Women in water recur in Goldin’s photographs, from her earliest to her most recent work. Goldin did not consciously choose this as a theme to begin with. She has always been and still is drawn to water, as can be seen in her later landscape and portrait work. It can be read as evocative of the womb or sleep, or birth and death. This image of a friend and roommate exhibits the extreme androgyny which is typical of her work. - Guido Costa
