Loving this.....
Friday!!!Ā
Iāve worked out everythingās alright when youāve listened to this song.Ā
Bit of an update!
As my three regular readers of this blog know, writing regularly is not obviously my forte but I thought Ā I would attempt to put some words down whilst enjoying another hang over free weekend. In fact itās taken nearly a whole day to finish this paragraph having spent far too long being distracted by football, the news, going for a run, playing some guitar, eating bagels, listening to 6 Music and watching a bit of bargain hunt.
Itās obviously been a bit of a mental and depressing week what with the results from America. The only plus side to this ridiculousness is hopefully itāll bring about some good new music over the next four years. I was trying to explain this concept to a mate from the states the other day but iām not sure it was of much consolation- which it isnāt really but you have to hope!
I was in the studio a couple of weeks ago putting down 5 new tracks for a new electric EP. It felt brilliant to be making a right racket once again and iām genuinely looking forward to getting it out at some point in the spring of 2017. (A big thanks to Matt Gordon and Doc Collins for all their help and ideas)Ā Until relatively recently I was always prone to rushing out new music. I know I speak for a lot of mates who also put out music in that when we were 19/20/21/22 it always felt like you were competing with the next young band and that time was of the essence. That mindset stuck with me until relatively recently until I actually realised that age is irrelevant when it comes to making music. I think being in your late twenties/early thirties in a band now actually holds a bit more kudos than it did say 10 years ago (obviously I would take this stand point as iām approaching 29) but if you look at some of the bands that are doing well and producing great sounding records, they span a huge range of ages. Itās a good thing attitudes have changed because it takes the pressure off bands slightly in that they can commit both on honing their craft as well as and bringing in the money in which to pay the rent. Ā
The EP I put out in June was relatively well received. I wish I hadnāt put it out in the rush I did ( going against everything I said above), but I really wanted it to be heard around the time I played at Glastonbury, which was a really fun little gig. A big thanks again to The Rabbit Hole once again for having me on and looking after me so well. Also Iām hoping the guy who fell asleep in the hot tub for 7 hours recovered quickly. Iām hoping to be back at Glastonbury next year in some capacity, somewhere. Itās already seriously heating up trying to get slots so Iāll have to wait and see.Ā
I havenāt played as many shows as Iāve wanted to this autumn. I did a little set upstairs at Ronnie Scotts in September, and before this had played a set at The Bedford in Balham. I also supported Ethan Johns at The Bridge Inn in Topsham back in the summer. It was really interesting to have a good conversation with Ethan about how he goes about producing records. The man has produced so many albums which Iāve loved over the years that it was quite refreshing to hear how he tries to keep most records he produces organic as possible. Iāve taken on his ethos with the new recordings as I feel I have been prone to over producing my tracks in the past. I think everyone is guilty of doing it to some degree!
It doesnāt look like Christmash is on the cards this year which is a real shame. What with The Cavern being out of action after fire, Iāve been hard pressed to find another venue which is available for the usual date of December 22nd.
I must also say a big thank you to The Mocking Birds beys for being understanding about me leaving the live set up. I am very much going to stay involved with helping the lads but I felt it was time to concentrate 100% on my own stuff again for a while.
A few last words go to the people around me who are doing some great things. Firstly my sister who has recently got back from the States after completing a project photographing the last remnants of the blues scene in Mississippi as well as new talent which is emerging. To my Dad who has just finalised Ā a deal with Pelican Press who will published his first book in March 2017. To Tourists who recently released their new single Ā āDriveā which is a really brilliant track & toĀ Peacock Affect has signed to Universal Japan which is more than exciting.

DEBUT ALBUM 'FROM CAPLAN TO BELSIZE' OUT TODAY
Muncie Girls' debut album 'From Caplan to Belsize' is out today folks! It's great to see another band from Exeter gaining some decent nationwide exposure, and they well deserve it having bust their asses the last few years touring up, down and across the UK & Europe.

It's been a manic couple of weeks here in the smoke, as well as sessions with The Mocking Birds at PMC back in Devon, I've been co-writing with a very talented new musician at Wendy House Studios. It's all sounding potentially quite special. I've also been penning in dates to get my new solo EP done before the summer comes, where I'll be back playing at a certain farm at the end of June.Ā
Ā The point of today's post though is to help spread the word about the release of Muncie Girls' debut album 'From Caplan to Belsize'. It's great to see another band from Exeter gaining some decent nationwide exposure, and they well deserve it having bust their asses the last few years touring up, down and across the UK & Europe.Ā

