so I’m currently reading daughter of no worlds, haven’t finished yet but I’ve seen a lot of discourse (on TikTok particularly) about the comparison to acotar and how its not nearly as good, and as someone who enjoyed acotar I just gotta say I can’t agree at all, so far at least. The characters are interesting and engaging, and this is probably an unpopular opinion but I have to say for me personally Tisaanah is a marginally more interesting and enjoyable mc then Feyre. As for the complaints about world building and backstories… I’m sorry but I really feel like there is a significant lack or critical thinking skills and patience on booktok like you don’t need an immediate massive lore dump in the first 50 pages have some imagination and give the story some time to play out?? But anyway of course this opinion may change as I go through the series but I’ll just ramble for now lol
ACOTAR can be read by someone who's never picked up a fantasy book in her/his life. That's not a knock on it--lord knows how much it's grown on me after being thoroughly unimpressed by the first book in that series.
The War of Lost Hearts world feels like something spawned from the depths of a combination of Hiromu Arakawa's hell brain and a fantasy RPG.
Yet I'd also argue that compared to what I've seen Carissa write in Crowns of Nyaxia...in terms of first books introducing these worlds, Daughter of No Worlds didn't quite have the same degree of grounding and depth. Not quite the same level of character and internal complexity (not surprising, as this is an older series and she's grown as a writer).
I'd actually lean towards--so far--these being incompatible audiences. Those readers are almost going to have to be looking for two very different things out of their books.
I'm driven as equally nuts as any other fantasy veteran by the folks who've only ever read ACOTAR for fantasy and compare everything they pick up in the genre after the fact to it. But to me, that almost seems like more of a "good book, wrong audience" scenario.
There is a significant lack of critical thinking skills, and a significant lack of media literacy regardless of which series you're talking about. There's entirely too much lack of perspective of individual character motivations towards ACOTAR on its own and too many want to play the role of morality police in a book about fae without the slightest notion of how hilarious that is.
Again, there are plenty of readers who enjoy both and who enjoy a wide variety of fantasy books. I think those are going to be the ones anyway who look at WOLH with a bit more discernment.
Truthfully, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. There are aspects I liked and aspects I didn't. I definitely wanted more depth.
I do think comparing the two is apples to oranges (in terms of the Booktok crowd). I can understand a preference for one character over another overall, but the books, worlds, etc. are just too different.
@sadsabbz Oh, I wasn't disagreeing at all--hope it wasn't taken that way. I was kind of doing the same in thinking aloud.
To be honest, I'm still trying to piece together how I felt about Daughter of No Worlds. Strangely, I'm inclined to believe the remaining to books will be what helps me solidify an opinion of it overall (though I liked it).
It's hard for me to figure out exactly where this one's going. I don't mind that at all, but there's very much the question of what, exactly, I signed up for. 😂
It didn’t don’t worry! And definitely understand that, when I originally posted I was a little over half way through the book, and since finishing it I feel the same way as I’ve yet to read the rest of the series. Definitely adored the serpent of wings and night tho it was so good! Also lil tangent to me I feel like this convo also applies to the comparison of acotar and tog people often make. I read the acotar series before tog, and while I haven’t finished the whole series yet cause it’s huge (just finished book 4) I prefer tog so much and that definitely doesn’t seem to be the popular opinion on booktok. Again probably cause it’s not a straight forward or as easily digestible. Idk I love romantasy but I definitely prefer more high fantasy vibes. (A+ if there’s still a lil romance tho hehe)
Started crown of midnight and man Dorian is pissing off so much 😭 How could she have used you to become the king’s champion when if you literally hadn’t sought her out to be your competitor for the competition she’d still be in a prison camp??? My brother in Christ you told her win or die and so she won and now you’re like “she used me to win.” Be so fucking for real rn
i missed the tulin icon wave on the switch so i’m drawing him a lot to cope
Sometimes I just think of how Link disobeyed his ‘duty’ as Zelda’s knight twice and then he turned his back on his prophesied duty as the Hero.
He first stopped “watch duty” at the Spring of Power, after listening to Zelda berate herself and question what is wrong with her.
And then as the Calamity struck, he assessed the situation at the castle and decided to flee with Zelda instead of facing Ganon. It is likely that Castle Town was overridden at that point, so Link had the choice of bringing Zelda through that and getting to the castle, or turning right back around and fleeing into the woods.
As we know, they fled right into the woods, where Link ‘fails’ as Zelda’s knight. She trips and falls. Rather than getting her back up, Link slows, puts away his sword, listens to her, and then comforts her.
Before the Calamity, Link was a dedicated knight of Hyrule, but ultimately… he was devoted to Zelda. And from the Japanese logs, we know his main motivation after remembering their time together is to help bear the burden and see her smile once again.
Link is a Hero through and through, that much is true— but he will always prioritize Zelda.
In Totk, Link TOSSES the Master Sword away in the beginning. Why? To reach for Zelda.
“Oh, but it was destroyed of course he wouldn’t care.” A sword that MAGICALLY heals itself and is the only thing to seal the darkness away… cmon now
And then… Finding Princess Zelda. The quest that Totk is centered around. Because ultimately, defeating Ganondorf and saving Hyrule is just another thing on a to-do list. But finding Zelda and bringing her HOME… that’s his true motivation.
