Hey Megan! Can you please do 47 for Jasiper? That last work was amazing, by the way. (I live for domestic Jasiper)
47. âIâm only important when you need something from me.â
âSo you werenât going to tell me you got a new girlfriend?â
Jason should have seen this conversation coming. The second he posted the picture of him at the alumni dinner with Kate, he should have anticipated the questioning, the scrutiny, the anger.
With a sigh, he nervously drums his fingers against the table. âWeâre not dating, Pipes,â he says wearily. âSheâs just a friend.â
Piperâs quiet reply is, âBobby said you guys are dating. Itâs just really insulting and hurtful and honestly rude for me to find out through Bobby.â
Fuck. âBobby is wrong. I definitely would know if I was dating Kate.â Usually, Jason would shut his mouth, plead for forgiveness, but why should he ask for forgiveness? Why is he sorry? He has nothing to hide; Kate isnât his girlfriend. Sure, theyâve gone on dates, but he doesnât owe Piper an explanation. She broke up with him long ago. So instead of staying silent, he asks, âWhy does it matter to you, anyway? Iâm genuinely curious. We agreed that we should be friends and I assumed you would be happy for me if I got into a relationship, which Iâm not in one.â
The silence on the other line is deafening. After several moments, Piper says weakly, âI just thought we were close enough that youâd tell me. I thought we were friends.â
Her voice is like poison, but Jasonâs drank poison before. He can swallow this, too. âWe are friends, but you canât keep stringing me along.â
âStringing you along?â Piper repeats. âWhat are you talking about?â
âGods, Pipes.â Jason runs a hand through his hair and he can feel his throat burning as he takes every punch of hers, like always. âYes, weâre friends because you decided to be. We have sex when you decide to. I canât keep waiting around for you. I need to try and find my own happiness.â
The hurt is clear in Piperâs voice when she asks, âWhat exactly are you insinuating, Jason?â
He decides to swallow the poison. âIâm only important when you need something from me.â
Jason only feels the burn when he hears a quiet click and the line goes dead.
