THEIR STORY
Most people know Sam as a fun-loving, soft-spoken guy who always wears his heart on his sleeve. However, that’s just one side of his personality. While he has a heart of gold, he can also be forgetful. Sam describes his brain as having twenty tabs open and unable to find the one he needs. His mind is always racing, and he can’t switch it off. Sam didn’t feel comfortable in school. He found it hard to sit still and struggled to express his thoughts in writing. Nevertheless, he enjoyed classes that allowed him to be active and away from reading or writing. In high school, he joined the show choir and realized his passion for music and drawing. After being diagnosed with dyslexia, Sam received help in translating his thoughts into words, and his grades improved significantly.
Sam has fond memories of his childhood. He recalls playing board games, going to amusement parks, hanging out at his grandparents farm and spending quality time with his family. His father, Dwight, initially lost his job when Sam was in his early teens. Dwight eventually found work at a construction company in Philadelphia. This job required him to live in Philadelphia for a few years, only able to visit on weekends and holidays, which made Sam feel like he had to step up and kind of become an even more responsible older brother, making sure his younger siblings had a father figure type around the house when Dwight wasn’t there. To help his family make ends meet, Sam took on odd jobs, allowing his mother some relief from work. This sense of responsibility made Sam grow up much quicker than his peers, often leading him to forget to enjoy his teenage years.
Sam worked tirelessly to overcome his dyslexia and improve his grades. His efforts paid off when he earned a full scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York City. At Pratt, he honed his drawing skills and even developed a love for writing. This newfound passion led him to discover his future career in writing graphic novels. Although he enjoyed his time in the big city, Sam realized that at heart, he was a small-town guy. He missed his hometown of Ashford Valley, along with his family and old friends. Eventually, he decided to return to his roots and found an apartment in his hometown. He acquired a small store just off Main Street and turned it into a comic book store. While it may not be the busiest business in town, Sam enjoys the quiet times when he can work on his next graphic novel.
