The first time Jean and Sasha have been classmates was when they were in their first year in high school. At first, Jean had been cynical about his class, wanting to be part of the top ten graduates of their class so that he could proceed to Military Police. However, he gradually became comfortable with his class on the first day, especially with the likes of Mikasa Ackerman who was a beauty.
On the other hand, Sasha had been quite eager to get to high school and immediately graduate and go to college (wherever was fine, but she was hoping she could go to Military Police College and live a good life afterwards), just so that she could be independent from her father.
Their class advisor was the former principal, Keith Shadis. And it just had to happen that in their first day of class, Sasha had been so hungry (she skipped breakfast since she was rushing for the first day) and that she couldn’t take not eating her lunch in front of Shadis. And because Sasha ate like a hog and couldn’t hide it from Shadis, she had to be scolded in front of everybody and she was immediately sentenced to detention during the whole lunch break.
The others had tried to hold their laughter in, but they knew they would have a hard time. Good thing, Shadis had exited the room since other teachers had requested for his assistance. Everybody broke into laughter and when Shadis had returned, he immediately asked everybody what had occurred.
Fortunately (for the others and unfortunately for Sasha), Mikasa had placed the blame on Sasha by citing that she had farted quite strong.
Jean actually wanted to laugh right there and then, but he knew that Sasha’s (reluctant) sacrifice would go to waste. Maybe, it wasn’t bad that they were classmates that year.
The second time that they had been classmates in high school was in second year. Their tracks after college was quite similar and so, it was not a wonder that they had been classmates.
It was in that year when they had changed teachers. They had Kitts Verman as their moderator for that year.
It was, obviously, bothersome, especially since Verman often bullied weak-looking students andEren Yeager. It was pretty obvious that Eren wasn’t weak, but Verman had a very big prejudice against Eren Yeager (others said it was because Verman had liked Eren’s mother in the past, but was rejected; while others pointed out that it was because Eren was part of the Titan clan, even if Eren was already estranged from that yakuza clan.)
And while Jean didn’t like Eren quite a lot, especially since Mikasa-chan seemed to be in a budding relationship with Yeager, but Jean didn’t like how Verman was ostracising his rival for Mikasa’s affections.
Sasha, on the other hand, was quite oblivious to what was happening in front of her. She just knew that Verman loved to bully whoever looked weak, but that didn’t make Sasha cower in fear. She did whatever she could do (even striking down members of the Titan clan who bullied Mina and saving Samuel from falling down the rooftop). And then, she had to nearly get bullied and hurt by members of the Titan clan when Mikasa arrives. She thanks Mikasa for helping her out and becomes eternally grateful to Mikasa.
Then, Dot Pixis realises that Verman had been bullying his students that Verman was immediately replaced by Dot Pixis, himself. Dot Pixis wasn’t bad, temporarily sealing the problem they had with members of the Titan clan with the help of Eren.
However, Marco had to die; members of the Titan clan, they said. And maybe, Jean was partially thankful that Sasha had been there since she cried louder than him, making Jean realise that Marco was indeed a good man and friend to everybody.
The third time Jean and Sasha had been classmates in high school was their final year. They had been through a lot of hardships in the past, but they had successfully carried through it.
It was odd since they had chosen to go to the Survey Corps College, instead of the Military Police College. And while it didn’t mean that Survey Corps College was meagre in quality compared to Military Police College, but going to Survey Corps College entitled them to doing more than what they had been taught in their high school.
Sasha could only imagine the taunt that she would have to face for choosing that said college over the Military Police College, especially when she was very eligible for Military Police College, but she knew that there had to be a reason on why her instinct chose the Survey Corps College over Military Police College.
On the other hand, Jean had chosen the Survey Corps College after Marco’s shocking death. He could not fathom how Marco could die that easily and so, Jean chose to continue living Marco’s dream.
And while everything was going easy between them, Sasha had to secretly sob during Marco’s anniversary in the place where Jean would drown himself in sorrow with thoughts of ‘what-ifs’.
“Marco, I’m choosing the Survey Corps College. Isn’t it weird for me, Potato Girl, Sasha Blouse, to choose Survey Corps College? But, I guess, here I am.” Sasha murmured as she glanced at the sky.
Jean scratched his head and cleared his throat, making Sasha turn back to where Jean was. Sasha wiped her tears for a moment and turn back to Jean with a smile.
“Halo, Jean!” Sasha grinned, her German accent seeping in. She was, after all, half-German.
“I didn’t know potatoes could speak German,” Jean decided to tease her, hoping that she wouldn’t get embarrassed.
“Oh, shut up,” Sasha hit him lightly on his arm, but he had grabbed both of her hands.
“Well, you can’t exactly go against me, Potato Girl. I’m holding both of your hands,” Jean smirked.
Sasha frowned and instantly thought of something. She grinned inwardly and lessened the space between their faces, making Jean blush and close his eyes for what he thought was going to happen.
But, of course, Jean was wrong.
Sasha had given Jean Kirstein a big headbutt. A big one. Jean immediately cried out in pain, while Sasha headed out of the rooftop area.
Why the hell did Jean have to think that Sasha was going to kiss him for once? He blushed inwardly as he nursed the big lump on his face. Just because Sasha was gradually becoming more feminine nowadays didn’t mean that Jean should anticipate getting a kiss from a potato girl!
The few weeks later, Jean couldn’t look Sasha straight in the eye. And maybe that was the moment when Jean wished that he wasn’t classmates with Sasha in that year.
