Today I learned that Van Halen have that rider in their contract about âa bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removedâ in order to know at a glance if the promoter read the entire contract. And the reason they do THAT is because they once had a stage collapse because a promoter hadnât read the proper way to set up all the specific technical stuff.
So if the band goes in the dressing room or catering and sees brown M&Ms, they know they have to double-check the stage setup for safety.
I heard about this on Freakonomics Radio. Turns out the bit about no brown M&Ms is HUGE, in BIG font, bold, underlined and quotated like theyâre on the Group W Bench.
The band was all, âWe have fifty-pound lights hanging over our heads and fire being shot out of cannons. We had to know whether they read our safety regs so we didnât flamebroil any roadies.â
interesting how this has become a meme in the music industry about divas. iâve always heard jokes that amount to âthis stuck up celebrity hates the green gummy bears!! theyâre refusing to perform just for that???â and its reading stuff like this that i realise how that joke might have come about. people get grumpy that the band refuses to play but cant admit its because THEYâRE incompetent, so they make it all about the M&Ms. another example of artists using a creative method to ensure they have a perfectly reasonable request fulfilled that is then bastardised by lazy people who wanna make money off them.Â
âŠthis is like the music industry version of hearing the truth behind the McDonalds hot coffee lawsuit
It is exactly that! Thatâs an excellent observation @thesylverlining.
no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark you only run for the border when you see the whole city running as well your neighbors running faster than you breath bloody in their throats the boy you went to school with who kissed you dizzy behind the old tin factory is holding a gun bigger than his body you only leave home when home wonât let you stay. no one leaves home unless home chases you fire under feet hot blood in your belly itâs not something you ever thought of doing until the blade burnt threats into your neck and even then you carried the anthem under your breath only tearing up your passport in an airport toilet sobbing as each mouthful of paper made it clear that you wouldnât be going back. you have to understand, that no one puts their children in a boat unless the water is safer than the land no one burns their palms under trains beneath carriages no one spends days and nights in the stomach of a truck feeding on newspaper unless the miles traveled means something more than journey. no one crawls under fences no one wants to be beaten pitied  no one chooses refugee camps or strip searches where your body is left aching or prison, because prison is safer than a city of fire and one prison guard in the night is better than a truckload of men who look like your father no one could take it no one could stomach it no one skin would be tough enough the go home blacks refugees dirty immigrants asylum seekers sucking our country dry niggers with their hands out they smell strange savage messed up their country and now they want to mess ours up how do the words the dirty looks roll off your backs maybe because the blow is softer than a limb torn off  or the words are more tender than fourteen men between your legs or the insults are easier to swallow than rubble than bone than your child body in pieces. i want to go home, but home is the mouth of a shark home is the barrel of the gun and no one would leave home unless home chased you to the shore unless home told you to quicken your legs leave your clothes behind crawl through the desert wade through the oceans drown save be hungry beg forget pride your survival is more important  no one leaves home until home is a sweaty voice in your ear saying- leave, run away from me now i donât know what iâve become but i know that anywhere is safer than here

How to be a courteous hotel guest
Hello! My name is Claude and I am a Texas cosplayer who also workers as a hotel housekeeper. I havenât been working in housekeeping for very long but Iâve seen the impact of all sorts of guest and I have to say that Anime/Comic Con attendees are honestly some of the messiest guests and it puts a lot of strain on the housekeeping staff. Did you know we are warned in advance about you guys? I even have horror stories about con guest. This job is very physically demanding and weâre under a lot of pressure to meet our room cleaning times. Below are some tips about being a more helpful and respectful guest. These are only a suggestion. Not rules. Courtesy is a choice.
1.) Before leaving donât make the bed. We understand you mean well, but all sheets need to be washed and therefore the beds stripped. The best way to leave the bed? Place all the sheets on top of the bed and remove the pillowcases from the pillows. You can leave them bunched up, thatâs fine.
2.) Place all your trash into trash bags, tie it up, and leave the trash next to the door before leaving. That way we can just toss it in the trash cart and move on. Leave anything that we can vacuum. You can also leave the dirty towels next to the door before leaving.
3.) Please check all the drawers, cabinets, and closets to make sure you have all your things. Anything found will be placed into lost and found for 90 days. If youâve left something, just call the hotel and tell them what youâve lost and in what room.
4.) If you place a DND sign on your door we CANNOT ENTER at all. We mark it down and move on. If you later remove it and decide that you want service call the front desk and let them know because housekeeping usually end up leaving anywhere from 3pm-5pm.
5.) When housekeeping refreshes your room we make the bed, refill amenities, place fresh towels, take out trash, and do a quick wipedown. Donât want your bed made? Need extra amenities? Need extra trash bags? Etc? Let us know! We leave notepads and pens in every room and you can write down any instructions for us. Ex: âNo need to make the bed, just fresh towels and extra shampoos please.â âExtra trash bags and bath towels please, no more shampoos please.â
6.) Housekeeping cannot make the beds when you have personal belongings on the bed. Simple things like clothes and towels we move while making the bed then put back but anything else we DO NOT TOUCH. Laptops, jewels, suitcases, etc. Please keep this in mind if you want your bed made.
