Dream stayed exactly where she was when Sarah cried into her shoulder, not flinching, not pulling away, only shifting enough to make it easier for her to lean there. One arm wrapped around Sarahâs back, her hand rubbing slow, steady circles between her shoulders while the other remained warm against her thigh. There was no judgment in Dreamâs face, only a softness that made space for every messy feeling in the room. When Sarah thanked her, Dreamâs expression tightened for a second with emotion before she shook her head lightly. âYou never have to thank me for being here,â she said quietly. âIâm here because I want to be.â She accepted the hug instantly, folding Sarah close and holding her with surprising gentleness, chin brushing briefly against the top of her head. When Sarah pulled back to introduce them, Dream glanced to Lennon and offered a small nod, calm and sincere. âNice to meet you, Lennon,â she said softly. Then Sarah made her joke, and Dreamâs brows lifted as she turned back toward her. Without missing a beat, she reached up and brushed a tear-damp strand of hair back from Sarahâs face. âFirst of all,â she murmured, voice warm but firm, âyouâre not going to talk about yourself like that right now.â Her thumb lingered near Sarahâs cheek for a second before she let her hand fall. âNo,â she said softly, firmly. âItâs not awkward. Itâs just the circumstances we met under.â She gave Sarahâs thigh a reassuring squeeze. âIf anything, Iâm glad Iâm here. Even if itâs messys.â She shifted closer on the couch, shoulder pressing into Sarahâs. âSo no, not awkward. Just real." Dream gave a small glance toward Lennon before looking back at Sarah, then let out a quiet breath like she may as well be honest while everything else was already out in the open. âI did sleep with your sister, and Iâm not gonna pretend it was some whirlwind romance.â Her tone stayed light, but there was no cruelty in it, just blunt honesty. âIt was a one-night thing.â She lifted one shoulder in a small shrug before adding, âBut we got back into contact not too long ago.â Dreamâs hand slid reassuringly over Sarahâs thigh again, grounding and gentle. âSo if anyoneâs worried about weirdness, donât be. Weâre adults. We know what it was, and we know what it is now.â She glanced to Lennon, then back to Sarah. âRight now what matters is you, Sarah. The pasts the past."
even though dream had told her over and over again not to speak to herself that way, sarah couldn't stop. right now, she felt like a walking mistake, someone people should stay away from if they wanted to be safe. she'd been neglecting herself on purpose, sabotaging everything because, in her mind, she deserved it. if anything, she thought she deserved even harsher words than the ones she was already throwing at herself. she couldn't break free from that spiral. it was impossible. embarrassment and fear tangled together so tightly inside her that she could barely tell them apart. when she heard dream casually tell lennon that they'd had a one-night thing, sarah let out a shaky sigh. her eyes squeezed shut, and she covered her face with both hands. she didn't even react when dream rested a hand on her thigh. part of her thought it would've been easier if dream had just called her a mess, slapped her for everything she'd done, and walked away. somehow, that would've made more sense than the patience she kept showing her. why was she still here? why was she being so understanding? another shaky breath escaped her as she lowered her hands, looking at dream for a brief moment before turning to her sister. âif you say so,â she murmured. she stood and walked a few steps away, staying in the room but needing the distance, the walls suddenly feeling as though they were closing in around her. âi'm fucking terrified,â she admitted, her voice cracking. âif i can't even take care of myself, how the hell am i supposed to take care of a kid?â she laughed bitterly, shaking her head. âand i know what you're going to say. one step at a time. but it's fucking hard to stay calm when i'm about to have a baby, go through a pregnancy, and...â she swallowed hard. âhonestly, anyone would be stupid to stay close to a walking time bomb like me.â she shook her head again, faster this time, trying to outrun the thoughts crowding her mind. âi just... fuck.â her fingers buried themselves in her hair as panic tightened around her chest. âi don't want to think anymore. i can't.â her breathing hitched. âplease... get me out of here.â
