chapter 4 is the third chapter in a row where the secondary motive is essentially "save the kidnapped girl/woman" - we've had noelle kidnapped by queen in ch2, toriel asleep and imprisoned by tenna in ch3, undyne kidnapped by the knight at the end of ch3, and at this point in ch4, susie unquestionably believes that toriel is in danger again right now. after three chapters which have conditioned you to view "reaching the princess and saving her" as a goal, the great subversion at the end of this chapter is that toriel wasn't even in danger to begin with, and susie is almost disappointed by that fact, because she couldn't swoop in and save her. i find that veeerryy Clues and Interesting. right now we have undyne in the persistent position of damselhood and this narrative undercurrent that she needs to be saved. we have asgore's chapter coming up (guy who thinks he can get the girl if he keeps bothering her enough). chapter 5 is likely to continue to build on some of these themes.... muhaha
