Genevieve Nott // 23 // Political Journalist "Speak and open up your mind It's something you should do all the time Keep exploring, seek and find You know you might surprise yourself Talk without the taint to hold The doubts that should embrace your heart The calm and chaos of your soul You know you might surprise yourself" *dependent rp account*
the next two words that spilled out of the womanâs mouth startled adrianâand admittedly, irritated him. granted, he had been the first one to yap out a vulgar exclamation, but he hadnât directed it towards anybody, in particular. unlike her. adrianâs brows furrowed, taking a step back but still keeping his stance. âway to be rude to someone whoâs literally just apologised,â he replied sharply, eyeing her pointedly. âtry learning some manners, yeah?â
âDonât try and turn this around on me. It wonât work. Youâre the one in the wrong here. Why should I be nice to you? It was you that did something that required an apology.â While her wand was no longer pointed at him, she hadnât put it away. She knew better safe when out alone. As far as she was concerned her response was completely justified. It wouldnât be her fault that he didnât understand why. âYouâre one of those guys that tells girls to try smiling, arenât you?â

â Oh sinnerman where you gonna run to? Oh sinnerman where you gonna run to? â The fast-moving rhythm of the old jazz song echoed throughout the room as Orion sang along with it at the top of his lungs, dancing with his eyes closed and his lip curled up in a wide smile. He wouldnât stop dancing and singing until he could hear footsteps approach him. â Are you just going to stand there and watch me or will you join me? â He questioned them as he ran his fingers through his hair to keep it from falling down his forehead.Â
âI prefer to let you act a fool all by yourself,â Genevieve replied. There was no telling if she was teasing playfully or rudely when she delivered it without any notable expression or tone. She took a sip of her drink and continued to stare, as if daring him to continue or make a move. Genevieve was just stubborn enough to commit to it and ignore the music that would normally pull her attention. âIf that wasnât clear, Iâll watch.â
normally, adrian would be a bit more alert walking down the streets, especially during late nights like this one. however, heâs more than exhausted this day, eyelids heavy and body weary after a particularly gruelling shift at work, and all he wanted was to head to the bar and have a pint. that is, until he rounds the corner and comes face to face with another figure, making him jump at the sight, fingers automatically reaching for the wand hidden in his backpocket. âmotherfucker!â he  exclaimed, taking  a  brief  moment  to compose himself. âsorryââ he winces, âi didnât mean toâ you just surprised me, is all.â
Genevieve had pulled her own wand just as fast in response. She wasnât nearly as jumpy as him, but she wouldnât let someone point a wand at her and not do the same in return. It was a late night, and while she would normally apparate, she had decided it was too nice out not to walk for a time first. This was spoiling it for her. âFuck you!â It was a reactionary response to his own exclamation. âI surprised you? I was walking in the middle of the sidewalk. Youâre the one that leaped around the corner with your wand drawn. Try paying attention.â Genevieve pressed her lips tightly together and didnât drop her glare or her wand.
eddie rolled his eyes as genevieve walked up. the two were always cordial, but that didnât mean they werenât as competitive as they possibly could be when it came to their jobs. it was just a bit of friendly competition, but of course eddie always wanted to be the better one. âno one has the time to use honey, genevieve,â eddie looked over at her with a small grin. ânot with the deadlines that i have,â he admitted as he stuffed his materials back into his bag before looking back up at the girl. âthe byline?â he repeated, eyebrows furrowed in visible disbelief. âabsolutely not, if itâs my story, youâre going to be lucky if you even get some small credit on the page.â
âIt takes the same amount of time as vinegar. Itâs your loss that you canât manage it.â Genevieve wasnât always the nicest and she often saw no need to sugar coat things. However, that was in her personal life. She wasnât above manipulation for her job. It was the plan for the day. She had scheduled an appointment and was going over her notes. There was no telling if they were chasing the same story, but it wasnât unlikely given they both appeared to want to talk with members of the same department. âI was offering to work together. Iâd never give you any credit for a story Iâm working alone. I suppose weâll just have to see come Monday when Iâve managed to get the interview and youâre left with unsubstantiated claims for your story.â
âYou didnât happen to see a um⌠a flying teddy bear, at any point go over here, did you?â Merlin Thaddeus really did love his job sometimes. Heâd spent the better part of the day deanimating a hoard of stuffed animals from a nearby toy store and he had finished about forty-five minutes ago, but he needed to just double check he didnât need to send an obliviator down this way as well before he headed home. âOr you know, a whole flock of them?â
Genevieve raised an eyebrow at the odd question. Flying teddy bears didnât seem like something one would easily lose. âI wouldnât be standing here like it was a normal day if Iâd seen such a thing.â She would be filming it and then getting to the bottom of how they came to exist and roam free. It seemed the only appropriate response for her. âDo you often lose track of such things?â

