits in perfectly with the scene and will have an emotional affect on the audience.

Drama Idea
For our drama project our story follows the path of a guy who has lost his girlfriend.
I came up with this idea as people always think about the impact of a girl through a break up but nobody thinks about how it affects the guy in the relationship.
We will lead the audience into thinking that the story is how he has broken up with his girlfriend but in actual fact, the closing scene is the main guy standing into of a grave, which is his girlfriendâs grave.

Interview technique essay
Producing an Interview.
Finding the best location:
When finding a good location to film an interview, it must be suitable to the topic for example if you are interviewing a doctor then a good location would be a hospital. This helps the viewers understand more about what this interview is going to be about. The most important thing to look out for, picking a good location is if you have permission to film there. So asking the owner of the building is the best way to know if you can film at that location. When choosing a location, make sure the environment in adaptable for your needs, for example enough plug sockets for lighting and enough room to move around and not cramped, the interviewee must have room behind them so it is easier for the crew to walk around . If helped, make sure that the location has not got an echo, so the audio of the interviewee is nice and professional.
Background:
Make sure that the background is interesting to look at and not a plain wall, otherwise it will make the whole interview boring and can ruin the whole video. If you are going to shoot with a white wall as your background, then try to put some posters or pictures relatable to the subject. If none is available, shoot it at a corner so it gives an angle to make it more 3D. Make sure there isnât any movement in the background, as that could be distraction for the viewers eye. If this canât be avoided, then have a depth of the interviewee and blur out the background to make it less distracting.
Framing and staging interview:
To make it a good interview, you have to make sure that the interviewee itself is comfortable as they could be, you can achieve this by making them not feel intimidating and be relaxed in yourself. Make sure that the interviewee is in a still chair so they donât move or rock as it can ruin the depth of field, or the shot all together. When positioning the camera make sure the interviewee has looking space, so it makes it more clearer to the viewers. The interviewer should sit close to the camera as possible, so the interviewee will apply rule of thirds and looking space. Â A two camera set up, can help you edit, as well as to make the interview more interesting as it is not only one looking space. If you do a two camera set up, then make sure both cameras are on the same settings, because if it is not it can mess up the whole interview. If a loud sound, can be heard by the microphone, then ask the interviewee if they can answer the same question again, so you can get answer you were looking for without interference of other sounds.
Cutaways and Cover shots:
Take as many cutaways and covers shots as possible, as theyâre very handy whilst editing. Cover shots can cover mistakes in an interview such as ums and pauses . Make sure the cover shots and cutaways are related to the subject in which your documentary is about. Having a range of types of shots of cover shots can make the documentary more entertaining, because if you have loads of close ups and no long shots it can get boring.
Questions:
When choosing the questions, list as many questions related to the subject; and only choose ones which are important to ask. After you have done that, set the questions in chronological order so it can be more easier to edit and make it less confusing for the interviewee. Avoid questions that start with; âareâ, 'didâ and 'wasâ; as this will lead to yes and no answers which you want to avoid as it doesnât give any information for the viewers. Ask questions that start with; 'whereâ, 'whatâ and 'howâ; as this will give you more information from the answer. Make sure the interviewee repeats the question so itâs easier to edit.
If there are any technical problems you can see during the interview, then donât be afraid to say it; so yourself or a crew member can fix it and get the correct footage for your interview.
After all the questions are answered, ask the interviewee if they have anything else they want to say. This can give the chance of the interviewee to say whatever they want about the topic, which can be interesting to add to your documentary.
Before calling it a wrap, check on all of the footage you have recorded and make sure you are satisfied with it, so there is no need to book another day, and check if the audio sounds clear. Check that you have covered everything and got the right cover shots. It is important that the interviewee has signed a release form to show he/she is happy for the interview to be shown, and make sure to thank them out of gratitude.
For our documentary, we shot 4 interviews overall, we followed the structure and knowing the location of two interviews helped us set up quicker and made it safe for the crew.
The first Interview we shot was at a kickboxing centre where Hayley trains, and we interviewed two of her coaches. This was a successful interview shot as the framing was correct and the background was related to the topic of kickboxing. The issue we had only on this particular interview was that it had an echo because the room was big, but it wasnât a major issue.
The second interview was  Hayley Ward, which was filmed at her house. To make the background more interesting we added some of her boxing trophies; these are fitting enough for the topic at hand. The framing was good but there was noise in the back ground, to fix the problem we used a programme called premier pro to soften the back ground noise.
