Things I have heard as an Azerbaijani hijab wearing Muslim.
Things that are kind of funny:
- âAzerbaijan, I thought that was next to Chinaâ đ
- âOh itâs so cool that youâre from Turkeyâ - really!?
- âAzerbaijan! The princesses of Easter Europeâ (yes someone actually said that to me)
- Girl in shop: âYou know this book is in English rightâ (aaahhhh!)
- âSo do you prefer Russia or Turkeyâ (neither, thatâs why I live in the UK)
- âYou look pretty white for an Azerbaijaniâ (despite the fact weâre all pretty much white)
- âOh thatâs cool, when did you convert?â (Cannot stress this enough, how much I hate hearing this, some of us are born white and Muslim! Go and visit Azerbaijan, Morocco or Uzbekistan and youâll see)
- âItâs cool youâre wearing the hijab to support the Muslims studentsâ (day after the mosque attacks in New Zealand, despite the fact that I wear it all the time).
- âSo do you like go outside without your hijab sometimes?â (At least he was just curious and not a complete idiot)
Things that arenât funny
- âCome on take it (hijab off), I bet your hair looks really coolâ
- âI like Azerbaijanis, youâre such conquerable Peopleâ (from a Muslim guy from Turkey)
- âBut here [in the USA] weâre a Christian nation, so you donât need to wear thatâ
- âI bet your hair is really pretty underneathâ
- âYou only wear that because men want you tooâ
- âTaking your hijab off is empoweringâ [at a womanâs march last year]
- âHow does it feel to be oppressed?â [Same womanâs march]
Some good things I have heard:
- âYour scarf is quite pretty, matches your shirtâ
- âI know you donât celebrate Christmas, but I got this for you anywayâ
- âIâm sorry about our president (American to me), youâre always welcome hereâ
- âOh sorry, itâs Ramadan isnât it, I can eat it laterâ (friend after realising she was eating in front of me during Ramadan).
