Listen, this need for Scylla not to be the one who killed all those people and the hate Sarah Alder gets from the fandom…
As someone who’s favourite character from Once Upon A Time was Regina Mills (who at her worst was worse than both of them from what I remember) I really can’t relate lmao
I don’t think it’s really that much of a need. Some people feel uncomfortable with mass murder and don’t want this for Scylla but plenty of us want to explore the implications of this
As for Alder I think the reasons are two part. First it’s the fact that until the last episode we didn’t really get much of a sympathetic pov from her. With Scylla a LOT of fans were won over in episode 5 when she chose Raelle but we never really had that moment with Alder. And the second is that she is the one with power. It’s rally hard to have sympathy for people with power especially when they use to create a brutal oppressive system like. She is a regular in season 2 so I am guessing the attitude towards her will be different once we explore her more
And indeed thank god that we have far far better writers then the trash fire that was OUAT
To some extent, I understand what you’re trying to say. But this is the only show where I love every main character and so it is … frustrating. I’m not talking about whether a character is sympathetic or not since I’ve seen people try to find excuses for Scylla prior to episode 5.
I say need because I’ve seen so many fans say things like “how do we know..” “well actually it could be someone else…” whenever people who don’t like Scylla would bring up the first scene. I personally do like her, as she does give off young Regina Mills vibes, but at no point did I feel the need to reply to people who don’t like her because of her mass murder with “oh but how do you know”. If it makes you so uncomfortable, why is it okay to try and find ways around it when it’s Scylla, but not when it’s Alder? My only criticism of her came from the way they wrote her relationship with Raelle at the beginning. That never changed my love of her, however I will admit I stray away from a lot of Scylla fans who I don’t already know purely because the hypocritical hatred of Alder makes me sad.
And to say Alder has not been shown in a sympathetic light prior to episode 10 is ignoring the discriminatory behaviour President Wade exhibits as early as episode 2, as well as an insult to Lyne’s acting ability as she has on multiple occasions shown Alder feeling hurt. Alder is a person in power within the military but outside of it? The military is not like the ones in the real world. It’s is an entire race who’ve been oppressed and hunted, Fort Salem is a safe space (I use that term loosely, the fact that witches are forced into it is another issue altogether), we see Witchfather speaking to Alder about one of his men being stopped by an officer for no reason during episode 7.
When President Wade is talking to Alder she is directly talking to someone who built the country. Someone who originally was forced into the Salem accord at a young age, we know this in episode 3. Which essentially means she is only alive because she is needed for the army, that is the purpose of her being alive and 300+ years is a long ass time to live essentially just to serve the country you were persecuted in.
Alder very clearly has trauma, and a lot of her decisions are made because of it. But since she is centuries old it never seemed to occur to anyone take that into consideration. If you do not deal with your trauma, it does not matter how old you are, it will still cause you to to behave in ways that are irrational. These are all things that could be easily thought of prior to episode 10, hell even prior to episode 5.
I do not have anything against people try and find away around Scylla’s behaviour, but I do think bitching about Alder is very much hypocritical.
