Think for a second what throwing something away means. 

Where is away? Is it a landfill? A less privileged country? The ocean? Does it get burnt and emit Co2, contributing to already stressed oceans? 

Throwing plastic away doesn’t mean that it’s actually disappearing - it’s just going somewhere you can’t see it. Every single piece of plastic you’ve ever used still exists somewhere on this planet.