i made this beat during christmas holidays started with this nice sample from Rubba - Way star. I wasnt sure what to do with it so invited Carmody round to work on it together... this is the outcome!!
Bloody lovely tune from this young London lad Tom Misch. Ā Smooth, Mellow, R&B inspired hip-hop beatageĀ
I had the pleasure of playing on the same bill with Eliza a years ago at The Garage in Islington. At the time I think she was still finding her real sound and direction (much like myself). But it seems she has found it now. This track is great, go checkĀ
'Evolution' will be the second single from The Mocking Birds. Release date TBA
Evolution from The Mocking Birds will be the next single from the band, who play The Silver Bullet, London, this Friday night. February 5thĀ
super cool
Proper vibing this tune from this Montreal duo.. got that late night summer feeling about it. Bring it on!Ā
ON THE 365TH DAY...
What a year, and how I have let myself down blog wise. In early January 2015, I made a promise to maintain it on a regular basis, of which I have completely and truly failed. Many reasons can be given, but reasonable and justifiable excuses are few and far between. So to all of my 3 blog readers, I apologise now.
January music wise was its usual dead self. No one is interested in going out to shows, and many musicians donāt enjoy gigging either. I got out and did a couple of impromptu open mics to maintain my playing, and confirmed my slot at Glastonbury, but the festival season felt many many moons away from West London during what felt a very cold, bleak and long haul to February; where very little happened either. In March however I was introduced to a very talented young lad in Rhyhan Holder of whom I wrote and recorded a tune with. Rhyhan is only 17 but is a real raw talent and like his label & management, Iām genuinely excited to be involved with him. There are some absolute belting tunes which will at some stage will be released on his debut album, although this will not be for a while.
In May The Mocking Birds recorded the video for āChoose Lifeā. We were lucky to be supported by Piaggio UK and Atom Retro for the video, and were even luckier to have my good pal Chris Watts spend a vast amount of time recording and editing the video, for which as a band we are eternally grateful. We had a great crew helping with the recording all weekend and the end product would be well worth the time and effort.
May also saw the loss of the biggest Blues stars of all, BB KING. Having met BB on one of the occasions when my Dad had the pleasure of interviewing him, it was particularly sad knowing he had passed. I saw him play a number of times, the last being at Glastonbury in 2011. The real highlight was though the show at Bournemouth around 2004, when he signed by guitar backstage before the gig- even though he contractually wasnāt allowed by Gibson to do so. He made a specific point of Ā signing the scratch plate, which I suppose legally was a more difficult thing to prevent. A massive, massive loss to the music world, as reflected with the tributes paid from across the music industry. A proper gentleman as well.Ā
In early June, The Mocking Birds met with a major label whose A&R were incredibly keen on āChoose Lifeā as a track. Whilst the meeting was very much only an introduction between the two parties, it was brilliant to be able to sit down with an Major label and play them some tracks. Meeting an UK A&R who was willing to give us half an hour of his time for us to play a few tunes to was a first for me. Only in America have I been given time by A&Rs to meet and play tracks to before- where the āwho you knowā thing matters a little less.
Glastonbury was bloody chaotic but a great laugh. I think the appearance on Worthy FM on the Wednesday afternoon was probably much Ā more beneficial than playing the two gigs in honesty. The Thursday afternoon gig was better than Sundayās, by which time even walking anywhere had become a chore let alone playing an hour set. Musical highlights of the weekend included Gaz Coombes, Wolf Alice, Caribou, Jamie XX & Ryan Adams. I have already confirmed to be back playing in 2016 at a venue in The Park so thereāll be more on this in the new year.
In the September I just missed out on a job at Warner Brothers Records which was gutting but Iām really hoping itāll be third time lucky next time another opportunity rears its head. Iāve always been keen to work within the business side of the industry as well as the songwriting/musician side, and there are many managers and producers I know of who have successfully worked on both sides simultaneously and made it work.
In October The Mocking Birds released āChoose Lifeā Ā in association with online retailer Atom Retro. We followed this up with a great show at The Silver Bullet later in the month. We played a few more shows before Christmas, notably selling out our hometown show at The Bike Shed as well as supporting The Computers at The Exeter Phoenix/ To everyone who has supported The Mocking Birds this year, a massive thank you. Weāre really hoping to push on in 2016. Our first London show is back at the Bullet on February 5th.
Finally a big thanks to all that made Christmash 2015 an absolute blast. Dan Schamroth, Witterquick, my band consisting of the brilliant Mat Gordon & Lucy Piper, Tom Crowther on the decks and The Cavern. Itās always brilliant to see some old faces from the past, and I hope we can continue over the coming years to make Christmash even more of a success.
I hope yāall have been having a great Christmas. It was brilliant to be back to Devon to catch up with my family and friends. Happy New Year. Ā

Currently blasting on 6 Music. Underated, so underated. Canāt believe I bought this in 2007 before my first Glastonbury. It changed the way i wrote songs, the sound of my music, the way I sung, everything.... The dark horse of my inspiration. Thank you Mumm-RaĀ
