MC felt a fresh bout of tears sting their eyes. “The longer I stay, the more danger I’m in,” they murmured.

“I’m afraid so. And as soon as he catches wind that you don’t trust him, he’ll have no reason not to turn on you and show his true colors.”

It was agony to imagine M insulting them, threatening them, even revealing himself only to reveal a terrible weapon in his hand. “Asra,” they said, “I– I can do it. All I need’s a weapon. I know where his bedroom is and I bet I can pick the lock on the door on my own.”

Asra nodded curtly. One of his hands rose from MC’s hair, gesturing in midair, conjuring in a matter of seconds a small violet-hilted dagger with a clean curved blade.

Asra didn’t know what the hell he was talking about. Of course from an outside perspective, the situation would look odd indeed, but MC understood the situation, and Asra didn’t. They hated talking back to Asra but he needed to understand. “That can’t be right,” they said coolly. “You’ve never even spoken to him. Besides, if he wanted me dead, why didn’t he just let the mercenary kill me that night back in the shop?”

“MC, why else would he be using a cloaking spell?”

“Well– I dunno, maybe he’s shy!”

“Here’s my resume.”

Lucio crept forward. He unsheathed his trusty dagger from his belt and ran a finger up the blade with loving care. This was just too easy. He tiptoed around to the head of the bed to examine his prey.

They were sleeping soundly, half-tangled in their sheets, lips parted just a bit. Their hair was messy and gnarled from slumber. And their throat, their delicate unscarred throat, was bared to the moonlight.

The mercenary cocked his head, watching their chest rise and fall. Of course, he didn’t normally care about his victim’s appearances, but this one seemed very– was innocent the word? Wholesome?

Lucio Morgasson tread over the rooftops of Vesuvia, silent and agile as a panther through the night. He kept his body low to the tile so as not to cast a shadow to anyone who might be watching. While he normally preferred to wear something flashy and striking, tonight he wore black tight to his skin from his collar to his boots. Lucio always liked to strike at night. Although he liked the fight some victims put up, for jobs where his mother was concerned, he preferred to get in and get out fast. 

His mother didn’t usually ask for his services. Morga did things herself whenever possible and it wasn’t like her to entrust her son with any valuable duties. But this job? This job required stealth. And Lucio, though she hated to admit it, was better than she was at being sneaky.

Lucio remembered in loving detail how uncomfortable she was asking for his services. “I need someone gone,” she had told him. “Someone who may threaten our tribe in the future.”

“Our tribe,” Lucio asked, picking at his fingernails, “or your rule, mother?”
