The flow of arms into Croatia had begun long before the start of open conflict in 1991, with smuggled Romanian and Bulgarian arms being intercepted into the region more than a year before hostilities by Yugoslavian authorities. Kalashnikov variants were not the only weapons to show up in the war, though, as the black market also opened the possibility for NATO arms to be put into the hands of the Bosnians and Croatians.

In these photos you can see a wide variety of weapons that wouldn’t exactly be considered prevalent in the Balkans.

In the first scene a Croatian wields a South African FAL with a folding stock. Many of these made their way to Croatia via arms shipments from South Africa, and a few were even intercepted by the Yugoslavians before they pulled out in 1992. The last two photos show Croatians with M16A2s, which were very rare to see, usually being held by those with wealth and rank, and hardly ever seen on the front.
