- In terms of personality, I imagine him as someone with undiagnosed ASPD (no MRIs yet). He consistently displays low levels of empathy and high impulsivity, particularly in his medical practice, traits that eventually cost him his medical license. Although he is unaware of his exact diagnosis, he is self-aware enough to recognize that he is fundamentally different from most people. He simply doesn't care.
- Valve has already confirmed that he isn't a Nazi, but I do think he would have capitalized on the opportunities presented during the war. I imagine he took every chance to conduct experiments on whoever happened to be available at the time, completely devoid of moral reservations. He's an extremely amoral individual. Technically, he never became a Nazi because he was still a medical student during that period. After the war, he was expelled from the medical community and fled to the Americas, where he later lost his medical license after impulsively extracting an entire patient's skeleton.
- Despite how much of a madman he is, he still operates within a social baseline shaped by the cultural etiquette ingrained in him since childhood. He's a polite German man who maintains a subtly patriarchal standard of treating women gently, values punctuality, attempts to appear approachable and cultivate a warm atmosphere (while consistently failing), and is genuinely kind to animals. If there is one inherently admirable trait he possesses, it's his academic integrity. He absolutely loathes having his own work diminished and equally despises seeing the work of others unfairly discredited. The primary reason he joined Mann Co. in the first place was to secure funding for his research and publish his findings under the company's name.
- He is thoroughly apathetic toward humanity as a whole, with the exception of his teammates (and whatever family he may still have). It's not that he cares about them in the conventional sense; rather, they've become integrated into his routine and directly improve both his quality of life and the quality of his work. He approaches nearly every relationship through a mental list of pros and cons, making most of his connections fundamentally transactional. Genuine reciprocity is rare for him.
- I imagine he was raised by emotionally distant, academically driven parents, with pets serving as his primary source of companionship throughout childhood, something that explains his lasting affection toward animals. He wasn't a violent child, but he frequently asked questions that most people found deeply uncomfortable or inappropriate. Despite this, he still grew up in what could otherwise be considered a relatively normal household.
- He chose to become a physician rather than a scientist because he believed it was the more practical career path (doctors are paid more...totally not me projecting). It's one of his biggest regrets in life, as he greatly prefers the solitary, methodical nature of research over interacting with patients.
- Nonetheless, he eventually adapted to the situation and grew more comfortable once he secured stable employment at Mann Co. Over time, he genuinely came to enjoy working in the field, which is why I see his sadistic tendencies as something that developed over the years rather than being entirely innate.
- His relationships with the other mercenaries vary, and I'll probably expand on them in another post. In general, he respects the Engineer for his intelligence and ingenuity. He also respects—and is particularly close to—the Heavy, both because of his remarkable biology and because he's far more intellectually sharp than people give him credit for. His opinion of the Spy is perpetually clouded by suspicion. His view of the Demoman is deeply hypocritical; he criticizes Demoman's alcoholism, claiming to be above vices and impulsivity, while failing to recognize that he is simply another outlet for those same flaws. He is largely indifferent toward the Scout, though the boy's loudmouth tendencies occasionally irritate him. He considers the Soldier an absolute moron. Pyro, however, is perhaps the only mercenary who genuinely unsettles him, as they're the one person whose behavior he finds impossible to decipher or predict.
- He speaks to Archimedes like he does so in a mirror, he just sees the bird as an extension of himself
- Loathed being called "Herbert" by literally anyone, wants to assert his superiority by forcing people to either call him Doctor or Medic.
- Despised medschool. He passed with flying colors but residency SUCKED with the amount of cases he had to collect (on god I hate this so much)
- Similarly, he's stressed the fuck out if there's more than two people calling out for him. His temples are severely grey by his lack of ability to regulate stress.
Romance, sorta.... (SOFT NSFW WARNING)
- As for his sexuality, I could see him as someone who's actively putting himself out there once or twice a week. Personally, I see him as bisexual with a preference for women. He is capable of romantic attraction and has attempted relationships in the past, but they inevitably fall apart due to his controlling tendencies.
- His preferred partners either feed into his ego—being submissive, compliant, or enabling—or are similar to him in both intellect and madness. Either way, he is not someone who would make for a healthy relationship.
- As for the positives, he's wealthy after becoming a mercenary. He's romantic in a deeply twisted, gory sort of way—he'd probably offer someone his literal heart as a keepsake. Despite everything, he's also fiercely protective of the people he considers his own.
-High libido and unconventionally kinky, would engage in practically most things minus anything that includes third parties. His love language is sexual, physical, and intellectual stimulation. Gifts are hardly charming to him.
-GREAT at sex. He's old and experienced enough, plus he's a doctor so.
-A gentleman at surface level, he would have a reserved 'softer' tone for his partner. Would be very 'doctor like' when they're sick or in need of assistance. Extremely Loyal.
-Still though, it's an unhealthy relationship that's mostly characterized by gaslighting or downright condescension. He would usually have a superiority complex and downplay his partners skills or intellect during an argument.
