Song of the Day: Sammy Davis Jr. - “Poor Little Extra Girl”
For as long as there has been fame and celebrity there have been people who have wanted it. The roads to California, Hollywood to be more specific, are paved with the dead and dying dreams of people who have made that trek in hopes to strike it big. Nowhere is this story told as effectively as Sammy Davis, Jr. does right here with “Poor Little Extra Girl.”
The song follows the story of an anonymous girl who went to California in hopes to be a movie star. Instead of the dream she envisioned she is faced with a reality that features more waiting. More disappointment and depression as she finds herself closer to the stars but just as far away as ever from fulfilling her dream.
This song hit me so hard that I had to remove it from the 24 minute “California Suite” track from the album of the same name. It’s such a poignant message that he even lightens up by reminding us that Rome wasn’t finished in a day. There’s a promise that if she keeps at it that her plans will bloom but can she hold out? It’s one of those questions. Maybe, maybe not. The chase for fame could leave you unhappy but if you stay just that extra day maybe it works out? Or maybe you’ll just be lingering for a decade to long. Who knows.
