I knew that john newton (probably most famous for writing "amazing grace") was a slave trader before he became a prominent abolitionist activist, but i had not realised hat he had himself earlier been a slave to a sherbro princess in west africa until he was rescued (and then resumed slave trading himself). And prior to his full enslavement had been an impressed sailor in the royal navy punished for attempted desertion. A bizarrely rounded life history on the issue of enslavement
tiefling for @billylilblini
Twists can hit great, of course, but the thing about watching reading etc serialized stories that are both high quality and extremely predictably telegraphed is it's kind of the media equivalent of hungrily anticipating the cake you're going to have when you get home from work all day and then you finally get it and it's exactly as good as you imagined.
Working with different business cultures all over the globe, my biggest surprise is that while the USA is bad, it's not actually the very absolute worst I've ever worked with.
I can imagine all the guesses, but if you haven't talked with a crap ton of people from dozens of countries, it's not obvious.
The key is business culture is like its own weird separate culture with rules and structures, but most places have a fairly comprehensible set of expectations. So most of the time, it's just remembering perceived differences in expectations. Some places it's polite to be what feels really overly friendly to me. Some places it's polite to be what feels obsequious and formal to me. It's like, whatever. A secondary form of language kinda. It's not even social cues, it's just mechanics of language really. Places with that stuff, those are all fine and wonderful to deal with because there's a framework to communicate and all that.
Part of why the USA shits the bed trying to talk with is because every business person here has like zero framework, it's all lies and bullshit, and everyone wants to be the smartest bestest boy. It's not business culture as much as daycare for toddlers who have millions of dollars and hate human rights. Not the worst though, not by far.
What's key to understand is this is all separate from things like the real people in different places. Business brain people don't have any relevance to real human behavior, it's this whole other structure of make believe which controls everyone's well being. It's important to know because I know how to email a business guy in South Korea using language that will feel appropriate enough after translation, but that's completely irrelevant to the real people living there. It's easy to talk to business guys in China or India or whatever. Germany, Nigeria, Mexico.
UK business guys are pretty bad too. Still not the worst but you have to put a lot of extra work in because business culture in the UK still thinks the Brittish empire exists. The majority of business dudes in the UK see no difference between selling something that has their company name on it, and making it themselves. It's like how all the stuff that says "made in the USA" is 99% made somewhere else, and then one staple is put into it and it's made in the USA, but if you talk to business guys here, they never confuse where things are made, just like... more basic realities like linear time and physics. UK guys go the opposite way, and always say they own everything. But that's all relatively navigable. It's like, okay, you all live in an imaginary world, but I can still get everyone to understand time and logistics and stuff enough to get everyone understanding the same information. I can translate imagination land to reality and back, they get it.
Apparently tumble ate my explanation, but the worst business guys are Australians.
I cannot stress how much effort I put into explaining things in ways that work for people who aren't native English speakers, because I understand how weird translation can get, and I am not good at other languages. I have so many special little quirks and tricks to make what I say become something moderately clear and apropriate in translation. I can rotate through a dozen approaches to a topic to make it click for someone unfamiliar with what I'm explaining. I know it works because it's been time tested.
Australian executives simply take any information they receive, and do not. Did you say something is going to take a month - after signing a contract and collect a fee? The Australian business executive simply accepts that you have said you have begun work and it will be finished in 48 hours. If I told an Australian executive that the earth revolves around the sun, I would expect him to let me know that I had told him a hamster named Ben carries a really bright lamp around space to make the seasons. I have to painstakingly document every single detail of any interaction with Australian business persons, because they simply imagine things that have happened and information they have been told, and ignore whatever has transpired in actuality.
I have actually warned all my friends off buying anything from Australia - not because I think there's anything specifically wrong with the general quality of Australian goods, but because after every conversation with Australian executives going exactly the same (I say one thing, they declare I have said something completely different), I am hard pressed to believe anyone at a corporate level in Australian businesses actually understands laws, regulations, logistics, safety, or just... words. Every interaction I have with an Australian business guy inevitably stuns me into a loss for words through some completely unanticipated recap of an interaction we had or email I sent which is fully disconnected from the text or actual event. I cannot understand how the people of Australia, not particularly better or worse than people anywhere else, become the worst humans I have had the misfortune to encounter the second they enter the world of business. I wouldn't trust a single Australian executive to pour water out of a boot with instructions printed on the heel.

