I know we always talk about Zemo being rich as all heck and stuff, but have we considered how rich Doctor Laszlo Kreisler is???? I have and I'm going to share.
With inflation $1.00 (US currency) would be about $29.58 today, but I'm going to round up to $30.00 to make my life easier.
After digging I discovered the a private box like Laszlo's at the opera (depending on the season, and who was performing) averaged about $150 per show. That's about $4,500.00 in today's money.
Now dinner: In season 1, episode 3??? I think?? After the opera with John, Laszlo takes the gang to Delmonico's which really was a restaurant in New York. I managed to find a menu from 1899 which is a couple years after the first season of the Alienist is set, but it think it will do.
Laszlo has a private dinning room for the night, I cannot find out how much that would cost, but going by the price of food on the menu and the cost of a private room there today I'm going to put it at a conservative $15 for the reservation, that's $350.00 today.
The average formal dinner was 5 courses, and knowing Laszlo and his love of food that dinner definitely was 5 courses.
Going by the menu I'm going to average out the cost of a 5 course meal converted to today's currency to $265 (not including side dishes) At this meeting, Laszlo, Sara, John, Marcus and Lucius are present.
This is also not including the price of wine and drinks with the meal, those I couldn't find I price for at all.
Thus, Laszlo's little evening at the opera with John and then dinner with the crew cost about $6,170.00 in today's money. Just some casual spending no big deal.
It's also made very clear throughout the show that while both John and Sara are upper class, Laszlo is significantly wealthier.
And thus, I raise you: sugar daddy Laszlo.
