Allowing myself one discourse post because i saw something that reminded me of it. A lot of my opinions on broader discourse wrt depiction in media is that darker themes and traumatic experiences absolutely always deserve their place in fiction/media and in fact Need to be talked about and not left as a complete taboo. It is genuinely imperative. However the objectification of said subjects is something i will never stand for and i think one of the greatest mistakes people have been making in these discourses online is letting people conflate both purposefully in order to muddy arguments.
And I feel the same way about the fact that everyone just took the term "pro-ship" as it is, like, let's think for a second about how language influences thought. pro-ship is not a neutral term, it puts itself in a position of victimhood, because look shipping is just this cute thing fandoms do so being pro-ship means youre pro shipping! So hating them means you hate harmless shipping! When it actually has nothing to do with that, and people not only let them run with it but also played into it directly by labelling themselves "antis". Which is part of why i have never called myself that and will never directly say "proshippers" but rather "people who call themselves proship" because to me that language is not coincidental and is a planned ploy to make themselves seem more palatable and agreeable and non threatening. Like it just is playing into their game, they conflate their specific objectification with shipping as a whole, the same way they will conflate objectification and global general depiction of said topics. It's not a coincidence because it works and people fall hard for that. I would argue theres even a lot of people calling themselves proship that dont even know what theyre defending and sincerely believe it is only about depiction in media in general.
And I mean the way i would say it is I do not associate myself with a discourse side because i despise the way every argument online is made into a dichotomy where if you agree with one then you agree with everything everyone has ever said in that circle. It's completely meaningless and useless as argumentation. I would rather we keep being critical of our thoughts rather than label ourselves something and act like the work is all done. Which to be fair is a big issue in leftist circles as a whole. You cant just label yourself antifa and all of a sudden youre morally and politically perfected. And on a personal level like yeah i think a LOT (a majority) of people who label themselves "antis" and play into the discourse game are annoying as fuck however the majority of those are also teenagers and I would accept annoying teenagers far more than even coming close to both annoying and politically dangerous adults that spend their time trying to force teens' boundaries constantly and then pretend that kink has no political context ever at all.
