The Sacred Rage Podcast with Susannah Clarke
Secrets make families sick and trauma gets passed down generationally. My family does not want me to talk about this. But if we don't talk openly about our shame, then nothing is every going to change. “A woman becomes a responsible parent when she stops being an obedient daughter." - Glennon Doyle
Sacred rage is the divine, purposeful anger that arises in the face of oppression, violation, and injustice. It is not reactive rage, meant to hurt or humiliate. It is anger that comes from clarity, from alignment with truth. It is the voice of the inner warrior, the ancestral protector, the soul crying, “No more.”

Daily Journal
My first Daily Journal post is live on my paid Substack. Just $8 a month. I'll be posting daily (as my health allows). If you think you could support my writing in this way, I'd deeply appreciate it! It will help me rebuild financially as I continue to search for solutions to my chronic health challenges. Love to you all!
Women who carry water for the Patriarchy are the first to drown. She doesn't know it, but my mother drowned a long time ago. And... admittedly... I was well on my way. But unlike her, I looked at my teenaged daughter and said, "It stops with me."
It is the most important decision I've ever made.

I suspect my father stalked his victim first. For how long, I don't know. But I do not believe she was a random selection.

My father outsourced accountability. He blamed women and girls for his predatory behavior.

There's no population I want to help more than I want to help Mormon women.

Coercive control is a form of abuse where the main goal is to degrade, isolate, and deprive a person of their rights to physical security, dignity, and respect, which puts the victim in a state of terror and entrapment, and includes tactics such as monitoring movements, social isolation, and restriction of access to financial resources, employment, education, or medical care.
Mormonism can make women vulnerable to coercive control through strict patriarchal structures, institutionalized gender roles, and theology that emphasizes wifely submission and divine obedience. These frameworks can be manipulated by abusers to isolate, control, and silence women.Â
Key doctrines and cultural practices that contribute to this susceptibility include:
Male ecclesiastical Authority:Â
The church’s hierarchy is entirely male. Women are required to report abuse or marital issues to local male leaders (bishops or stake presidents), who may lack professional training and historically prioritized institutional protection and family preservation over the safety of women and children.
The Doctrine of Submission:
Teachings that husbands hold the “Priesthood” and act as the spiritual leaders of the home can blur the lines between spiritual guidance and domination. This can lead to the belief that women must defer to their husbands’ decisions and endure mistreatment.
Eternal Marriage and Family:
In Mormon theology, eternal salvation is tied to temple marriage. The intense pressure to maintain the “eternal family unit” can create a powerful deterrent for women attempting to leave abusive relationships.Â
Spiritual Obedience as Leverage:
The requirement to be “worthy” to enter the temple means women’s standing with God and their families can be compromised if they question or disobey their husbands, making them dependent on their abusers for spiritual validation.

We were running from the law. ...at least our dad was on that day in December 1981 when my brother remembers experiencing snow for the very first time. But we didn't know that, and wouldn't learn the truth for another 40 years. It would be that memory- that seemingly innocent memory of snow that would open pandora's box and change our family forever.
