30-pin to Lightning Adapter
So we currently have a Lightning to 30-pin adapter for all those cords that we have from our older Apple stuff... How long do you reckon it will be before we see the converse (as shown above)? Will Lightning be the last physical connection for Apple products or can they go smaller?
I'm surprised they didn't cease with selling 30-pin cables and just sell this as an accessory with the new Lightning cables.
You Just Have To Do Something
Throughout life we are impacted with moments that are rich with meaning and significance. Regardless of the joy or sorrow that these moments create, it is our job to listen and respond. This summer I was given the gift of one of those profound moments.
On a warm August afternoon, my wife and I invited some close friends over for lunch to spend the day swimming in our pool. We were in the water playing with our kids, watching them one-up each other jumping in, and playing all the usual games.
One of the times my daughter climbed out to jump back in, she cried out in pain after stepping on a bee. As soon as I pulled out the stinger left behind in her foot, one by one more bees began to swarm. Thinking that the dead bee was attracting others, I picked it up and went inside to throw it away.
The moment I opened the trash in the kitchen I heard my wife scream outside. It wasnāt an ordinary scream. I look outside right at the moment she was diving into the water. Racing outside I was certain that she was being attacked by the aggressive bees.
I made it to the edge of the water right when she was coming up. My heart sank. In her arms was our little boy, blue and lifeless.

āWords that lean on the mind are no good,ā according to Baxter. āThey must dent it.ā Simplify, simplify, simplify. āA wall goes up,ā Whitaker warned, āwhen you try to make Mr. and Mrs. Average American Citizen work or think.ā

Why do we industrialize the hiring process, spend very little time on scouting, and seek out the replicatable instead of the special exception? Our ego demands that we spend all day polishing the average instead of seeking out the exceptional.

Pretty sure those things run Android.
A company that grows at 1% a week will grow 1.7x a year, whereas a company that grows at 5% a week will grow 12.6x. A company making $1000 a month (a typical number early in YC) and growing at 1% a week will 4 years later be making $7900 a month, which is less than a good programmer makes in salary in Silicon Valley. A startup that grows at 5% a week will in 4 years be making $25 million a month.

Like many of Appleās inventions, the iPhone began not with a vision, but with a problem.

Thunderbolts and Lightning
Best line from yesterday's iPhone keynote goes to Phil Schiller: "Now we have Thunderbolt and Lightning". Now I'm not a Queen fan, but I love the names.
Without
Since 2003, Iāve not left my home for work without also leaving with a laptop computer. My office has been in my bag, with everything I needed at my fingertips, every day for the last ten years. Itās hard to describe the security of knowing you have it all with you (as well as a back up drive or two) wherever you go.
Today, Iāve left the house with only (only!) my iPad and iPhone.
Itās a bit of an experiment and one that actually scares me a little. Iāve done it for a couple of reasons:
Can I create on an iPad? I really want to answer this question. Yes, I know people do covers for the New Yorker on iGadgets (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/newsdesk/2011/06/cover-story-he-draw-on-ipad.html#slide_ss_0=1). I know you can make documents and wireframes and store everything in the cloud. But can I do it⦠and how effective is it day to day ā¦thatās the question. I need to see if I can make a workflow work.
Less daily necessity for a ācomputerā More and more I find my work is in the connective tissue of a project rather than the singular tasks: the āsitting over there and making stuffā sort of tasks. Itās in driving vision and building consensus. Itās in more and more meetings to influence and create the best experience. And I find myself creating new ways to have the most impact while doing less (but better and more influential) documentation on my laptop.
But letās face it - an iPad is a computer. It just feels like leaving the Swiss Army knife at home and only taking the hunting knife. Which leads me toā¦
Laptop as safety blanket Probably the main reason I need to do this. My laptop has been a ten year habit. Iām honestly surprised by the level of anxiety I have leaving it at home today.
I have every app I need (Email, Safari, Omnigraffle and OmniOutliner, the iWork suite, iPhoto for processing images, I even have Diet Coda if I need to write some HTML for heavenās sake!) and multiple cloud storage options on my iPad but thereās something in the back of my mind nagging me. Like Iāve forgotten to turn off the (proverbial) stoveā¦
Regardless, Iām skating on my own today. Letās see if I can keep my feet without my old friend.
Less
The proliferation of all things digital has brought with it an expectation of 'how things should be':
Websites should have a site map;Ā
Apps should do one thing really well;
Your competitor has a community section, so you've got one;
Show the people how social you are by putting a link to your Facebook page in the footer;Ā
And you absolutely need an FAQ page (and don't forget to name it "FAQ").
Doing these things will be the safe and lazy move. We feel it's how it should be and yet it's so unsatisfying - so muchĀ structurizing.
How about stripping it all away and doing only what's essential. Question everything until it can get no simpler. That's a scary task and you'll need to learn to win friends and influence people because different is bad. Too often we'd prefer to go unnoticed than to do something really great. It's also hard, hard work.
People say "less is more". I've grown to dislike the phrase. If you truly do Less correctly, it's not more. It'sĀ better.
I don't know about you, but I'm ready for less.

UX Word of the day: Structurize
Struc-tur-ize (verb)
Definition:Ā To slavishly follow a design convention without providing any of the benefits the convention intended to provide.Ā
Elevation Dock Day. Entirely forgot I'd ordered it. Looking forward to seeing how a new iPhone will work in it... Nice work, ElevationLabs!
