I’m almost never serious, and I’m always too serious. Too deep, too shallow. Too sensitive, too cold hearted. I’m like a collection of paradoxes.

“I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but you’re just making this worse.” “I don’t think we have anything left to say to each other.” “Are you happy? Huh? DOES THIS MAKE YOU HAPPY?!” “This isn’t the end. Just the part where I say enough is enough.” “Stop. Just…stop.” “You have a lot of nerve saying ‘Hello’ like nothing happened.” “I’d say ‘give me one good reason to stay’ but I already know the reasons. I just have better reasons to go.” “I’m sorry…we didn’t make it in time. They’re gone.” “You said you’d always be there for me…so how did this happen? Why weren’t you there?” “There will never be anyone else like you…if I’m very lucky.” “What, you thought you deserved better than a voice message?” “What did you do?” “How much have you had?” “That isn’t water in that bottle, is it.” “I can’t stand watching you destroy yourself like this.” “Didn’t it occur to you that you’re hurting me, too?!” “This can’t keep happening.” “The only good part about being alone is that I don’t wake anyone up when I start screaming at night.” “Holy shit–did you do that?!” “How long have you been doing this to yourself?” “I don’t want help. I just want the pain to stop.” “I just can’t stand being alone anymore.” “Please, don’t tell anyone.” “I can’t stand to lose anything else.” “I’m hurting you too much…you should leave.” “Some things just aren’t worth fighting for.” “I don’t even know why you pretend to care anymore.”

He’s about to speak when her order from the counter arrives. Max takes initiative and steps up. Handling the bowl carefully, he reaches for Yuri’s elbow and guides her back to the booth they sat in when they first entered. Setting down the bowl, he passes her chopsticks and sits across from her once more, “Yuri, I definitely can’t say no to shelter, but it’s only fair you know what you’re taking in.
Now, before you think the worst, I’m not wanted by the law and I’d never harm anyone, illegally…” He rubs his hands together nervously. “I certainly would never hurt you either. You see… I don’t eat food because… I’m not…” He says a prayer under his breath that she isn’t upset by the news and quickly decides instead of telling her what he is, he softens the blow by confessing what he isn’t, “I’m not human.”
Clearly pleased with his gesture, she smiled thankfully at the man’s direction. His uneasiness on the other hand was insurpressible. Hell, it was starting to infect her mood like a plague, she thought. The reality of the man’s being was slowly unfolding--and surprisingly it didn’t actually bother her, eventhough her curiosity was definitely heightened in a great deal.
And as he finished his last statement, she momentarily turnt her attention to the window--gazing out of it, trying to process what she’d just heard. Her mind wondered once again if there was actually another existences living on the fringes of humanity--or if she was simply reading too much into things. Forcing herself into composure, she leant forward to address the man at eye level. “Then..., what are you?”
The more the woman looks him over the more Max realizes how familiar she seems and smells to him but he just can’t place from when and where. Stoic, cautious, open-minded, his eyes dance in hers as her fingers linger along his unnaturally cold pale skin. Leaving the table for the counter, Max stays fixed where he stands to observe her order food. “More than one serving? Please—that’s not necessary Yu—Yuri?”
Gradually he remembers that one afternoon months ago when he led her to the castle of his clan to confess to her his secrets. How abruptly it was interrupted, having only a chance to show her around briefly before they were separated. “I… I remember you now. You were kind, as you are now. It’s me, Max~” His visage softens immensely. “You work with a magazine? Editor? Ceo?” Rubbing the back of his neck, he winces while he scrapes to remember the finer details. “I’m so sorry I had to leave you that day. I showed you around the elaborate hotel I was living at, also the home of my family—Well, family-ish.” He admits, pausing only to acknowledge the offer of sanctuary. “Really? You have?”
Max steps forward to pay for her meal, handing the owner running the tea house a few bills. “Thank you, you don’t know how badly I need a shower and something softer than a bench. Or maybe you do.” Remembering the observation of his appearance just a moment ago. “But honestly… Save your generosity. I can’t eat—I don’t eat.” He murmurs. Feeling obligated to be honest before he enters the lady’s home, to give her a chance to genuinely reconsider should the truth make her uncomfortable in anyway.
Infinitely gentler than when he found her sneaking behind him on the street, Max pulls her aside from earshot of the card-playing wife and offers a subtle confession, “Yuri, before you open your doors, I have to tell you that I’m not entirely what I seem.“
“It’s alright, I’m not that hungry myself.” she replied, obviously lying. In fact, she had only managed to call it a day because her stomach couldn’t stop growling which made perfect sense when taking the whole day into account--multiple projects and meeting deadlines, the brunette was probably about to faint into hunger.
At the mention of her name, a soft smile played on her lips. Maybe they weren’t immensely close, but at least he remembered her name. “Damn, I honestly thought you were going to treat me like a stranger for the rest of the evening.” she playfully quipped, her eyes gazing at him. “And thanks. I mean, I am flattered but..kind and ceo aren’t exactly the words to define me.” she joked and decided to look around to detect if her food was already prepared--much to her delight. The girl couldn’t help but smile at the delicious sight but instantly replaced by a frown when the man got up to pay for the food. “Hey, you don’t have to...” she abruptly stopped, internally groaning to herself at the gesture. Truthfully, she felt a little bad for him paying for her food--or rather she hated feeling as if she owed people anything. “I’ll pay you back later.”
She fell silent for a moment, biting her lip in hesitation as he spoke. “No,” she fidgeted, focusing on rolling her hair into a bun for a moment, a few strands escaping from it, dangling down her neck. “..it doesn’t matter. I mean, you must have your own reason too, so,” she murmured lowly to herself. She simply smiled and nodded in response when he accepted his offer although it was partially true--the couch in her living room might be too small for him to lay down, though. Trying to hide a smirk at the thought, she was taken slightly off guard, however by his sudden action. Her curiosity sparked as she pondered over his words before staring at him with a frown. “What do you mean, Max?”
“I’m sorry, I was just trying to be …Nevermind.” Max shifts his eyes to the side, looking longingly through the window to the night sky. The tea house is stuffy and the smell of cigarette smoke coming from the owner’s wife while she plays cards is stifling. Eager to leave, he’s distracted and flinches when touched but doesn’t shy away. He’s used to being close, but not with strangers. The act is very human, maybe even affectionate, so he has to make himself be human for a little longer. “Thank you.” he murmurs to the petite feisty woman.
Eyes following her to the counter while she orders, Max takes her observation with a grain of salt. He can’t deny it’s been an interesting few days and he still hasn’t found a place to stay or wash, so he imagines she’s not far from the truth, “Ne, I’ve been… traveling. I haven’t been able to rest yet. It shows?” Chuckling weakly while he unconsciously combs his fingers through his dark fringe, casually sniffing his own shoulder at the same time to ensure he’s not off putting to be around. “Do you know a inexpensive place around here for travelers?”
Studying his reaction for an instant, she could easily sense it in the air. He looked nervous by the slight affection--something that seemed different from the last time she saw him, she noted. Her mind quickly began to grow curious but the thought quickly dissipated when her stomach growled. With a smile plastered on her face, she walked towards the cashier to finally order her food before returning to her seat, once more.
“I ordered a bigger size. You look like you need more meat in your bones.” she half joked as she tilted her head, referring to the pancake she had just ordered. “Travelling--as in exploring new places, by yourself? Must be a perfect time to unwind, collect one’s thoughts...but not necessarily for self-maintenance.” she mused, her words laced with humor. The girl then noticed how he frantically self inspected himself, eliciting a chuckle from her before he spoke again. Her eyes gazed at him as she recalled the time when he brought her to his mansion, so why didn’t he just return home? As a matter of fact, Yuri wasn’t the type of person to let anyone into her house; the girl would usually find excuses to avoid that from happening. But there was something about his eyes that made her want to help, as if there was somehing plaguing his mind. “Well.., I have some extra space at my place.” she replied, subtly offering but already expecting a half-hearted answer based on his reaction earlier.

