This is SV Tenacious, the only tall ship in the world designed and built to be sailed by a truly mixed ability crew, including including disabled people, those with mental health conditions or long-term ill-health issues. She has features such as wheelchair lifts and wide decks that provide equal and easy access throughout the ship, a speaking compass that enables those with visual impairments to steer the ship and signage in braille, guidance tracks, tactile stair strips and raised directional arrows on handrails for people with visual impairments.
I’ve sailed on her several times, and seen wheelchair users go up the mast and visually impaired people steer her into harbour, and the impact on people’s self-confidence that being a full part of the crew, able to take part in every aspect of sailing a ship, has on people.
All her voyages had to be cancelled over the pandemic, and now the charity that runs her, the Jubilee Sailing Trust, are facing administration if they can’t raise a certain amount by Thursday 14th. If they do, it will be a huge loss for a lot of people.
I realise this is a difficult time, financially, for lots of people, but if you can spare anything to help keep them going, please do, or even just share this post in case others can help. This charity means a lot to me and my family.
You can donate here.
They’re currently ringfencing donations made so if they do go into administration, anything you donate will be refunded.
the way that black sails handles silvers leg loss is so interesting. i tried to say this before less articulately in the tags of another post but... in a lot of shows, silver losing his leg would happen in the final confrontation with flint. it would be the thing to turn him into the (arguable) villain of long john silver. and we see other media lean into this conflation of disability and villainy. not only are many villains disabled, but often the disabling incident is the turning point of their descent into villainy.
but for silver the amputation arises from one of the few selfless things he does. it's not a punishment for his moral failures but a consequence of his new bond with the crew and burgeoning sense of morality
and then we get two more seasons to watch him cope!!! we see him worry about his physical limitations - which prove to be present but often scant, as he becomes a better fighter while disabled than he was before - but more importantly worry about his image and perception. i see silver as someone who is deeply afraid of marginalization and complete alienation from society. he wants to preserve his ability to disappear into the crowd, when it suits him. his becoming disabled limits this ability for him and and i think fear of further marginalization is a big factor in eroding his relationships with madi and with flint
A wet first weekend of September 2023, in rainy Manila, thanks to Typhoon #HannaPH (Haikui) while still drawing moisture from Typhoon Saola (headed for Hainan). Screenshot of Zoom Earth app.
No sign of occupancy and a motor yacht where the seaplane used to dock. Did the Air Juan Seaplane company survive Covid lockdown?

A runner cap shape is good for Filipinos and those with smaller heads (lower volume). Trucker caps are taller but not suitable for sailing use.
Orange or neon orange is the best high visibility color after yellow. Hi-viz caps on sailors make heads visible during capsize drills. So participants can quickly see nobody trapped / unconscious /face down breathing water under turtled hull. Safety important.
It's easy to put a flag cloth patch to cover the small logo on a cap. Organizers sometimes require competitor brand logos on clothing, to remain covered during the duration of a regatta.
