Please note  I have found it difficult to lodge intended posts today..... problems encountered: site only offered

then, recommended blogs which cannot be removed and

spotlight with its flashing adverts which are distracting when working, and AGAIN do not seem to be able to be removed.

I would have included key posts from storytelling research,

issues and how they were addressed in internship and

other reflections.

However. ... with changes to tumblr I do not know how private this is. Also There is advertising on site and  the features have changed.  

I will instead investigate another blog site.... as I was hoping to keep information for future referral.

Meanwhile if further information on process etc is required by TAFE for this last period other than discussions at TAFE I am preferred to do an email summary of links etc. .

..As I posted 144  posts during the year this should be sufficient.... including both sites of interest also periodic review and insights.

My goal remains work in sector..... insufficient opportunities however to attain networking opportunities....

Review of involvements during CCD course:

1. involvement with FLAG: since  May 2013 I have attended

monthly meetings,

participated in a working group,

two networking forums,

assisted with a survey of housing tenants.

this has given me opportunity to develop local community connections, be an onlooker on community development processes, meeting processes and problems, and initiation of new projects to address issues or lack of response and has been invaluable to look at personality and meeting styles and managing agendas.

2 continuing involvement with an arts training trust

set up of a blog to promote trust

consolidation of structure and increased transparency in process

consolidate annual tasks and devolve tasks to other trustees

introducing change... what do we want in a new trustee.

3.   internship with Hunters Hill (volunteer) 4 weeks

At the time of the 2011 Census, 36.1 per cent of the state’s population (2.61 million people) resided in regional NSW.

Regional NSW is serviced by a network of cultural facilities including regional galleries, regional conservatoriums, writers centres, performing arts centres and museums. These venues offer a mix of locally produced and touring arts activity. To complement this infrastructure Arts NSW supports 14 Regional Arts Boards that employ Regional Arts Development Officers (RADOs) to promote arts development across the State. Regional Arts NSW is the peak advocacy and support organisation for arts in the regions.

As part of our commitment to ensure the state-wide delivery of arts and creative industries programs and services, Arts NSW supports arts in the regions in a number of ways. In 2011-12 the Arts Funding Program provided over $6.8 million for local governments, community and cultural organisations in Regional NSW to support 167 programs/projects. This complements the role of local government which collectively is the largest investor in cultural programs and facilities in the state.

“The 2012 Local Government Arts & Culture Awards were hotly contested with 116 entries across 23 categories and five themes, which focused on arts and culture leadership, development, participation, facilities and interdisciplinary projects,” said Cr Rhoades.

“The successful councils are as diverse as their award-winning initiatives, showing that it doesn’t matter if you come from the country or the city, the coast or inland; culture and art are important to all communities,” he said.

“In fact, many of the arts and cultural projects recognised today are about connection – connection to community, connection to creativity, connection to Aboriginal heritage, connection to cultural heritage.”

President of the Shires Association of NSW, Cr Ray Donald, said if culture is defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts, then ‘local’ cultural activities and projects give our communities a strong sense of identity and help to build cohesion.

“With the growing prominence and celebration of art and culture in society, councils are realising the benefits of engaging their communities through art and culture initiatives – be it installing public artworks, holding culturally specific events or supporting ‘pop up’ art spaces.

“To encourage and recognise smaller rural and regional councils involved in the arts and culture sector, an award for each of the five themes were presented to a number of councils with populations of 20,000 or less,” said Cr Donald.

The culturemap community

culturemap is an online social network for people interested in sharing ideas about cultural planning and research and creative enterprise development.

Members can interact with colleagues from Australia and internationally by blogging, participating in interest groups and webinars, posting news or events, hosting private meetings in online workrooms and searching for expertise amongst other members.

Role of a RADO

RADO position descriptions vary from region to region and are developed to reflect the arts and cultural infrastructure, geographic location, demographics and available resources of each region.  In some regions where there is little arts and cultural infrastructure, or few groups engaged in arts and cultural development, the RADO undertakes the planning and development of projects in partnership with existing groups to meet the needs of local communities.  Sometimes this involves facilitating the establishment of local groups.

In other regions where there is well established and mature arts and cultural infrastructure, the RADO works at a regional strategic and planning level to assist groups to work together and access additional resources, thereby strengthening the network of arts and cultural activities that already exist.

Additionally, RADOs access regional, state and federal resources for local arts and cultural groups that may not have the knowledge or skills to do this.  Increasingly these resources are sought through government agencies that do not have an arts and cultural brief, and RADOs have become adept at engaging them in worthwhile projects that also meet their departmental guidelines and goals.

In order to maintain the regional role of RADOs, however, it is important to remember that they are not local arts workers but function on a regional level, facilitating communication; programming and planning; working with local arts and cultural groups; local government; and cultural workers engaged by other agencies (regional library officers, regional gallery personnel and regional tourism officers).

The role of the RADO is evolving rapidly, becoming more sophisticated and requiring greater professional skills in policy development, planning, management, financial management, resource management, project and program development.  As a result, RADO position descriptions require frequent reassessment to ensure that they are accurate depictions of the roles that RADOs play. To reflect these changes some RADOs use GM or EO in their titles.

