Oakley watched the tributes and sighed. Â âIâm sorry I scared them off,â she apologized sincerely. Â Skittish and scared tributes were something she had a lot of experience with. Â Outside of Nadya, it had been a long time since District Eight had a tribute make it past the bloodbath.
She shrugged one shoulder. Â âFigured it was. Â I donât think Iâd be here if I couldnât have been faster than a career.â Â Absentmindedly her finger brushed along the scar on her forearm from the District One boyâs sword. Â âI didnât mean to interrupt your training.â
âItâs fine.â Sheâd been dealing with her tributeâs disappearing act since theyâd been on the train. At this point she was beginning to think it might be good to stop advising all together. Maybe it would be enough just to give them some comfort in their last days.Â
âSmarter too,â she added. âI remember your games. That career was about as cocky as they come.â That had been a decade ago during the hardest period of her life, but she remembered seeing the tribute on the screen. She remembered Birch doing most of the leg work when her victory tour came round. âThis crop Iâm not so sure of though.â