Looking over the familiar dark brown wallet in her hand, Max eyes it carefully and touches his back pocket; Empty. “That is my wallet, but why then didn’t you speak up instead of just following close? The city can be a risky place. You made me nervous.” He admits and accepts the found item, opening it to ensure the last bit he had salvaged from his last earnings was still there before thankfully slipping it back into his well broken-in black leather pants.
“I do speak Korean, I would have stopped walking for you.” Sighing from her preferred method of ‘helping’, he thanks her none the less, “Anyways, thank you for returning it to me. I do appreciate it.” He prepares to stand. “I suppose then it was all innocent, so I’ll leave you be Miss … Miss Sarcastic Wallet Helper.” Grins playfully, hoping the silly quip breaks the tension so they can part on good terms.
At his revelation, she snorted humorously whilst looking at the man, a small smirk played upon her lips.“Right...” she simply replied, not fully believing his words. The girl had probably been checking him out too many times to figure out the fact that he could easily take down anyone without breaking a sweat.
As the man continued his speech, she offered a shrug as a response, not really sure what he meant. Does her Korean still sound heavily accented? Why did he even have to thank her if he find her way off putting? Hell, his words were literally driving her mind insane. Shifting her orbs to elsewhere, she figured being too kind at him at was nearly pointless and certainly taking too much of her energy so she decided to focus on caffeinating. However, when the man spoke again, Yuri laughed heartily for the first time, finally standing up to meet his gaze. “Not the nicest thing to say--I’d take that, though.” she sarcastically smiled, nodding nonchalantly. She was about to walk up towards the cashier to order her cup of the day when she found herself reaching out to push a strand of hair behind his ear. “Not trying to be mean...but you look rather shit today.”