RADOs now form a statewide network of professional arts and cultural workers who share skills, knowledge and work practices from all corners of the state.

Increased funding to Regional Arts Development Boards.

The NSW Government through Arts NSW has provided a funding boost to NSW’s 14 regional arts development boards – who will share in more than $1.9 million in funding per year for three years to provide arts and cultural opportunities to over 100 local government areas and more than 1.7 million people.  This is an increase of nearly $500,000 over the three years.

These funds help the 14 regional arts development officers, who lead the board’s programs, to create new opportunities for artists and arts workers and respond to local demand.

As the peak bodies for arts development in their regions, the boards provide vital support for arts and cultural programs and projects that are specifically tailored to meet their local needs. The success of the regional arts board network throughout NSW relies upon partnerships between local communities, local government and the NSW Government through Arts NSW.

The NSW Government has announced a two-year funding package of $460,000 for an arts and community partnership program on the Central Coast of NSW.

The Art Central partnership follows the release of a report by Lois Randall Creative Consulting, Central Coast art + community report 2010. The report was commissioned by Arts NSW, to provide a profile of arts infrastructure and resources in Gosford and Wyong and to identify possible partnership projects in the region.

The Art Central partnership delivers on key findings of the report. It also provides a foundation to explore further partnership projects on the Central Coast with the Commonwealth and local government.

With a population of 320,000, the Central Coast is:

the third largest residential region in NSW and

the ninth largest population centre in Australia.

It is also one of the fastest growing areas in the state, with a further 100,000 residents expected by 2031.

The Central Coast art + community report 2010 (parts 1 and 2) is available for downloading below. Part 1 provides a framework for building the arts capacity of the region and outlines strategies for building partnerships to benefit the Central Coast and its communities.

Part 2 contains detailed information on arts practice and organisations, cultural plans and participation in a wide range of arts and cultural activities.  The report was based on interviews with 40 stakeholders in the region and research on community participation and partnership models.

The last three months have been busy, with four weeks volunteer work with Hunters Hill Council, and seeing example of a way of building cultural awareness with the new sculpture ---- harbour sculpture event.

finalising assignments: e.g. grants,  and assisting at the grants workshop at Penrith, finishing the presentation - sessions: trialling exercises; continuing with participation in FLAG, at Glebe, and the working party looking at conflict and stress in community; attending housing meetings, as observer and looking at meeting structures and participation of 'members' and as an advocate for housing tenants; attending sydney university honours research and listening to and asking questions of research presented. 

At the same time widening focus to find a placement to consolidate learning  through application, with an agency of interest. Now preparing for the research projects and doing some background reading.

In addition, going on outback tour with solo playwriter, producer and actor and individual aim to look at regional arts and see whats happening west of the divide.

Purpose: To provide funding of up to $50 000 for community groups and organisations to deliver projects that

address local community relations issues. The government believes that strong social cohesion is best developed by

projects that bring all Australians together and in particular create connections across the community.

Overview:

There are two aims for the DSCP Funding: Aim 1: to promote respect, fairness and a sense of belonging for

Australians of every race, culture and religion. The aim primarily focuses on promoting inter-community harmony and

understanding. Aim 2: develop the community capacity building skills of specific community groups under significant

pressure due to their cultural, religious or racial diversity. This aim primarily focuses on supporting specific

communities with the purposes of building their social cohesion capacity and/or to promote their positive contributions

to Australia. Project submissions must:

• directly address the program objectives;

• only involve activities taking place entirely within Australia;

• seek funds of between $5000 andup to $50 000; and

• berun for at least one year completed by the end of December.

Funding applicants should demonstrate why the project is important in the particular community and how it could

specifically address the identified issue

Priorities: It is important that project proposals include clear ways to develop and sustain links between people of all

backgrounds, and ways to sustain project outcomes beyond the period of the project. For example 'established' or

'mainstream' organisations that seek to develop and implement projects that are proactively inclusive will be

considered for funding

The Department will identify locations of highest need prior to assessing applications for funding. Funding

recommendations will take into account priority locations as well as the relative severity of issues in particular areas.

Limitations: Funding will not be available for:

• retrospective funding for projects already under way or completed

• subsidy of general ongoing administrative costs such as electricity, phone, and rent of an organisation

• cultural activities and one-off or annual festivals such as funds for concert performance, instruments,

costumes, and dance performances**

• major capital expenditure, for example towards buildings, gardens, motor vehicles, computers and sound

systems although equipment can be hired for project work Diversity and Social Cohesion Program 2013-14 7

• projects that are the responsibility of other agencies, such as those which address anti-social behaviour,

family issues and crime

• the delivery of settlement services - for example, casework and assistance to access mainstream services***

• projects focused on accessing services - for example, raising cross-cultural awareness amongst service

• English language lessons

• projects that address employer discrimination, as this issue falls under the purview of other Australian

Government agencies

• projects which are primarily focused on curriculum development, academic research or teacher development

• translations and reprinting of existing materials or publication of existing manuscripts

• travel to conferences and short training programs.

• schools

• non-profit foundations

• service clubs
