A low, strained groan slipped past your lips as you stirred, your body protesting against the stiffness that had settled into your neck and shoulders. The desk beneath you was hard and unforgiving, far from comfortable, and your arm had gone numb from being used as a pillow. You shifted slightly, trying to ease the tension, your cheek dragging faintly against the surface as you searched for a better position.
A quiet snicker reached yours ears.
Before you could fully react, a large hand slipped into your hair, fingers brushing through it in a way that was far more playful than gentle. It wasn’t trying to soothe you—it was deliberately messing it up, lightly tugging and ruffling. You let out a soft, annoyed sound and turned your head away, but the hand followed, persistent. With a more audible whine, you shoved it away.
A warm chuckle answered immediately.
That was enough to pull you out of your half-sleep. You lifted your head, eyes opening with clear irritation, ready to glare at whoever had decided to ruin your peaceful sleep— well, not exactly peaceful, but still your sleep.
Instead, you were met with warm, sky-colored eyes.
Your childhood friend—Phainon. 𝚈𝚘𝚞𝚛 𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚘𝚗𝚕𝚢 𝚏𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍.
He was sitting right across from you, his elbow resting on the desk, his cheek propped against his hand as he watched you with quiet amusement. His other hand lingered near yours, as if he had only just pulled it back. For a second, your thoughts lagged behind the situation, still caught between sleep and awareness.
His desk had been dragged right up in front of yours, pressed directly against yours so neatly there wasn’t even a gap between them. You were certain it hadn’t been like that before you fell asleep, which meant he had done it while you were out.
Your expression shifted into a sharper glare, and right on cue, his smile widened, clearly pleased with your reaction.
You exhaled through your nose and pushed yourself upright, rolling your shoulders slightly to shake off the stiffness. A few quiet complaints slipped from you, half-muttered and unfocused, but he only responded with a soft hum, agreeing without understanding a single word, as if he didn’t mind your irritation in the slightest.
Clicking your tongue, you finally looked away from him and took in your surroundings.
The classroom had changed. The bright daylight you remembered had softened into a warm, golden glow that stretched across the room, settling over desks and pooling along the floor. Dust floated lazily in the light, and the usual noise—voices, movement, the scrape of chairs—was gone.
Every desk was empty. The students who had stayed behind to clean had disappeared.
Everyone was gone, except for you and him.
“…Where is everyone?” you mumbled, rubbing your eyes.
“They all went home,” Phainon replied simply.
“Already? Don’t people usually stick around a bit longer after cleaning?”
He gave a small shrug. “Yeah, but I told them I’d handle everything myself after you fell asleep,” he said, a hint of pride in his voice. “Sooo… they all left right away.”
There was a hint of satisfaction in his tone, and that alone made your brows draw together in disbelief now fully processing his words.
“What did I tell you about doing that?” you started. “You don’t have to do everything for people—and you could’ve at least woken me up to help! I know it was your turn to clean, sure, but still…”
For a brief moment, he seemed a little flustered. His gaze slipped away, and he started fidgeting lightly with his hands before mumbling more shyly, “It didn’t take that long… and you looked sooo peaceful. I didn’t really want to wake you.”
Your irritation didn’t disappear, but it softened enough that you didn’t push it further. You just let out a small huff in response.
“…It’s really late now,” you added after a moment, your gaze drifting toward the windows. The sun was already lowering in the sky, casting long shadows across the courtyard outside. “Do you know what time it is? And aren’t [𝚁𝙴𝙳𝙰𝙲𝚃𝙴𝙳] and [𝚁𝙴𝙳𝙰𝙲𝚃𝙴𝙳] supposed to be waiting for us at the club?”
Phainon stilled slightly at that. It was subtle—easy to miss—but something in his expression tightened just a fraction, his eyes settling on you in a way that felt just a bit too focused.
You blinked, and the moment passed as quickly as it happened.
He looked the same as before, leaning casually against his hand once more, his expression soft and almost amused.
“You know…” you started, but the rest of your sentence faltered. Your brows furrowed as you tried to recall the names you had just been thinking of. They had been there a second ago, clear enough to say out loud, and now—
You stayed quiet, trying to piece it together, but the more you tried remember, the more it slipped away. Something. Someone.
Phainon simply watched you, saying nothing at first, his gaze steady as you struggle in silence.
After a few seconds, he let out a small chuckle. “And what club are you even talking about? It's always been just you and me here. Whatever you were dreaming about, must’ve been pretty interesting..”
You sighed, the frustration settling in. A dream. It must’ve been a dream. But you couldn’t remember it at all anymore, which only made it more irritating.
“…Right,” you said, not sounding entirely convinced.
By the time you looked up again, he had already stood up. Your attention followed him as he leaned slightly toward the desk beside his and lifted a sheet of aluminum foil off a plate—
Revealing a pile of cupcakes underneath. They were decorated in an almost overly cute way, topped with thick swirls of bright pink frosting and small details that made them look almost too neat.
You didn’t remember seeing them earlier.
Phainon picked one up and took a bite without hesitation, not bothering with the crumbs falling onto his shirt. A bit of frosting stuck to his lips, and he licked it away absentmindedly, letting out a soft, satisfied hum.
“Oh, that’s so cute!" a giddy little laugh slipping out as you couldn’t stop smiling at the almost ridiculously pink cupcakes “Who made those? ”
He glanced at you, immediately putting on a mildly offended expression, even with half a cupcake still in his mouth. “First— rude of you to assume I couldn’t make these!”
You gave him a look, unimpressed, and he held it for a second before smiling slightly.
“And second— you were right, though. They’re from a friend,” he admitted after swallowing. “You should try one. They’re reallyyy good. It’s just a shame he had to left the school because of 𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚏𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛… he won’t be able to make me any more now, it was his last day here.”
“Awh, really? That’s too bad. I would’ve liked to meet one of your friends.”
“Hey—” he cut in, sounding lightly indignant, though there was something else underneath it. “My amazing company is not enough?”
You rolled your eyes, but a small smile still slipped through. “Oh, please. Don’t even start, you big baby.”
That only made him grin wider. He seemed oddly pleased by your reaction as he stepped closer and extended a hand toward you.
“Come on,” he said. “We should go. We’re already lucky no teacher found us still here..”
You looked at his hand for a brief moment before taking it, letting him pull you up even though you didn’t actually need the help.
“Well, maybe if someone hadn’t let me sleep for that long…”
“I told you, I didn’t have the heart to wake you!”
“What kind of stupid excuse is that?!”
You turned to grab your bag, which had been resting neatly against the back of your chair. But before you could sling it over your shoulder, Phainon had already picked it up for you.
He slung it over his shoulder with a bit more care than necessary—your bag, of course—before casually grabbing his own. Just seconds ago, the two had been pressed 𝚝𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛, side by side.
Unlike yours, he barely paid his any attention, letting it hang loosely from his hand as he gave it an absent-minded swing.
By the time you stepped out into the hallway, your voices echoed softly against the empty walls as you continued bickering, your footsteps the only other sound in the quiet building.
Back in the classroom, the cupcakes were left behind on the desk, forgotten, sitting in the fading sunlight. The warmth in the room lingered just enough for the frosting to begin softening, slowly losing its shape.
By the time night fell, it would melt.
By Monday, they’d probably be found like that—ruined and inedible, 𝚍𝚒𝚜𝚐𝚞𝚜𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐, only to be thrown away without much thought.
Still, it was a strange thing to leave behind.
Then again, maybe 𝚒𝚝 𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗’𝚝 𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛.
