It all happened so fast.

As you dropped the shotgun, it clattered to the floor with a bang. With a subsequent thud, the body you just shot hit the floor as well. I cant believe I just did that.

You felt your heartbeat pick up even more now as the man, who didn’t even flinch, turned around with an intrigued, but relatively nonchalant face. You sat on the floor, pitifully. Your face was frozen with a look that resembled both horror and shock. Tears streamed down your face in waves as the utter horror washed over you. The blood spatter on the wall was sickeningly red.

“Well, well, well. I’m impressed.” He said. You tried to think of how you could say you missed and meant to shoot him instead, but he was simply too far away for that to be true. He came closer until he was standing right over you. He kneeled down and could now see that you were trembling all over.

“Why didn’t you shoot me? Do you just have that awful of an aim?” He said trying to crack a small joke (or maybe being dead serious).

“I just- I was…” you paused. You didn’t want to make an excuse. You were tired of being pushed around by others. For once in your life, you decided to stand up for yourself.

“They decided my life wasn’t important to them at all….. I decided I felt the same way.” You said with a chilling change in disposition. He studied you even harder now with a smile slowly creeping onto his face. He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head.

“Oooh, I like you. Cmon, sweetheart. We gotta get you out of here. ” He said with a bit of unhinged excitement. Too weak to stand up on your own, he held onto your arm and waist to pull you up off of the floor. His hand moved up slowly to wipe away some of the tears and blood on your face. You leaned most of your body weight on him as he helped you try to gather some strength. You looked up at him when he stopped walking. He met your eyes and said something that made your heart jump.

“For the record, I had no intention to kill you. I was going to kill those other women, ….but you finished the job for me.” He said seriously, but with a smile on his face. You chuckled weakly. You were confused as he suddenly lowered you onto a chair by the edge of the room. He kneeled down incredibly close to your face and you were able to see his scars in detail for once.

“They won’t suspect that you killed that woman if I leave you here. Blame it on me. Just say that I…knocked you out.” He said sincerely. This man was so full of surprises that he kept you guessing every time he spoke. You loved it. He was such a wildcard and so unpredictable. It was so exciting and new. You couldn’t imagine yourself going back to life the way it was. You couldn’t imagine Gotham going back to the way it was.

You lifted up your hand to trace his scars gently. He looked incredibly taken aback but didn’t move.

“No. I think I belong….with you. I cant go back to how it was before. Take me with you.” You said. He clenched his jaw and looked away while he thought. You watched as his eyes darted and eyebrows furrowed as he explored his options.

“Alright, doll, but don’t say I didn’t warn you…” he said with a menacing laugh. He reached into his jacket pocket to pull out a small handgun. You looked at him with a smirk as he placed it into your cold hands.

“You’ll need this. I know you already know how to shoot it.” You laughed loudly now with a mischievous grin. He took off his huge purple jacket to wrap around you as he walked you to a staircase that led to the outside.

“Wait- I never asked you. What’s your name?” You said. He looked at you and looked away.

“They call me the Joker” he said.

“Joker… hmm. How about I call you J?” You asked him. He looked at you puzzled, but amused. He chuckled and rolled his eyes.

“See, Batman has shown Gotham your true colors, unfortunately.”

You read the time on the wall clock in the empty apartment that belonged to some man named Melvin White. The late commissioner Loeb’s memorial service will start soon. Mayor Garcia is scheduled to speak in precisely 2 hours, on the street right outside this very building. Everything’s falling into place. Joker and his henchmen had successfully kidnapped the Ceremonial police. Stripped the officers of their guns and uniforms in order to infiltrate the ceremony. This is really happening. Joker’s going to assassinate the Mayor.

Your eyes shift to watch J, standing over by the officers- bound and gagged to a sturdy structure inside the residence. Terrified, the men are drenched in sweat, shaking in their restraints. Neither try to mumble or attempt to free the binds in fear of getting themselves killed. Little do they know that’s not on the agenda. Still, their frightened state entertains J. That is obvious.
