rlly the compelling thing about obi wan to me is he fulfills the gandalf/merlin role in the story when we first meet him. yet by empire glucas and co are already subverting that trope, by having obi wan give wise advice to luke on dagobah that is against luke’s strong moral compass. here obi wan presents what is one of the core questions of star wars: how far would you go to save the ones you love? and what does saving them even look like? obi wan is notably on the side of non-action in this instance. then ofc in rotj both jedi, including obi wan, are wrong about anakin. then we meet him in tpm and he’s a petulant 25-year-old man child who is the first jedi in we assume decades or even centuries to watch his master violently die at the hands of a sith lord. THEN he’s general number one in the clone wars advocating for the creation of a slave clone army to die on his behalf. THEN rots and him abandoning anakin. the high point of his hero’s journey is in a new hope when he sacrifices himself and then george lucas goes out of his way to show how flawed and unwilling obi wan was to really sacrifice or inconvenience himself in any way during life. he is the anti-merlin, the anti-gandalf. he is never a teacher or a mentor by choice. he is always willing to let beings he deems “lesser than” die for him. he values his own moral compass/code above anything else including the actual lives of the people around him. if that moral code is ever shaken he lashes out. god