âfine, sit in there and say no comment, but donât be surprised when thereâs an article tomorrow morning bashing your god-awful, pompous, idiotic boss,â he was practically yelling as he was all but dragged out of the office by some bodyguard who most definitely had some type of giant in his family. he still was clenching the notepad in his fist, rounded glasses dangerously close to falling off before the door was slammed in his face. he huffed, fixing his sweater and pushing his glasses back up on the bridge of his nose. âpeople certainly just donât have manners like they used to,â eddie grumbled as he put the notepad back into his bag, still visibly irritated at the situation.Â
âAre you talking about yourself, Eddie,â Genevieve teased, a playful smile pulling up the corners of her lips. Even if she wasnât there with him, it would have been impossible for her to miss the scene. She found it more amusing than she presumed he did. While she was never shy of sharing her opinion she was aware of it not always being the best idea during work. However, that applied much more to the people she interviewed than coworkers. It wasnât her job to be liked. âHasnât anyone ever told you that you catch more flies with honey than vinegar?â Every sign pointed to her not liking Eddie, especially him holding a position higher than her own. The opposite was actually true even if she would never feed his ego with the truth. She saw it as obvious friendly teasing - not that she cared if it wasnât taken that way. âWe should play good cop, bad cop. I think Iâll win. Iâll even let you share the byline.â

BIOGRAPHY
Genevieve was born on the Nott family estate and lived there until she was five. She has vague memories of the expansive gardens and long hallways that opened into large rooms. She remembers the pretty dresses her mother made her wear and the smiles her spinning around in them brought to the face of her usually reserved father. Her first signs of magic were also in the estate. A rather bad temper tantrum at dinner sent her plate of food flying across the room. It was also the birthplace of her younger brother. She wasnât fond of the strange new wrinkly addition to the family at first, but soon grew to love him.
The bubble of her life couldnât last forever. Her father still had the remnants of war stuck to him. The once respected Nott family was cast into the muck of society. She was mostly shielded from the influence of her grandfatherâs actions, but it was only getting harder as she got older. The looks she never noticed as an infant, upset her as a toddler and young child who didnât understand. People said such mean things about her father, the man she only knew for loving her and her mother and brother. It reached the point where she didnât want to leave the house. She didnât like strangers. Her parents could no longer let her be affected. They packed up their belongings and moved to the United States, her motherâs home, for a fresh start.
New York became her home. Genevieve thrived in the bustling city. She learned independence and the need to be assertive. She also learned the need for secrecy. The wizarding community was far more integrated with the muggle population, or no-maj population as she soon learned was the American term. All it took was another child laughing at her once over the term muggle for her to adopt it. The integration fueled her views of love and tolerance. Her father had kept his opinions neutral, allowing Genevieve to draw her own conclusions. Her friends were often a mix of both no-maj and wixen. It still took her family by surprise when her first boyfriend was a no-maj even if it only lasted a summer.
School was a mixed basket for Genevieve. She loved Ilvermorny, and the freedom to use magic, and learning everything she could. She didnât like being away from her family, and the city, and her no-maj friends. It was a delicate and bittersweet balance. She excelled in academics, but struggled making friends. People often found her intimidating, and she never fully understood that. She had no problem speaking her mind, and was fiercely stubborn. It didnât help that she had a knack for dueling magic. She had a few close friends, and learned to not care about being popular. School was also the time for experimenting, and she was known to go through boyfriends and girlfriends, refusing to settle with anyone for more than a couple of months at a time.
Genevieve discovered a love of politics when she was thirteen. She picked up interest in the world around her and it bled into an interest in the powers that governed it. She wanted to know all about the laws and lawmakers that dictated her life. It led her to activism, pushing to make a difference for the greater good, and inspired her to write. It wasnât long before she turned the writing into a self-published blog and freelance journalism. She lived on her own after graduating and supported herself through her writing.
It was on a whim that she applied for the open position at The Daily Prophet. She had only been to England for a few holidays since the move when she five. Still, she had kept herself informed on English wizarding politics, and occasionally wrote about it. She was surprised when they asked her for an interview, and hired her on the spot. They had gained quite the reputation during the war, and her fresh, and progressive perspective was wanted to help the paper stay with the times.
The Nott estate once more became filled with life. She had originally wanted to rent a flat in the city, but her parents insisted she stay at the family home. It would be easy enough to apparate, or floo into the city. They saw no sense in her spending her money on a flat when she already had a home. Genevieve drew the line at them sending a house elf with her. She was perfectly capable of doing her own cleaning and cooking. The live-in caretaker that moved into the estate upon their departure could stay to continue with the upkeep of the grounds and estate. She wouldnât be using the whole house after all. One wing was more than enough for the twenty-one year old.
She had to prove herself. Years of experience in the United States meant nothing to her advisor. He gave her puff pieces for months, much to her annoyance, before she convinced him that she could handle larger stories. She fought tooth and nail to be a correspondent at the Ministry, and to be allowed to do more research heavy pieces. It took a couple years, but she established herself. She earned a reputation for being direct in her questioning, and pulling no punches in her writing. She was thorough in her research, making her trustworthy. She also had the ability to explain even the most complex of issues in a way that anyone could understand. She was formidable, and she knew it. Nothing would hold her back.
FACTS
She is obsessed with coffee. Her day does not truly begin until she has had a cup of coffee. She usually has several throughout the day. She takes her coffee black. Despite her love of coffee, she does not like coffee flavored things.
Her accent is a mix. She spent the first five years picking up a British accent, but her time in the States got rid of most of it. Still, her father was a huge influence on her. She kept some of the accent because of hearing how he spoke, and she picked up plenty of his terms. Her accent was mostly American when she moved back five years ago, but it has been becoming more British over the years.
Genevieve loves to paint. She has a room dedicated to painting, filled with supplies and used to store all her paintings. She does often paint outside as well. It is her favorite hobby besides creative writing and reading
