âIâm okay,â Jessica replied, although she did let out a groan as she walked. âItâs not that bad, it only grazed me. I can patch it up easily. Itâs not the worst Iâve had.â It was difficult to say whether the worst injury sheâd ever had was from fighting the Super Mutants in the Jefferson Memorial, from the Radiation Poisoning sheâd received when switching on the Purifier, the time a Deathclaw chased her off a short cliff, or way back in the Vault, when a sixteen year old Jessica had gotten the shit beaten out of her by Butch and the rest of the Tunnel Snakes. The memory of that made her wince again, but not because of the injuries theyâd given her. Because she remembered how her father had fixed her up, how furious and terrified heâd been when Officer Gomez had carried her into the Infirmary, how heâd promised heâd always be there to fix her.
Expect he wasnât there anymore. It might have been ten years ago, but it never stopped hurting.
âDonât worry about me, I can look after myself.â
And there it was, the number one lie that everyone told. âIâm Okay, Iâm fine, Donât worry about me, Itâs not bad I promise.â While in theory the bravado made one look âtoughâ to Bonnie it made her lips curl in a slight worrisome frown. She couldnât help but feel mildly responsible for that, even if it was a graze. The redhead stopped loading the rounds, copper coated slugs threaded between the gaps between her fingers. She stared at the other, curiously. Exactly who was this girl? She wasnât a common gun-for-hire, no she was something far different. Asking would be rude, brash and probably anger her further.
âLass, no shame in accepting help from a stranger, fully be willinâ. If ye want to limp around with yer leg all up in a bloody blumskit then be my guest. However, Iâll be round tilâ ye get patched up. And ye know thatâs non-negotiable.â She began loading rounds in again, the brass cases thudding against the steel-feed lips as the spring compressed further and further down into the magazine.
