*as Ryker says that, their eyes glow red. The insults physically hurt and 72's magic falters for a few seconds*

72 seems unaffected outside of its own magic flickering for a moment before continuing to swirl around it protectively

*Ryker startles slightly, uncrossing their arms as they debate what's more important, her dignity or pride*

Because like it or not, we're at this academy to be soldiers. And I'll be damned if I see another soldier die because of something I potentially could have prevented if I knew more.

Fine. Did you know standing too close to a corrupted ritual as a youngling can affect you negatively? Hell, if it’s a worse enough ritual you could end up like me. Weak. Overreactive to even simple spells. Certainly not guard material.

*Ryker blinks, clearly trying to make sense of what they've just been told*

...so you're corrupted, and have been since you were young? And that makes you disabled. So what do you mean by overreactive to spells? 'Cause you seemed to walk off my Iron Words spell?

I don’t know how exactly it works, but. Whatever corruption lingers in me seems to delay a spell’s effects. I can push it back longer usually, but that’ll make the eventual blow worse. Not to mention I wasn’t really up for taking hits today…

I’m not really corrupted, so to speak. Just…tainted.

It stands from its chair, swaying slightly and gripping the armrest. A small grey dragon crawls out from underneath, nipping at xeir ankles nervously

Hallway on the right, upstairs. Don’t know why they had to put me up there, considering I get like this so easy but it is what it is.

Leaning against Ryker it begins to walk in that direction, clearly tired but trying to hide it.

*Ryker nods and walks to 72's dorm*

Yeah, well. It’s just another hill to climb, in the end.

Once it reached its door, it opens it, leaning on the doorway as it looks back at Ryker

And with that, it closes its door softly, both itself and its dragon disappearing into its room.

A person is sitting in a dark corner of the secret library.

It may be daytime outside, but because there are no windows in here, this part of the library is shrouded in something like perpetual twilight.

And this student has somehow found a nook so shadowed by bookshelves that their face can barely be made out. They're just sitting on an armchair, unmoving, staring at nothing.

It's quite an eerie sight.

*the sight puts Ryker a little on guard, but the academy has yet to throw anything actually dangerous at them yet so they're less cautious than perhaps they should be as they approach*

Hey there, are you alright?

"Don't come closer."

The figure's tone isn't threatening, just... empty. Warning, maybe.

A bit of light reflects in their eyes - they still aren't looking at Ryker, but at some spot on the far wall.

*Ryker puts their hands up in surrender and stops walking*

I'm not coming any closer. Are you alright?

They stand up, which hides their face even further in the shadows.

"I really thought no one would come here."

Still no emotion in their voice, but it's almost... trembling?

Is.. is it a problem that I'm here?

*Ryker tilts his head*

Do you need help?

"No. No, I don't. I came here to be alone, is all."

They step into the light and ridigly lean against a bookshelf. Ryker can now get a good look at the student in front of them. Cinn is wrapped in their black coat, looking sort of dazed, but otherwise normal.

"... I feel weird."

Define weird. I might be able to help.

They shake their head, somehow hesitant to tell Ryker the full story.

"I... unlocked a new power. And to be honest, I really don't like it. Also, the way I felt when I unlocked it... I almost wasn't myself. And since then, I..."

She trails off, unable to find the right words.

It's been difficult to control? Or like there's a side of you that wants to cast that spell and that scares you?

Cinn gasps, suddenly looking more present than before.

"I- yes. Both, sort of. How did you- I don't think powers are supposed to do that."

*Ryker sits down on the floor*

Maybe it's a psychological thing? Like, part of your mind already works that way, and part of your magic amplifies it?

They feel as if they had been slapped. She knows Ryker is only saying this to be helpful, of course. But still, the way it sounds to her-

"Do you... really think so? I didn't think I was that kind of person. I... I... Do you think the way our magic works, or the way we feel while using it, says something about who we are deep down?"

*Ryker shrugs*

I'm just basing it off my experience. I know I used to be kinda manipulative, and now I have to physically stop myself from calling people I care about certain compliments. But also my shell-shock has been acting up more recently and I think that may be connected? I never claim to be smart, so don't take my word for it.

Cinn barely hears what they're saying. Her head is buzzing.

"So you think... it might be something within me that wants to have control over people. That thinks my will is more important than their freedom. That's an interesting theory."

Their voice has become oddly empty again.

They're disgusted by the thought that this could be true. It goes against everything they've been taught, everything they are. And yet... That cold calmness starts to fill their mind again. Whispering that Ryker needs to shut up.

*Ryker notices the change in tone and changes approach*

I could easily be wrong though; I don't know much about you or your magic. You're probably the genius when it comes to this, I'm just spitballing.

Cinn chuckles.

"Me, a genius? Believe me, I've got nothing figured out. Besides... no need to minimize your own theories."

She crosses her arms, just to stop her fingers from tensing up. Everything is fine. They're having a normal conversation.

"I think it sounds pretty plausible that the way magic works is... more psychological than mystical. I mean, people say that our magic came from somewhere deep inside us, right? That the dragons just helped us unlock that potential."

*Ryker smiles at the more positive tone of the conversation*

Yeah that makes sense. But we've got time to work it out. No rush.

*Ryker wraps their arms around Domnu and hugs them tightly, the movement causing the cat previously in his lap to jump off and walk over to a bird sat on a bookshelf*

*He hugs Ryker hard with a scared whine.*

I'm certain. You're in my room, and nothings on fire- Calliope, think you could extinguish the hearth?

*Calliope bounces and runs up two flights of stairs to try and extinguish the fireplace*

Shell-shock is when you experience something traumatic and it still affects you afterwards. Hallucinations are when you hear or see or I guess smell things that aren't really there.

Um... I don't either, but... It's just that I see and hear people, sometimes, that other people can't... Feel them, too...

No, it was. There was a small civil war back home, and I served on the side of the people, not the royalty. Even got the rank of Colonel. I was tasked with leading an attack on the castle, I came up with a plan and everything, managed to get idiots to do exactly what I wanted them to simply by calling them geniuses, everything was going perfectly.

*Ryker let out shuddering breath*

We- I choked and messed up and forgot one simple factor, and I ended up sending 15 good men to their deaths. And I got away scot free!

*this time, a pained laugh*

There's so much that can't be predicted, or accounted for... It's not you're fault, really.

It is, though. I was tasked with coming up with a foolproof, watertight plan, and I fucked it! Half of them were barely 18! How is that not-