all i’m saying is idk how you can expect me to remain silent about the ways in which hadestown distinguishes orpheus as a Magic Music Boy in a medium where everyone is singing, and furthermore how i can have been expected not to imprint on him like a baby bird,,,,,,,,,,
like i just dk how i’m supposed to live with the fact that he is the only character in “road to hell” who sings upon being introduced!!!!
or how in “come home with me” orpheus not only sings his lines while eurydice’s lines are spoken but his voice is ALSO twined through with these ethereal harmonies, like that’s just what happens when he gets excited?? like don’t you wish an unseen chorus started harmonizing with YOU when you were trying to impress your crush,,,,,,
OR how when he does speak his voice often sounds kind of whispy and thin, like he’s not used to it, or like instead of being nervous about singing in front of other people, the way most people are, he’s more nervous about speaking in front of them??? and even when he is speaking in that little voice of his there’s usually still kind of a musical little uptick to it???
or the innocent pride he takes in his Magical Musical Accomplishments, like he’s a little kid who’s discovered he has a knack for something and not a literal touched-by-the-gods son of a muse who can alter reality with his voice, because this is just how his life is???
“it isn’t finished, yet, but when it’s done, and when i sing it, spring will come again :)”
“i sang a song so beautiful the stones wept, and they let me in :)”
speaking of the stones weeping and letting him in, remember how in “wait for me” the stones sing back to him when he sings That Melody and you get “i hear the walls repeating / the the falling of my feet and / it sounds like drumming / and i am not alone / i hear the rocks and stones / echoing my song” but then in “doubt comes in” NOBODY sings That Melody back to him when he tries it out and it’s just orpheus and his voice and the distant taunting of the fates and you want to lie DOWN on the ground!!!!!!
like just in general the way the world around him responds to his singing is so fascinating to me and it brings me endless joy: there’s the aforementioned part of “wait for me,” and there’s also the part of “wedding song” where he sings That Melody for eurydice and you can hear the world around him opening up, there’s “IF IT’S TRUE” and the “is it true?” part of “chant (reprise)” where he’s basically shaking the denizens of the underworld from an amnesiatic TRANCE like i’m
eurydice has forgotten her own name by the time orpheus finds her but he sings “come home with me?” to her and in a line she is able to sing his name back to him i JUST!!!!!!!!! i will not be SILENCED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“hallelujah” by leonard cohen being played as an easter and christmas song, “zombie” by the cranberries” being played as a halloween song, and “born in the U.S.A.” by bruce springsteen being played as a Fourth of July/generic us patriotism song have got to be a special trifecta of the most no-listening-comprehension musical moments that happen on seasonal playlists every single year
I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome
I think that Murderbot is unintentionally sandbagging itself by slowing down its processing speed with all the media it has downloaded and over time that has trained its circuits to run even faster.
Real
"ummm actually that wouldn't happen because-" playing!!! i am playing!!! come play with me!!! i even set up the sandbox with extra shovels!!! don't smack the barbie out of my hands!!
we are doing improv!! pick up a blorbo and yes and with me!!

I was wondering your opinion on KOSA. personally I'm a little worried and frustrated around montiering of content and media, however you generally know more about Things. Especially i think, things that are this kind of vibe.
Anyways would love to know your thoughts.

I appreciate your faith. <3 KOSA has been on my radar, but I did do a bit of extra research before answering this ask. And to be honest, it's not anything like I originally believed! This got a bit long though, so have it under the cut.
The SCREEN Act failed to pass out of committee today!!
Thousands of you called, good job!! Your voice matters! 🩷 Be happy with me today. This is a huge win!
KOSA and the KIDS Act advance to the Senate, but we can fend them off too. Remember KOSA has a conflicting version in the Senate. There's a lot of contention over these bills. Call your senators!
SCREEN Act failed but is now on delay. Still fight against both. We still have time to take them all down again. Call your senators, email, write a letter, or even physical protests. Anything to stop these bills.
Bad Internet Bills
Stop KOSA
Finally doing Childe's quest and he is such a baffling character. Like I like the fanon version of him, but he is way more complicated and crazy than most fics show. The most interesting part to me was that it felt like a lot of what he showed was what he genuinely felt, but that he was still showing it by way of a mask. Like someone who's already crying putting on a tragedy mask.
I am working under the assumption that this guy either a) is some flavor of neurodivergent, b) think he is/actually is a monster pretending to be human, or c) some combination of the above and I am here for it.
My conclusion: Childe thinks his method of expressing himself through masks rather than instinctually is a sign of how monstrous he is but really it's just because he's an autistic theater kid, which combined with his preference for conscious and deliberate action as a warrior gives a weird demeanor.
a scene must be included PRIOR to sex where the characters READ their birth certificates OUT LOUD so the reader will know they were born on the SAME DATE to avoid any disgusting AGE GAPS

idk I can tell that some tumblrinas are not up on fat politics because I see a lot of people saying stuff like “it’s better to be a little fat than waste your life trying to be thin” or like “it’s chic to have a little belly” like okay but there are fat people who are “a lot fat” and have “a lot of belly” which everyone is weirdly silent on all the time. Like the fattest person on earth still deserves to exist in human society with joy and dignity regardless of how they got to that weight or how many health conditions they have as a result of their personal actions…that should be everyone’s baseline here I’m not really sure what’s complicated about it