7.) Please do not leave your hair curlers and straighteners plugged in the bathroom. Guest always leave them connected usually next to the sink with water all over and itâs a safety hazard. Housekeeping will usually unplug them but I, personally, fear that maybe one day we wonât reach the room in time.
8.) If a hotel is Pet friendly, you still have to let the hotel know that you are bringing a furry friend along. We need to know what rooms need the pet treatment. What if the next guest is allergic and we werenât notified about the previous guest?
9.) Try and bring some supplies to clean up after your pet. Weâve had guest allow their pets to pee and poop on the carpets and it not only affects the housekeeping staff but maintenance staff as well.
10.) Most hotels are non-smoking and we ask that you please respect that. We are trained to find out if a guest has been smoking and when we catch it, you get a $250 charge. Donât risk it!! There are smoking areas that you can ask about.
11.) Have left over alcohol that you canât take with you when you leave? You donât have to throw it away. Itâs very common for guest to leave them as a tip for housekeeping staff.
12.) Yes! You can tip housekeeping! Itâs not required. But we constantly get tips and little notes to thank us for our work and we deeply appriciate it. (I actually have all my thank you notes!) How much you tip is up to you. Ive gotten anywhere from change to 25$.
13.) If youâre sick (like influenza, strep throat, cold, etc.) let the hotel staff know. That way we can notify the housekeepers to take extra precautions. (mask, gloves, etc) and provide a deeper clean. (I actually got Influenza B and ended up in the hospital from this one!)
14.) You donât have to leave your room if housekeeping comes by to refresh it. Â You can stay and tell us how to make your stay more comfortable. Plus, we appreciate the conversation.
15.) Please notify ANY of the hotel staff when you encounter a problem. (bedbugs, clogged toilet, broken lamps, etc) We are committed to make your stay as perfect as possible and can be reached at anytime for help.
16.) If you throw up or bleed (excessively) Â in the room please notify us as soon as possible and we can have maintenance come clean up. Please do not leave it for us to clean until after your stay. It causes stains that wonât come out and a deeply embedded smell in the room.
17.) Things you can ask for that guest donât usually know about (can vary by hotel. Some hotels require purchase.): cribs, extra blankets, shower caps, slippers, toothpaste, toothbrush, tampons, pads, razors.
Thatâs about all I can think of so far. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions about how to be a more courteous guest or anything about hotel service. Iâll be happy to help to the best of my ability. I cant wait to see you all at San Japan! :) Any questions? @etoile-ami-cosplay (Tumblr) @etoile_ami (instagram)Â
USEFUL INFORMATION!
We like to be as nice as possible to our hardest workers. But a lot of the time, we donât know how, this is a wonderful way we tend to communicate on just what things help and what donât help, because sometimes itâs counter intuitive to those of us who havenât worked in those positions! (For example, not to make the bed!)
This is just one of the many jobs that have a helpful check list in how to be the best customer for them, others include waiters/waitresses, librarians, and others. Keep an eye out if youâre interested!
And as the original poster said; courtesy is optional, not mandatory. But Iâd like to encourage it if you do remember! And donât feel bad if you donât remember, or donât feel like it. Memory is never perfect and you canât be faulted for how you feel; youâre doing great either way just for being interested and trying to understand.
School dress codes arenât only sexists, but thereâs also racist and islamophobic.
I (First Nations, Mohawk) used to have hair past my chest but my middle school forced me to cut my hair because âboys couldnât have hair past the tips of the earâ (Iâm not a boy either, but they assigned me âboyâ as a gender) but even when I begged them to let me keep my hair because of spiritual beliefs, they forced me to cut it. A classic move of the white school system against native children. I got a referral everyday for the 65 days I refused to cut my hair. I cried for two weeks after the principal took scissors to my hair. Iâm still growing it back.
My best friend (who is an aboriginal Egyptian) was once told to remove her hijab (also a gift I had given her) because âhats werenât allowedâ (a mixture of racism and islamophobia), she reluctantly took it off.
In middle school again, my friend Nemo ( First Nations, Navajo) was told she couldnât wear her traditional clothing on her 13 birthday, celebrating her reaching puberty. She was sent home and forced to spend her birthday alone while her parents worked.
Tomorrow is my 18th birthday, an important life event in Mohawk culture (becoming an adult) and I want to wear my traditional clothes to school, especially because Iâll have to celebrate all alone this year since I live far away from my nation. Even though my school doesnât have uniforms or a strict dress code, Iâm afraid theyâll tell me that my clothes or very light face paint are âdistractingâ and tell me to take off my traditional jewellery (headband, choker, bracelets) or wash off the face paint.
