Do you ever get bored with whatever book/story you're writing? If so, do you have any advice for when that happens?
Yes. Personally, if I get bored with something Iām working on it means one of three things:
1. Iām burned out and need to take a break. After some time away from the story (a day, a week, or even a month), my interest will return.
2. Iām writing what I think I āshouldā write instead of what I actually want to write. In this case, I need to confront my fears around not pleasing other people, and change directions. This isnāt always drastic. Sometimes it means making only minor changes. Other times it means throwing the whole idea out the window. It just depends.
3. The story doesnāt have enough of a hook for me to keep me engaged in the long term. Personally, in order to finish a story there has to be something at its core that is more than a fleeting interest for me. It needs to be something that Iām absolutely obsessed with. Otherwise Iāll lose interest after a few weeks or months and wonāt finish it.
Lastly, I offer you this: There will be times you get tired of your story. Thatās okay, and it doesnāt necessarily mean youāre on the wrong track. At the same time, I hereby give you permission to write only what completely, endlessly fascinates youāeven if itās not mainstream, even if it breaks writing ārules,ā even if everyone but you hates it.
Hope this helps!