The next interview was with Alan Ward (Hayleyâs dad), which was also filmed at her house. We had a slight problem with framing this interview, the tripod was tilted and it was only when we were transcoding it that we noticed the problem. We fixed the problem by straightening it out in after effects, but you can still see it is tilted by a tiny amount. The background and audio were successful.
The last interview was with Hayleyâs boxing coach, Len. We filmed this at the boxing gym she trains in, which made it relatable to the topic; as in the background of Len there was the boxing ring and posters. We found this was the most successful interview as we didnât have any problems with it.
Overall I find all our interviews a success and we overcame problems we had with some of them. In the future I will check back the footage at the location to see if there is a major or minor problem which we could fix then and there.
Factual Production Essay
The documentary I will be talking about is called Supersize Me. This award winning film is about a man called Morgan Spurlock who goes on a 30 day diet of just meals from McDonald's; he had the help of doctors, dieticians and physiotherapists to show the progress of this journey.  It also talks about how people are gaining more weight everyday due to fast  food restaurants. Morgan was 185lbs and at the final weigh in, he was 210lbs. This documentary had to overcome minor  and serious problems all throughout, and showed techniques found in this medium to overcome these problems. Â
This documentary is very factual, but also tells a story of Morgan and his opinions. These facts show a serious problem and can even scare and prevent the audience from eating fast food, and this also informs the audience the problems the world will have to overcome in the future. Some shots in this documentary can be very shocking which makes it more entertaining to watch. For example, when they show the size differences of McDonalds' chips or their soft drink cups in the USA. Another thing they use in this documentary which I find very effective is that they depict famous art work such as 'The Last Supper', by Leonardo Da Vinci, and change the painted figures to fast food icons. This creates more of an understanding for the audience on how serious the problem is, using this as an analogy on how certain fast food brands can be as popular as famous art or popular religions.
One scene which I remember from this documentary is when Morgan shows a series of photos to young children and they have to identify who they are. All children were correct when a picture of Ronald McDonald was shown to them, but none of the children knew Jesus when a depiction of him was shown. This sends a clear message that fast food restaurants are leering children in effectively, whether it is through television or a mascot.
The most important problem they have to convey is the health risk. Gaining a lot of  weight in a small time can cause major problems to the body; it can also increase the risk to long term health problems, like diabetes and heart conditions. Morgan had to be fully prepared and aware of these risks. During the film, Morgan complains about pressure on his chest and being depressed. By the third weigh in, the doctors were concerned of how much weight he was gaining and how much risk he was putting himself in. The doctors suggest for him to quit, as he doubled the risk of heart failure and his cholesterol was high. The doctors say his blood quality won't revert back to normal in a long time.
Another problem they had to overcome is consent; they need consent from people they wish to film, and consent from the owners of the locations where they want to film. A part of the film is when they include children and ask the same children questions. They need consent from the parents and them supervising for health and safety reasons. Â During this film they have shot in various McDonalds branches, which all require permission; due to legal reasons such as a risk of the film makers being sued if the owner finds shooting and disagrees to the use.
This documentary talks about problems McDonalds has overcome throughout the years such as lawsuits. Either from people who say it is too unhealthy, and that people have become overweight because of the restaurant's products. Another problem McDonalds has overcome, which is included in the documentary, is being demanded to have a healthier option available. McDonalds has started selling salads, however their salads still include more calories than some foods on the menu.
With the interviews alone, the documentary will be too short. They cannot afford to make the documentary short, as they may not capture the audience's attention with interviews alone, so they use archive footage in between. Archive footage is a great technicality to use to make a successful documentary, they used relatable footage which is factual and sometimes entertaining.
The cutaways and cover shots shown throughout the documentary are; informative, entertaining, interesting, and not boring. If they did not have cutaways and cover shots in this documentary, then the audience will be bored and confused. This is also another way to make it longer and maintain information and show a message. One cutaway involves shots of overweight people chest down, this shows how big people are getting and how the USA is changing. This issue is very minor, and almost all projects in this medium solves it through cutaways and cover shots, yet the technique used is still important in order to have the documentary be successful, informative, and interesting.
Making a profit in this documentary was not an issue, as the budget was $65,000; they made $22 million dollars at box office which made over ÂŁ21 million in profits. This shows that this documentary was a success overall, especially with such a comparatively small budget to start with.
In conclusion, this documentary was a great success to the audience and is even shown in schools now as a educational video. I feel the problems, despite having their origins, had been easy to overcome, and used the correct footage to make SuperSize Me a successful film.