Iâm sure these are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to racism in the school dress code, and general school systems. White culture is enforced in everything from the dress code to the curriculum.
many european countries explicitly prohibit wearing headscarves like the hijab in schools, too
Oh my god. And I thought school dress codes were only sexist. This is a whole new level.
donât forget african-american students being sent home for or forbidden from wearing their natural hairstyles

Donât @ me but every one of those princesses except Cinderalla and Aurora look nice in 3D.
Iâm really annoyed with Disney being too intimidated to draw women who arenât big eyed and baby faced
One thing I miss from earlier Disney films was that the princesses had nicely proportioned facial features and designs. They were pretty similar but not to a point where you could copy and paste the designs. So itâs admittedly kind of jarring to see them go from this
to this
Tiana looks a âlil weird too actually
Okay, I gotta talk about this for a minute âcause like a lot of other people, Iâm disappointed as hell in Disneyâs lack of effort here.
So, 1. Sameface Syndrome
This is an issue many other people have pointed out already, so I wonât spend a lot of time on it. I just want to say that this issue comes up a lot in animated films where the character designers and animators donât put enough diversity in their faces to the point where they look relatively interchangeable. Itâs lazy and infuriatingly common. Every one of the princesses has huge doe eyes - even Moana and Mulan who are very obviously supposed to have different eye shapes.
2. Rapunzel, for some weird reason, basically has Elsaâs original features, and Elsa herself doesnât look like she should. Like, hereâs the original Rapunzel:
And hereâs how she looks in Wreck-it-Ralph 2:
I purposely placed this image of her next to an image of Elsa from Frozen to show the similarities in design. She looks more similar to the original Elsa than she does to her original self. Her face shape isnât even correct compared to her original Tangled design! (And I just noticed her eyes are a slightly different color and her eyebrows are lighterâŠ)
Now hereâs Elsa in Wreck-it-Ralph 2:
See what Iâm talking about? Something is really off about her design here, and that surprises me bc Elsa is basically Disneyâs go-to cash grab at the moment, so youâd think theyâd be more accurate with her. Thereâs a real problem here when Rapunzel looks more like Elsa than Elsa herself doesâŠ
3. They slimmed down Moana.
This is mostly evident in her arm thickness, which has been significantly diminished. The muscle curvature that is clearly visible in her original design is completely absent in her Wreck-it-Ralph version, and her hands and wrists look skinnier and more âdainty.â This is really insulting, esp considering how refreshing it was to watch Moana and see a well-rounded female protagonist who wasnât stick thin, only to have her slimmed down in her new design. :/
4. Tianaâs nose is egregiously inaccurate.
SO MANY THINGS are wrong with Tianaâs design (including whitewashing, which Iâll discuss in a sec), but the one that stuck out to me the most was how wrong they got her nose. As you can see in the images @unicornkin included above, Tianaâs nose shape in Wreck-it-Ralph 2 looks nothing like it did in The Princess and the Frog. When I first saw it, I immediately thought of RALPHâS nose. It honestly looks like a much smaller copy ân paste of his nose on her face:
Aside from different nostril placement, thatâs exactly what it isâŠ
5. BLATANT WHITEWASHING
Many people have already mentioned this as a main grievance with these new designs, and I have to agree that what theyâve done to the princesses of color in this film is not far from atrocious.
Moana and Mulanâs noses are smaller than they should be (Mulanâs is even pointedâŠ):
Tiana and Moanaâs lips are thinner than they should be (see above images provided by me and @unicornkin). Tianaâs are especially thin compared to how they were in PatF.
And, the most obvious change - skin tones have been lightened:
Like, THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. You can argue all you want about lighting and style choice for the film, but it is very clear that these skin tones are inaccurate.
The only thing, LITERALLY THE ONLY THING that Iâm satisfied with about these princess designs is the fact that Mulan is finally, finally not dressed up in one of her matchmaker outfits that Disney has been favoring forever. They finally let her wear the sensible warrior dress she wore at the end of the film, and they let her hair be short.
But thatâs it.
Itâs just really disheartening to see this kind of shit over and over again in the media. Itâs also lazy and incompetent of the character designers and animators to change so much about the princess designs, considering the original designs were right there for them to reference.
Some people may argue that this is because the Wreck-it-Ralph style is different from the styles of the movies that these princesses came from. And while that is a good point (and could explain the whole âRapunzel looks like a carbon copy of Elsa for some reason, while Elsa looks like a completely different characterâ issue I suppose), it certainly does not excuse the whitewashing going on here.
Iâm sure Wreck-it-Ralph 2 will be a great film, and I look forward to seeing it. Iâm not trying to criticize the film itself, but to point out where the animators failed in providing an accurate representation of the princesses of color.
Shame on Disney for allowing this.
oh my god two words in that just UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE
All hope is lost so quickly I canât stop laughing.

âOkay :(â
He went straight to Acceptance. He didnât even go through the five stages of grief. He just started at Acceptance.
I can translate for anyone wondering what heâs saying. The dialogue roughly goes something like
âHopefully the owner of the car behind me will next time consider if-oh shit. Okay.â
This is the first time anyone has led me to believe that wasnât his car. Or the production crewâs car. IâM SO RELIEVED.
