A beautiful hot spring pool in Yellowstone National Park has transformed from a crystal blue colour to a bright yellowy-green hue, after years of tourists throwing coins in.

The natural wonder, called Morning Glory, has changed colour because of the accumulation of coins, rubbish and natural debris.

It has been dubbed “Fading Glory” because of the glaring transformation it has undergone since the 1950s.

Almost three million tourists flock to the Wyoming national park each year and many throw coins and rocks into the springs, hoping to accrue good luck.

However, the unintentional vandalism has taken its toll on Morning Glory, clogging up its vents and slowing down the water’s circulation.

As a result the water’s temperature dropped and sent orange-coloured bacteria towards the centre of the pool.

Adam Hoffman, from Science Friday, said: “Pigments produced by swaths of those microbes—called microbial mats—are responsible, at least in part, for the brilliant yellows, greens, and oranges that now tinge Morning Glory and other thermal pools in Yellowstone.”
